Total Gym vs Weider Ultimate Body Works | Pros and Cons of each

Фильм және анимация

After my overall review of my new Total Gym Fit a few days ago, I wanted to give a full side-by-side comparison of my 10 yr old plus Weider Ultimate Body Works and the Total Gym. Both machines are great in my opinion, but I wanted to highlight some of the main differences in both. I'll cover things like height, size of glide board, attachments, and how various exercises feel on each machine. I timestamp everything, but there's some more information found in each section other than what's highlighted in each section. Let me know if you any questions about either product. Thank you for watching.

The roller wheels for both are available online. The Weider's wheels will start to make a grinding noise when they start to fail. Also, you can put the front portion of both onto a aerobic stepper (to lift the front to a steeper angle) to add extra resistance for muscle building improvement.

Fantastic review! I've owned a Total Gym in the past and I agree with everything that you said. I've switched to a pilates reformer which is like the Rolls Royce version of the Total Gym. It has a much thicker, wider sliding pad. Bigger, thicker frame tubes, much more stable etc. However, all of that "extra" makes it roughly twice as heavy as the Total Gym! After watching your review, I'm beginning my search for a used model of the Weider Bodyworks. Thanks!

8:35 One thing to make note of, is that for the total gym, it is entirely possible not to hook up the pulley to the glideboard, and still do many types of exercises. You can still do the chest press for example. If anything, your resistance will literally double. Of course, because the cord is longer, your glideboard is going to be lower on the track. Simply sit further down on the glideboard to prevent bottoming out. Which brings me to another important distinction. On the Weider, because the pulley on the glideboard always stays on, any exercise you do with the corded handles will limit you to the various resistance levels pre-determined by the angles of the glideboard (unless you add bands). On the TG, I have the option of hooking up the pulley or not. I can have the glideboard at max level 12, unhook the pulleys, and literally have doubled my resistance. And if I want less resistance, I can keep the pulleys off, and just lower the angle of the board. The other option would be to hook up the pulley and increase the angle of the board. For my bodyweight, level 6 with pulley, is equivalent to level 2 without pulley. That allows me to do some exercises with a lower angle of the glideboard for the same amount of resistance, and to me, that's a *BIG* deal. More options, more flexibility of use.

This side by side comparison is exactly what I was looking for. It helps me decide between the two machines. For the difference in price the Weider machine is quite impressive! I am like many others in that I am not sure I want to spend $1500 to try a sliding board machine. I may not like it, but at the same time if I do like it I want a smoother more rugged machine which leans me towards the Total Gym. As inexpensive as the Weider machine is I may start with it and then get a more expensive Total Gym to add to it. Thanks for a good honest comparison of the two. Well done!

I have the other (red) Bodyworks. And I got the Total Gym 1000 for $20 at an estate sale. Love both! I have one high to use maximum resistance for legs and back. The other lower, for chest, shoulder, arms. I also use a Gazelle Edge together with them. Great devices! I use to think you don’t need to exercise as an adult, wrong! Totally wrong! I hate, hate, loathe Calestenics. Reminds me of Army forced P.T. But, my devices are fun. Crank the tunes and go to work! I got both, to avoid wanting the other!

Thanks for comparing the two. It seems that overall, for the price, the Weider is pretty close. I'd like to know how either of these would work for someone 6'4", and someone 5'2"? Specs only speak of body weight, but height matters a great deal too.

  • @hybridresistance

The sled board is actually longer on the Weider so you could lay down comfortably, but it has a longer frame/glide even compared to the XLS model. So for that, I'd say the FIT would be better if you're taller. But with that said, you can still position yourself to get a lot out of a number of exercises on the Weider.

I definitely appreciate the comparison! I just can't justify the extra cost for the Total Gym for myself. I mean, you can purchase 8 brand new Weider machines for the price of the Total Gym. If it's getting kind of beat up after 10 years, just get a new one with fresh cables and rollers. BTW, do you know if the larger Total Gym squat platform fits on the Weider? I was actually thinking of trying to make one that's wider and longer for mine. Maybe find a welder who can put one together.

  • @hybridresistance

    @hybridresistance

I added 10" galvanized piping with a coupler to the leg platform on the Weider to extend it to a similar extension of the total gym. It only cost me less than $5 and five minutes to make the transformation. I think the glide for leg work is smoother on the Weider but the Total Gym is better for most other exercises.

Good stuff, I've got the total gym apex g1 (cheapest one on Amazon) and experienced similar cons when trying some of your workouts Glute kickbacks are tricky and limited compared to the weider. I have to set the wing attachments on the 2nd slot, take off the foam padding, set the level to 5 (probably 7 or 8 on yours), hook the non-kicking side handle on the kick-side attachment, then bring the kick side handle over the under bar (if you don't the cable ends get sucked into the pulley, damaging them), and I cannot do straight leg, I have to keep the cable close to my knee or it gets caught

  • @hybridresistance

That's good to know about how those glute kickbacks work on that machine. I haven't tried them yet on my TotalGym FIT. I do like the simplicity of the smaller models like the g1 though. Did you ever get a squat stand for it?

@@hybridresistance yea I picked up the off brand one that Amazon recommended, was about$70, seems comparable size wise to yours, and the color matches the G1 too. Seems fairly sturdy so far, and I'm 265. Your videos really helped me get a lot of use out of my total gym, you have a lot of unique exercises that weren't included in their exercise chart. While I'm chatting with you, I know in some of your videos you asked for viewer feedback about the format of your videos. I think you could do 2 sets of videos for each workout (double the work, I know) but you get to fit more viewers needs. First, short video detailing the workout, with you introducing each exercise, demonstrating recommended form, and providing any tips you feel the viewer should know, with the workout/circuit summary at the end of the video, as well as timestamps in description for each exercise. Second video would be one the viewer could follow and workout with you. You set the pace, provide on the spot instruction (I'd assume you'd record the workout, and just voice over it so you can focus on reps, breathing, rests, etc), allow the user time to adjust level between each exercise, or attach equipment, etc. Not saying do the workout twice, you can record yourself doing it once, and use the footage to create both types of videos. Some days I just want a quick rundown of the workout, and a list of exercises and just get to it at my own pace. Some days I lack motivation and the second style could be useful to get into the flow yourself. Just some ideas, hope your channel picks up, it's a gold mine of great info. Thanks =)

I mentioned it briefly in the video, but I actually like the way the weider feels more so than the total gym. Yes the total is smoother for sure, but the Weider has a more tense feel to it that makes it feel more like a free weight. I also like the narrow set up on the weider for arms and back. The pulls up (and pull up bar) I prefer as well. Another big plus is that the glide board material is not as slick as the total gym. Others have told me even after years of owning that they still slide around on it. The total gym is really better for a smoother ride, for flys, and the ability to have the larger squat stand. Hope that helps. Thank you for your comments.

@@hybridresistance Thanks! I will drill a bigger foot plate to the weider squat stand and see if adding some extenders or something to the cables will address the fly issue. I do like the design of the weider better. The weight limit is an issue but i will attach a bar to it for some weights and the rest of the needed resistance can be handled by bands, which fortunately or unfortunately i have a ton of as i went through a band crazy phase : ) Have a great night

The big drawback on the Weider is the lack of a larger squat stand upgrade, not as smooth/sturdy, and slightly limited sled length because of the larger board. The bungees actually do actually provide a decent amount of resistance and often used them for increasing the tension.

I’m planning to buy a total gym for my mom and I’ll encourage her to watch both your and Rosalie’s content for guidance. To my question: Did you consider the Total gym Xtreme when doing your research? It comes with 6 of the most popular accessories, about the same dimensions as the fit, 12 levels of resistance, 350lb weight limit and is less than 1/4 price of the fit and less than double the price of the Weider. Check it out at Costco and tell me your opinion on whether it’s a good middle-of-the-road option between the two price wise. Thanks again.

I very much appreciate your comments. It means a lot. I am aware about Costco's Total Gym Xtreme that they sell. In fact a couple weeks ago I was searching for it (as I am a Costco member) and could not find it listed. I see now that it's back up on their website. I came across this review when I was looking into the machine that doesn't put the machine in a positive light kzread.info/dash/bejne/opuJqKVpfsrfeLQ.html but he might have been a little harsh on the product. I personally would compare it to the Weider Ultimate Body works which is much cheaper. It does seem a bit smoother though and handles a larger weight. Another option that seems pretty decent in build quality and is much cheaper than the XLS or the FIT Total GYms is the GR8FLX machine on amazon. I also link that down below in this video. Hope that helps.

If you look at the bottom of the Weider, there are band ends, like bungee cables. Below the foot plate is a series of notches, those notches are for the bungee cables on the back of the slider, to add resistance. Once you max those, then add bands.
