Red, using an E-Torx bit rather than vise jaws would have let you test the actual Torx bit rather than how well your vise grips the hex on your Torx bit shank. As it stands, this test is not really a valid test of how the tool will actually perform when used in a somewhat proper way. No disrespect meant, but your methodology was no good. Maybe next time you should do a post that asks "how should I destructively test X?" That way you won't waste money twisting the heads off of screws. Some of us really know how to break stuff and will share. As for Torx vs hex fasteners, I have seen way more wallowed out hex fasteners than Torx so I prefer Torx when available. I also prefer using proper torque on small fasteners so I have a Seekonk in-lb torque wrench along with sets of Torx and hex bits to use with it (that I don't use for anything else). Ultimately, I agree with your conclusion, a cheap torx bit is not necessarily a weak Torx bit but it would have been nice to see an actual ranking.

Came up with the same suggestion while watching. An impact-rated E-torx socket with a torque meter attached may have been more revealing. Thanks for the test anyway. I wish there were more tests like this, so people could see what they pay for.

I love my S-K tools for stuff that NEVER leaves the shop. However, you're absolutely right about these Torx sockets. No matter the brand or cost, they WILL eventually twist. It's just the nature of the beast (bear?). When I'm shopping for new Torx sockets, I like the ones that get narrow close to the bit. That way, I have a better chance of getting into a tight spot when I don't have a long bit.

I have the capri set of torx and allen. I've broken 3 of the torx bits on rusted bolts. More brittle than I had hoped but they did replace them when I filled out the warranty on their website. The ones that broke were all the TT type with the hole in the end of the bit which does weaken them significantly. Your test method wasn't all that great here, but I appreciate the effort.

Spax are the BEST for construction screws! GRK (the other one at home depot) are ok, but use a smaller torx size. For the next test look into the Fireball Tools vise. There is a KZread video where he tests all different vises and then one where he builds one that is beautiful and like 2 or 3 times stronger than the best store bought one. Maybe it is overkill, but it would be a fun project and would FAR outperform the one here that let go of the bits. Great video, but I wish there would have been more "sudden, violent release of energy" and shrapnel lol

Torx are supposed to be more highly engineered or fancier or something than plain old internal hex or Allen socket drive but yet people seem to have more trouble and complaints with torx. Could it be using the wrong size, not getting the bit all of the way down into the socket (need to clean it out first?) or mix up between Torx and Torx Plus? "Snap On Gold"? (gold color bits that are said to be different than the regular dark color ones) complexity to make your mechanic have to buy more tools? might be interesting to try the "hand impact driver" such as Snap On's PIT120 or Koken "Attack Driver AG112H" in a last ditch effort to get something loose (probably would be better with impact rated bits but might not be as damaging as a "real" impact or air gun (have to remember to set the direction to "lefty loosey" before starting to whack that hand impact driver!)

That was my thought at first too but, you'd need to use an actual pipe vise for a test like that. The flat jaws on the vise in the video would allow a round socket to slip very easily. The vise used probably has what could be considered pipe jaws below the flat jaws but, in my experience, they're only intended to hold pipe for cutting, not for heavy use. My Chinese Craftsman vise actually has 2 different sets of "pipe jaws" under the flat ones. They hold pipe for cutting just fine but, if I try to tap pipe, they don't hold.

You could have pulled on the vise like a little girl for some brands and pulled it hard as heck for others, no way to tell. Edit: Ignore me, I'm an idiot... I threw my broken Kobalt in the trash... IT HAS A LIFETIME WARRANTY!!!! 🤣 For what it's worth, I recommend Kobalt, that T-50 took some abuse before finally giving up the ghost in explosive fashion to the Milwaukee Fuel High Torque on a seized truck bed bolt (that is actually a TP-50, lol, took out lots of them, but eventually blew apart.)

Hmmmm. This was a test I only sat through because I wanted to get an idea about an Icon hex socket set. So there was no vids about them but there were about these torx. Not to mention as others have said you failed to be scientific about anything right down to the not having flat vise jaws. What a disaster to watch. You should redo this for your subs this was brutal.

You should have screwed a few torx bolts into the same metal as the bolt then welded the heads to the metal, then test the bits to failure. No offense, but yr test just showed the failure torque of the bolt not the relative failure torque of each socket. The vice test is questionable bc, as you said, it crushes the bit not reflecting real world use. Maybe you could vice some holt heads but that too puts unnatural flex into the bolt head.

Icon snap-on and SK all passed the test. But in the end I really did see that large of a performance difference between the most expensive, snap-on and the least expensive, duralast. I think the winner is whichever one gives you the best service that you can purchase locally and replace as needed as I see these as consumables

304 stainless isn't that great of a material. Nothing wrong with it, just not super strong. Yield strength is 31.2 kpsi, versus a grade 5 bolt at 85 kpsi and a grade 8 bolt at 120 kpsi. Camout shouldn't be an issue with a Torx. It doesn't have sloped sides like a Phillips or (non-gunsmithing) flat screwdrivers. You really need a better vise 😁 As far as those rounded corners in the hole for the anvil, that's the same thing you're seeing with the "flank drive" from Snap-On. You can't machine a perfect sharp inside corner like you can an outside corner, so you add a little relief in the corners so you can tighten the tolerances elsewhere. John @ NYCCNC like to call these "mouse ears", but you'll see this in a wide variety of places: on an engineers square, in the bottom of a v block, in the back corners of a machinists insert vise, etc. Even the little slots on my welding table have them so the tabs will fit snugly before welding the pieces together. Hex bits will strip out long before Torx or especially Torx-Plus.

In modern vehicles with metric fasteners, seat belt bolts (as well as many suspension fasteners) are most likely 10.9 which is actually "stronger" than grade 8. I can remember loosening/tightening Torx head door strikers etc. on many older vehicles with Vice Grips before Torx bits were common tools.

No Proto T45 socket bit unbelievable an American made Bit Driver with AS4984A standards. That you can buy for under 10 bucks. Also no Sunex, Carbyne, ARES or Cornwell or Wright socket bits. Of the three that made the finals two were AMERICAN MADE ( SK and Snap-On) only reason the ICON got to the end, it had longer shaft so more meat for the vise to hold on too( my opinion). The Mac socket not so sure about Mac sells both American made and China made versions. I wonder if the bear will try to use the warranty to replace these destroyed sockets. Maybe that's why Mac wanted to be there cause they have seen that Hit piece video on their plant in Mississipi that you did and they don't trust you. Really if you think about it that is some real Bear Balls you do a hit video and turn around and ask for freebies from them. I gave this video a thumbs up not the best comparison video I have seen but not the worse. Keep trying bear you will get better as time goes on.

Those MAC RBRT's are unique and proprietary; they are the real deal! Because of their design, they do not "cam out" . Also, they are a bit pricey, but if you work with alot of those types of fasteners, they are the only way to go! kzread.info/dash/bejne/rJ5o1dOun9fbZLA.html

This torx bit torture test made me completely lose faith in this channel due to the the lack of knowledge of real-world applications. High grade torx socket headed cap screws are widely available and commonly used in many (especially European) automotive applications. Clamping a bit in a cheap vise...really???

I love the idea of the test. After watching I understand why it would be difficult to test. That said all torx are not equal. Bought some craftsman a year or so ago and they were horrible, they would snap using a 1/4 ratchet drive without much pressure. They are a different company now I think so might be better. I do like the recommendation to use impact rated one's though
