Torvill and Dean on fire

ITV are planning to show Torvill and Dean's swansong appearance on ice from Canada, but a fire at the rink has delayed the start. Instead, ITV needs to pad, playing a documentary and filling airtime until the display begins. Here's the padding.

The BBC had to do some padding of their own as they were showing the performance simultaneously live with ITV - and the TV Museum channel has a clip of Des Lynam welcoming viewers who hung on to watch the postponed performance well after midnight.
This must have been unsettling. Cooped in front of your telly, ready to watch some Torvill and Dean then, a monotonous voice telling you a 'fire' has 'delayed' the World Championships. You could only hope.
This is the longest time I have ever watched figure skating.
I remember this! Wasn't there some hairy hoo-har about some of the regions staying on air later than planned to show the live event?
Peter Lewis at LWT on duty that night -- one wonders how much overtime he got paid.
Which documentary were they showing?
Kudos to them, really, for having so much *relevant* backup programming at the ready in case of emergency! It could have easily been more "That's Entertainment" and travelogues interspersed with Looney Tunes or Mickey Mouse!
