    Last year under Peter Bosz you could see some of the elements of total football restored again in Ajax. A clear example which can serve as an illustration would be switching often from 4-3-3 to 3-4-3 when in possession (as was explaining in the video, with the libero stepping up into midfield). This was achieved either by one of the back four stepping up into midfield or both full backs stepping up and the defensive midfielder/deep lying playmaker (Lasse Schöne in this case) dropping deep to form a back three with the centre backs. It was a really interesting to see Lasse Schöne who had been playing as a winger or a CAM in previous years to pass the ball around with the centre backs looking for a pass forward to start an attack. Schöne had some problems if the opposition pushed aggressively, but against more defensive opponents it worked very well, suddenly providing the back three with a great range of passing and creativity to build up from the back. Anyway, great vid! Thanks from (as you might suspect from this post) the Netherlands and an Ajax fan!

    Did Ajax under Peter Bosz struggle with long balls and man marking of midfield players and if so what did he change?

  • @mvdbergrede

    @mvdbergrede

    6 жыл бұрын

    They actually fared alright in that regard, before they met ManU. In Sánchez they had a defender with great pace and in Onana they still have a good sweeper keeper; those two dealt with long balls well enough usually. Against man marking sides the individual skills of Younes and Traore, who are both excellent dribblers, and the counter attacking opportunities caused by Ajax' aggressive pressing usually provided them with enough chances. But in comes ManU; the excellent defense put in place by Mourinho was too much, even with Younes and Traore's dribbles and furthermore immediately playing long balls meant Ajax' pressing didn't result in much. Even though ManU didn't create a ton of chances with their long balls, Ajax' very young and inexperienced defense was always prone to make some errors which Mourinho targeted very effectively. I like Peter Bosz, but truth be told, Mourinho just beat him tactically that match (although ManU having about six times the annual budget of Ajax (IIRC) also helped obviously).

  • @Kisarez

    @Kisarez

    6 жыл бұрын

    DC 96 Man marking could be a problem against Ajax last season, since there was so much mobility and pace by all players, they switched as well. Zonal marking could pose a problem since many players excelled in between the lines and small space (particularly Ziyech and Younes). It really depended on how well the team executed - Man Utd forced duels with Fellaini en Pogba winning most of them and Ajax lacked an answer. They also had trouble executing their creativity against Man Utd's excellent defence, and problems with pressing (Utd forced the long ball and personal duels)

  • @kielutube

    DC 96 i dont think weigl solves the issue tbh as he is also not very mobile nor is he physically imposing, thus he is very prone to defending longballs/quick counterattacking runs. Though having so many injuries at the back doesnt help, Dortmund clearly need a true holding midfielder in the mould of a javi martinez. That should help in supporting the defence and puts less burden on the centrebacks in case of facing strong counterattacking teams

    Johan Cruyff almost implemented 3-4-3 diamond for the Barcelona side of the early 90s known as the Dream Team, where the defensive midfielder in the diamond would almost drop back into the defence to spray passes and while the two center midfielders would cover the wings as they would not have had any wingbacks

  • @Kisarez
    @Kisarez6 жыл бұрын

    Great video. You can write a book on total football as a tactic and its history, but this was a good intro. Defenders were indeed not minding traditional defending, Michels and Cruijff preferred to think of the 'total' team defending without ball (the striker is the first to press, all will follow accordingly), or attacking as a whole. In the latter, it is explained why wingers were turned into backs by Michels and Cruijff (e.g. Krol was originally a winger) but also Van Gaal (Reiziger) and Bosz (Sinkgraven). They rely less on physical strength, more om technical prowess and tactical insight. Ronald Koeman is also an example, like Guardiola, both utilized as upcoming centrebacks by Cruijff. These players would have no stress like other defenders being pressed, since they were used to it as midfielders, is one of the things Cruijff thought. They could find solutions forward, play the ball deep, in contrast to defenders being primarily stoppers. It really is amazing to read about football tactics in earlier years and literally see the parallels and influence in modern day football.

    Bruce Arena's tactics at the 2002 World Cup with the USMNT. Yes, players like Mathis, Friedel, O'Brien, Donovan, Beasley and Reyna helped us achieve a quarterfinal finish after finishing last in 1998, but Donovan and Beasley were only 20 and everybody else, besides Reyna, played far better than their skill level. Arena got the team to perform as a collective unit and greatly helped Donovan and Beasley, more so Donovan, grow up quickly on the pitch. Donovan went from a decent performance against Portugal to being the best player on the pitch against Germany. If only he could have put away one of his chances against Khan. If only....

    Referring to the spine , Neeskens was right half not center half which was Haan. The reason the Dutch lost to the Germans was that did not play total soccer with pressure. As van Hanegem stated the team had split in their thinking into two halves of which one halve wanted to go forward and the other wanted to move backwards.

    Great, great video. Could you do an explainer of (The History of) "The Barcelona Style?" There has been a lot of understandably glowing, but seemingly loose, talk in the last decade of "The Barcelona Style." Many Barça fans are excited about a return to "The Barcelona Style" with the recent introduction of Quique Setién as coach. But what is this style, and more essentially, is it rightly and accurately referred to that way? Concepts such as "total football" and "possession football" do not originate in Barcelona, but rather, as explained here, stem as far back as 1915, to places like The Netherlands, Austria, Hungary. So then, how do we characterize **FC Barcelona's** style of play, going back prior to Johann's time as a player and as a coach, going back throughout the years since the Club's formation in 1899? Does the concept of "tiki taka" best attach narrowly to the gifts of the four figures Pep, Xavi, Iniesta, and Messi? If so, is that style then unique to those four men, and absent those four men, does tiki taka disappear generally under the posession aspect of "total football?" I understand this would probably be a deep dive piece... but I can't imagine a source better suited to do it right than Tifo.

    Shout out to Busquets, too - he probably belongs in that company as a fifth. But once we move to also start including other likely greats - say, Dani Alves, Frenkie De Jong, Arthur Melo, and others - that distinctive tiki taka magic begins to get oh-so-slightly diluted, and eventually becomes another kind of less thrilling (even if also still really beautiful) possession play.

    @@jeffpaige6149 The Barcelona style is total football. Coaches like like Michaels and Vic Buckingham introduced total football to Barcelona. And Cruijff introduced it in the modern age to Barcelona. While it is total football Barcelona have had a focus on the passing aspect of the game.
