I like the peanuts volume test. Good idea, checking the volume is something most reviewers surprisingly don't do. Did you fill also the secondary pockets with peanuts in your test?

You are always so on top of new bag releases, thanks for posting! I'm curious - from your travel experiences, how often do airlines actually check the size of your carry on bag/personal item? And do you think it depends upon which type of ticket you buy (economy, premium economy), or just the airline you're flying? I've never had any airlines check to ensure mine are within the size limits here in the States or surprisingly in South America either (Avianca & LATAM). Been traveling with my Osprey Transporter 65L (24 x 14 x 13 inches). Would like to get down to a 40L bag for my trip to Brazil this summer though, and your videos are incredibly helpful!!

I really like your videos, clear enunciation and precise straight to the point. I wonder if Tortuga will improve on the water bottle pockets and come up with 35L & 45L for the V4 series.

They take feedback into account, so hopefully if enough people comment that they want a water bottle pocket upgrade they will incorporate it into the V5 when they make it. I doubt they will make a 45L. One of the reasons they said they shrunk the V4 to 40L was people said they wanted a slightly smaller pack, and 45 can get pretty big.

Very good solid review, quick but not to fast to follow. I have seen water bottle holders that have a zipper in the middle to expand the capacity. Probably a good tailor could make you one. My only complaint would be I like the idea on other bags of the straps being able to tuck inside a compartment. I admire the fact you can travel on 30l. Not quite there yet. But at least I am grown from 40 pounds to 25! Cheers Vancouver Island Canada.

As others have mentioned, I really appreciated you testing how close the actual capacity was to the manufacturer's spec., and covering the weight, including when packed out. Thanks! That's the Unbound Merino Travel hoodie, I've been testing it along with the pocket tee and travel pants. Like it so far, thin and soft, 100% merino but not itchy.

Great review, thank you so much for going into thorough detailing all the features! This definitely seems like a sleeker model than the Outbreaker! Question: I'm looking for a 40L bag to take on a 5 week trip in eastern Europe, mostly staying in cities (not backpacking through the countryside) and taking trains between them. I've narrowed my options to this Tortuga v4 and the Peak Design Travel Bag. Can you help me out with some pros/cons for my intended use case and maybe make a recommendation? I'm currently leaning v4, if only for aesthetics, but I'm really curious to hear your thoughts!

I think these are both great packs. Biggest difference I see is the stowability of the carry handles, carry comfort, and packing style. Peak Design straps are stowable if that's important, but Tortuga is more comfortable, with better shoulder straps and hip belt. Packing style is slightly different. Peak Design packs more like a duffel with a large main compartment, while V4 has the clamshell opening with the zippered top pocket. Tortuga also has much more organization and pockets.

It's a shame almost all these premium travel backpacks are heavy. Makes them impractical for me. I'll take less features if it means a lighter bag.

That's the tradeoff, features, comfortable straps, pockets, high quality fabric and zippers all add weight. It seems like a heavy bag, but if you compare it to similar packs (Aer Travel Pack 3, Able Carry Max, Peak Design Travel Backpack, Hemiplanet Travel Pack, Evergoods CTB), the weight is comparable.

I really love your videos. If I might make one suggestion, I wish you would pay a little attention to how an item might work or not work for women.

This is a great suggestion, but it's hard because I don't have much context to know how well a bag would work for a woman. I think collaborating with a female bag reviewer would be a good way to do this.

Some day it may happen. According to an email from their customer service, Tortuga is “actively working towards a solution,” and until then they recommend using a freight forwarder.

You were a big fan of the Thule Aion 28L. How does the new 30L Outbreaker compare? Not being a digital nomad, I'm leaning towards the Thule.

Those are both great bags. I really like the Thule because it looks great and has great organization. Tortuga's new pack is comparable in quality, has great organization, but a more comfortable backpack carry system. I think I would base my decision on which bag you like the look of more and your style of organization. They're both great very high quality packs and you can't go wrong with either.

As you had it packed, how necessary did you feel the hip straps were? I am wondering if I could save a little weight by leaving them off without sacrificing my comfort/back.

I didn't use them the way I had it packed, and I didn't feel like I needed them. For the 30L size I don't think you need them unless you have a lot of weight in the bag.

Thanks for the review! In case you still have the backpack, do you think you could measure the actual maximum size of the laptop compartment? I say this because I might want to fit a slightly larger than 16 inches laptop but the size of laptops varies in more ways than just the screen size can tell...

The laptop sleeve is about 10.5 x 15", but realistically you probably couldn't fit a laptop wider than 10" in there. If you wanted to store it in the back panel area not in the laptop sleeve you could fit up to an 11 x 18 laptop.

Thanks a lot! Well, the laptop I had in mind is 10.8 inches deep, so it might just fit outside of the sleeve… otherwise I think the 40l version has a bigger compartment, but then you give away the “personal item in an full overhead bin emergency” advantage…

We have the V1 and are still using it.... Would love to replace but once they removed the ability to pack away the backpack straps that's a no-go for us.

I think you're comparing 3 amazing packs and you can't go wrong with any of these. To add to the confusion, I would also have a look at the Able Carry Max, Evergoods Civic Travel Bag, and Hemiplanet Travel Pack. 5 Amazing sleek high quality travel packs.

@Brandon Hayslette, My 2 cents for use cases: AERSF TP3: business + travel. Pros: comfortable with good harness system, professional looking, and good organization. Cons: a little on heavy side, 4.12lbs for 35l and pricey at $249 for Cordura and $275 for Xpac material PD 30 vs 45: business + travel, 30: 1-3 days and 45: 4+ days. Pros: 30: good material and design like 45l, smaller, ~25% cheaper at $230, and less photo-centric 45: good materials and organization, photo-centric with side, back and front access, side pockets good for large water bottles, tripods, or other pouches, $300 is not bad considering you get 45l (standard 35l and can compress to 30l and expand to 45l) Cons: 30: still not good harness system but you have a lighter load, less organization than 45l 45: worst of the list for harness system even with hip belts and heavy. I basically put it away as when loaded up and going from airport to hotels to meetings, it digs into the shoulders and I had back problems. Don’t recommend it Tortuga: business + travel Pros: 30 v2: slim and slicker design than v3, great materials, good organization, and super comfortable with harness system 40: same as 30 but just bigger by 10l Cons: 30: a little on heavy side (1.8kg or 4lbs) and expensive for 30l at $325 but they worth it (IMHO). 40: a little on heavy side (2kg or 4.5lbs) and expensive for 40l at $349 but they worth it (IMHO). Heimplanet 28 and 34l Travel Line: business + travel Pros: 34: (didn’t get 28l so can’t comment): slim and nice design and quality materials, lighter weight at 1.66kg or 3.66lbs, professional look, good organization, although lighter harness system, still surprising comfortable with a heavy load, and decent price at €259.00 or $282.00 but if you buy on BF like I did, it’s 30% off. Cons: don’t have 40 or 45l options

@@nomad0714 what's your thoughts about true capacity in the 35L TP3? I'm looking at the xpac version too, which comes in at 3.9lbs. How's the breathability and comfort of the back panel on that Heimplanet? Great pros and cons list btw. I'm loving the Tortuga, but just so heavy for a 30L bag that I'm not sure I can justify it.

@@julesbarcelonarules, hello there! Re: AERSF TP3, it depends on how you pack. If you use all the organization pouches and compartments for your tech gear and health and beauty travel essentials, and then for the main compartment, clothes, then yes it’s a 35l pack. But if you pack everything in the main compartment, then no. The Tortuga 30/40l v2 has more capacity in the main. Re: Heimplanet 28/34l TL harness system, my back doesn’t sweat that much going to work or to/from airports and hotels with normal load. But if I fill it up and also have a carry on and helping out my kids and wife through security checks and getting on bus with full of people, then I will have a wet back. For the most part, I don’t feel it and quite impress with how its performing for me. I think when you deal with thermal physics, it’s about heat management not only with air channels from harness system, materials used, and air flow, but also our body’s reaction from biomass. I tend to sweat a lot on my forehead, cheek side, and neck before my back heats up. Hope that answers your questions and/or is helpful!

I was planning to use the organisation pockets in the TP3 for my tech items, travel essentials and have a separate toiletries bag. But I was also going to use the laptop compartment to store some clothes flat too as I'm often not travelling with a laptop when I fly. As they say, pack how the bag wants you to pack! So I gotta use what space they give me. I figure if the main compartment holds 30L in the main or close enough, then it's not so bad 🤷‍♀️

Do you have an edc rain jacket recommendation?

Depends on where you are, what you're doing and how much it's raining on what kind of rain jacket to get. Hot weather like South East Asia, it's too hot for a rain jacket so you want an umbrella or poncho. Emergency rain I would also use an umbrella or poncho. Light rain and windbreaker I would use something like the Patagonia Houdini. Heavier rain or cold I use the Outdoor Research Helium.

How much do the hip belts weigh? 4 lbs is so heavy for 30L, curious how much weight is saved by shedding the hip belt.

It's a bit on the heavy side, most of the weight comes in the back padding and shoulder straps. Hip belt is 5.4 oz. I'd say this bag prioritizes comfort, but if you want a more streamlined version they have the Lite which weighs a little less.

Agreed, but it gives a bit of context when comparing to something like the aer tp3 small which has the optional hip belts. It’s very similar in weight to the tp3 small xpac, and lighter than the regular non-xpac

It's nice, but I will never understand backpacks that weight 2 kg... That defeats the purpose of carrying stuff on your back.

It's a tradeoff between materials, features, comfort and weight. If you want a pack with a lot of organization, comfortable carry system etc. it's going to be heavier than a bag that doesn't have those things. It's heavy, but compared to other bags with similar features (Aer Travel Pack 3, Peak Designs Travel Backpack, Able Carry Max) it has a comparable weight.

@@OneBagTravels would love to see a packing peanuts edition comparing these higher capacity bags, like the Tortuga, Aer TP3, Minaal 3.0, new Patagonia Mini MLC, etc. It's hard to tell how accurate these bags are with their capacity.

I love the carrying system it offers and the sturdy waterproof materials, but the weight and overkill organization is not for me.

Check out their laptop backpack (kzread.info/dash/bejne/i31oqdKgZq7Ohpc.html) it's smaller, with a different packing style but is a much simpler pack at about half the weight of the V4.
