Repair of a Toshiba V5470B (Beta / Betamax format). Part 2 of 2. The video recorder which keeps developing new faults as we work on it, any normal person would just give up. Working examples of this model are now very rare.

Great video well done for persevering. I saved one of these from a skip about 20 years ago. After putting in some belts and a brief power up it worked but gave the mistracking effect you resolved at the 2 hour mark! Maybe it is time to drag it out and finish the repair - with a new flat belt!

I didn't expect the capstan belt to be the problem. When I first saw the problem, I screamed inside "check the bloody capstan servo lock adjustment". Nice work. :) Btw, I've heard the removable lid on top of the head drum was to use a hair dryer in case the dew sensor kicked in, so it would make the machine dry up faster. I can also see that this machine has forward and reverse search, something you didn't demonstrate.

  • @video99couk

I had read that it can do reverse search but I'm not sure how to use it! Read the manual. The capstan servo lock adjustment, I think you mean the freewheel speed, I could "feel" that it wasn't the cause in this case. It does commonly drift out on older Sony models. The theory about the dew sensor is about as plausible as any I can think of. Early Sony machines had fan blades on the top of the drum, presumably to keep air flowing and hence reduce the chance of condensation.

Nice job on finally getting it going. An interesting machine for sure, almost like it was trying to be a Sony SL-5400 from 1979. In 1980, Sony offered the SL-5600 top loader and the SL-5800 Top loader but the 5800 was really high end with 4 heads, variable speed scan on the remote and previsions for upcoming PCM adapters.

I was unaware of those Sony models, I'm guessing they must have been NTSC-only. The SL-5800 seems a bit pointless because in PAL lands there was the SL-C7 in 1979 which was all electronic, so that would have been a better model for a 4-head variant (albeit hopelessly unreliable!). Maybe for some strange reason, Sony had more advanced PAL machines than NTSC for a while. Any of these all-mechanical machines are complex and tricky to maintain. I did however service and sell a Sony SL-3000 portable mechanical machine a couple of years ago, and that went much easier than this Tosh did.

@@video99couk The SL 5400,5600 and 5800 are "soft touch" piano keys, and the FF/RW can be activated during play for "BetaScan". The 5400 I had seen in use in middle school was dead reliable, I don't ever remember it failing, and the school had hundreds of educations Betamax tapes and only 2 machines that and an SL-100 front loading mono SuperBeta with no A/V input (strange machine).

I used to fix up C7s a long time ago. Common problems include idlers, belts, capacitors especially on the servo panel, all the clock buttons jam up and have to be replaced with something of a suitable size, sometimes the power supplies blow up and that's a harder fix. I got quite good at replacing video heads without using an eccentricity gauge too. But it must be 20 years since I last worked on a C5 or C7, or a C6 for that matter.

The buttons on the timer will be replaced coming weekend. It's already working perfectly except for the timer as of now. Really satisfying project this one. Let's hope the PSU won't go, but as it will not be plugged in all too often for extended periods of time (but often enough to keep it alive) I don't think that's gonna be a problem.

I recall repairing 100's of these V5470B when they were under Warranty. I do not recall any common issues with them while under warranty except for the take clutch for play mode. I cannot recall if this clutch was used in any over mode except for forward play mode. I do know if a new replacement part was not available, this clutch can be carefully dismantled and give the white felt pads/rings a brush with a toothbrush can rectify the issue.

Finally it runs! well done! I do belive that my SL-C7 is much more reliable. Rewind tip (from experience with my C7): check that all the guides on the loading ring rotate freely: if you press the retainers down (as to prevent the guides from spinning) the unit will fail to rewind properly. I am not familiar with the brand name of the unit in the mystery box, but the name would suggest a telecine unit. Best Regards, Moshe.

I used to fix C7 machines but I got fed up with them. Good hint about the loading ring guides. On Sanyo machines by the way, some of those guides cause tape squealing if they are not clean. Skantic was a well known European manufacturer in the 1970s and 1980s. I'll give you one clue: The thing in the box is a video recorder! So, what could the format be?

The idlers tyres on these and any other older bigger beta unit are rarely cracked. They need removing and their surface refurbishing lightly with 120 grit paper. IF the plastic part they rub against isn't grooved you can do this too with a needle only. You will get full torque again. Turning them inside out doesn't work as the inside is shiny.Manufacturers started to put fine grooves on all their later friction based gears as they too realised a smooth surface fails after time.

You say the Sanyo's are terribly noisy during lacing /unlacing. Not if the components are all sorted lubed/greased .They will give a usual light gear noise but will be noisier if the drive belt is original for sure. That Tosh is terribly noisy during the fast wind modes. Making a Sanyo seem mightily smooth.

Now that was a real pain in the bum, it was developing faults all over the place, you have done amazingly well :-D Well done :-D Repairing some things can be bad, but doing repairs on camera must add a lot more pressure to the task. What will other people think about you or your methods?, i would say you had a bucket of patience as far as i could see, and you won :-D. i have done much the same as you with drive wheels and worse :-D.. At times i thought it was a relative to arkrights snapping till :-D Pinch rollers can playup and act differently with different tapes i've found. The tension band setting can upset everything, the tracking goes west and "Tape drifticus " on the pinch roller or the reference shelf can happen. You would not think it could have such an effect, it did on some of the machines i've repaired. The capstan bearing can be the cause of tape drift as well as a warble, because of the capstan riding around on the inside diameter of the phospher bush. Also the capstan won't be bolt upright, so more tape path problems. The reels on some machines have a fine sandblasting effect to help with the drive, i've scrubbed vertically with 1000 grade sand paper, just untill it loses the shine :-D. Sorry about the long waffle, but i did watch all of it and so many things came from memory from the days of video bodging.... errr professional modification i mean :). Well done, smashing repair :-D

I know back tension can be fickle which is why I was careful not to upset it. See my other videos for the Sony EV-S9000E Hi8 deck, this has very critical back tension. Too low and the tape will hop over the pinch roller. I know some of the repairs on this were not ideal, but when you can't source any spares, you have to do what you have to do. In the end, the machine works really very well indeed, it's just a bit noisy which may well improve with a bit more running time. Anyway, well done for watching the entire video! You may be the first to do so. I'm hoping to do some shorter ones, but the Skantic machine is not likely to be a quick fix. I'm hoping to be able to mount the camera in a better spot soon so everyone can see what I'm doing.

Ahh the skantic in the massive box lol, i thought it may be a timebase corrector console of some kind. Never heard of that name. Hey you did an excellent job with the bits you had, i have been in the same place many times, sometimes removing a tyre and adding two turns of parcel label to the wheel part, then put the tyre back and it's often good enough to make it work. I never asked much for my repairs, a few quid for solder and electric. I always told the owner to save up for a new vcr as i can't garantee it lasting because of so many parts being worn out. They often amazed me how long they worked for, 2 years and more was the typical, maybe my bodges were a bit too good lol :-D I was very naughty with module type stk multi regulators, just evil on my part, 30 quid for a module !! The vcr wasnt worth that much lol.

@@zx8401ztv Skantic was a Swedish company, part of Luxor at the time, Skantic is now just part of the Turkish Vestel brand. So no, it's not a timebase corrector, it's a domestic product. I think it was a mistake by Toshiba to be making a mechanical type machine at this time, it should have been a more modern design. Sanyo did a fantastic job with the VTC5000 and the same basic mechanism was still used on their later machines like the VTC-M40 The Skantic isn't a film scanner, it's much more useful than that.
