    I really like it. I've never understood the obsession for full wood interior and darker colors. Whiter ones make it look much more spacious and clean:-)

    It was very good decision to choose light coloured wood. It brings so much light inside. I also like the LED lights on the ceiling and the ambient lights under the sofa. Does the toilet stays the same or was changed as well? Would be nice, if you make separate video with boat tour to can see everything.

    I definitely agree that the lighter interior looks great. I guess my one question might be how it will stand up over time to all of the typical kinds of stains and dirt that are somewhat more hidden by the darker traditional interiors or is it that the finishes applied are resistant?

    It's all about compartmentalising. If you can break the jobs down into smaller parts, that makes it a whole lot easier to manage. I think we've said this in one of our videos... maybe this one, I can't remember! Good luck with your own refit though. Where are you planning to do it?

    That is a great summary, and a how to do it refit guide. Thanks. The only thing I would have done is widen the passageway openings. Mine drive me nuts. One inch either side more and I would fit through with out the inevitable hit/squeeze, and there is room to do it but they had their timber moulding formula to stick to. Baa Humbug. I love the end result, so I might try putting up some light colored material over the bulk head teak veneer to see how it looks. My saloon table swings (off center) around the mast support so I can swing it out of the way, but then it is in the passage way. I trimmed it down a bit to make it easier to get past, but finally realized I have to cut it in half to fold over to coffee table size. Then swung through 90 degrees it is almost completely out of the way and the saloon becomes a comfortable lounge, and so spacious as you saw on another boat. I love your lighting, well done. And the other masterpiece is the cockpit cover. I followed that when it was being done and I really couldn’t see it coming out as well as it did. That teak cabin sole is amazing in solid 3/4 inch teak (no squeaks I imaging). One thing I am adding is 3 large provisions draws on heavy duty SS runners under the Saloon seats. I hate lifting cushions to get to food. The chart table is a special problem I’ve yet to fully resolve. That big broad are in the perfect location to …. Park stuff on……and then you can’t open it. I’ve recently done enough reorganizing to have the table completely clear and I fitted one of those spring stays to hold the top up. There has got to be a better system, though.

    Sailing followtheboat you know it is coming to that! The manufacturers are getting smart and realize that you guys know best what works and what not, and most important safety. No one has more experience then you guys! Boat design failures are costly and can kill a company in no time, they finally are picking up on the fact. If I would be in there shoes, I definitely would seek your advice designing a boat. I noticed that Ruby Rose got involved with a catamaran company. I also noticed watching the boat trade show in Germany, how manufacturers welcome you KZreadrs and the interest they show in your experience. I think you should plan on visiting, once that Covid nightmare is subsiding. Watch the episodes from RAN and Distant shores at this trade show. You guys are inspiring and the boat builders know that!😉🤗👍

    outstanding boat you have !!! the number 1 problem with the layout of 85% of all boats is the number of possible people it can sleep , oh i have a 40 foot boat it sleeps 22 people , when in reality 70% of the time only 2 to 3 people ever sleep on the boat , that was how i remodeled my 40 footer , for 2 people , the more freedom space you can give the interior of a boat the more you end up loving it

    Fantastic episode. I can't wait for next week's installment. I am quite jealous of your large open spaces and all the room for storage that you have. We are not by any means beamy here, and with a low centre cockpit our usable space belowdecks starts at the main bulkhead just forward of the cockpit. Under the cockpit is lockers only accessable from the cockpit, The aft cabin has its own separate companionway leading aft from the cockpit and is basically a large bunk with some limited storage and shelves above that. It is our "garage" and is mostly a pile of gear, sails, and folding bicycles.

    We actually have less room on deck than we have in the aft cabin. I often keep our #2, #3, and #4 jibs in bags on the foredeck and ready to hand. They do very well out there and get wet and dry out fine. Our #1 is a huge nylon drifter that rolls up tiny, the size of a small pillow. That we keep in the aft cabin.

    Jamie, using a diode splitter drops the charge voltage about 0,7 - 1V. That leaves you, (depending on the type of battery) with the batteries at most half full after charging. A relay doesn't cause that drop but has a finite life. Have a look at Sterlings A2B alternator charge regulator which gives you full control of the charging voltage. It also speeds up charging to 100%.

  • @followtheboat

    @followtheboat

    The Sterling A2B charger is exactly what we have on Esper, and have had for 12 years or more. This is an old episode so I'm not sure what the diode splitter is you refer to but we got rid of that very early on.

    Fantastic video :-) Some great ideas too. I tend to like an all Wood interior. I collect antiques for that reason. However, I wouldn't be able to take my Solid Oak Dining-room Suite onto a boat or my Cast Iron Stove... O-well... So much for sailing... Hahaha

    your welcome, thank you guys for teaching me so much. Im still on the fence but just retired and there are a lot of reasonably priced monohulls around here for a steal and I have need to make a big change. You two were the first to teach me about the budgets, mono vs cat, cutter vs other sailing configurations, solo sailing and a lot of ins and outs. Just happy there are people like you out there doing stuff like this.

    Fantastic. It's so great seeing other people's real world experiences on boat refit. And I think you're going at a good pace with these videos, showing enough but not too much of the process. Along the lines of "things that went wrong and things that went right", if you're still editing the next video I'd find it helpful to know about things you spent money on but wish you hadn't, and things you didn't spend enough money on and wish you'd had done differently or spent more time/money on.

    I thought the interior was stunning and the electric panel looked very professional. One surprise was that you didn't get the engine out on a 12 month re-fit. Same with Bums on a Boat, they've just done a 12 month re-fit and had horrible engine problems after splashing. Very well done with the bonded customs deal.

    Very nice guys, lots of memories from the first time i watched this refit. One thing, i never found a complete walk through after the refit, I don’t know if i missed it somehow, or you never did one at the time? Any chance (remembering its years later) you could do a walk through? It your own time of course. Kind regards Trev..

  • @followtheboat

    Hey Trev. The only issue I have with a walk-through is the boat is rarely in showroom condition! You've got me thinking though, it could be fun to do a 360° video!

  • @trevhedges

    @trevhedges

    Sailing followtheboat, yeah i did think of that, kinda why i added “of course it’s years later!” And “in your own time” remembering Esper is actually being used to a full time home, it would be near impossible to make her look “show room”. But mainly the layout I’m interested in, ive seen all parts of her, but never as a Continuous tour. But I totally understand if that’s not Feasible at the moment..

    I remember a fellow who enjoyed refering to his massive width; tiring of this I taught him the word girth and its corresponding adjective adjective girthy which he promptly ran into the ground (i.e. overused). Can I now teach him the word beamy?? Love to you three.

    On US Navy ships we have a PA system that can public address the entire ship from the Bridge, this is called the 1MC (pronounced 'One-Em-Cee). There is also a special phone on the Bridge that is a direct line from the Captain's stateroom/office to the Bridge so the Skipper can speak directly to the Bridge Watch Team at any time, this one is affectionately known as the 'Bitch Box'. Just a couple ideas for communications upgrades to the 'Boffice'... No need to thank me... really, you're welcome.

    Sailing followtheboat I think the regulator would do a better job but a small filter capacitor would be cheaper. The problem is calculating the value. MOV’s would be nice.
