Torsion Spring Break Slow Motion | Garage Door Spring Wound To Failure

Breaking a Garage Door Torsion Spring - Captured at 240 frames per second and slowed down 4x speed.
Liftmaster Model GH501L5 Operator 1/2hp w/ 45:1 speed reducer, 12 tooth drive sprocket and 40 tooth driven sprocket. 1" solid shaft and a well broken in .218x2"x23" torsion spring @ 12 Turns.
Although the torque increases as the spring is wound up there is still a significant load on the operator starting at about 7 turns or the same as lifting a 105 # door with this particular spring and increasing to the 12 turns it broke at or like a 180 # door. This operator is capable of lifting thousand pound + doors when balanced properly or even if the springs are off by a hundred pounds or more. Always use the friction clutch modification on smaller doors and always install the proper safety devices.
**Springs are extremely dangerous and should never be tampered with by anyone without proper knowledge and training. Never over wind torsion springs as they can break during the process and release large amounts of energy causing personal injury.**

I thought the broken end would whip around like a weedwhaker on steroids, but I can see how it could kill you easily if it grabbed something; its speed was astounding.

Great video. I always wondered how the spring behaves when it breaks. Some garage repair contractors make it sound as if you're 'toast' if you're anywhere near it when it breaks or you let go of it when winding or unwinding. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks for the experiment. Very insightful! The most shocking moment was the $1267 quote I got from a garage guy.

Thanks for watching! I do not know where you are located or what the going rate is in your area nor do I know the specifics of your door system or what exactly they were quoting for that price so I cannot speak to whether that is unreasonable or not. Hypothetically speaking, say a 50k cycle pair of springs is $1267 and a 20k cycle pair is $750 and say a 10k pair for $300. Which is cheaper overall ? Assuming you will own the property long enough to get the value, the most expensive are actually the cheapest in the long run. Stay with me for a moment. You would have to pay for 2-1/2 pair's of the 20k springs to get the same life as the 50k pair, that is a total cost of $1,875 (for the "cheaper" springs) or 5 pair of 10k springs to achieve 50k cycles which would be $1500 total cost (again, for the "cheaper" springs) It is important to make sure you are getting apples to apples quotes and also to ensure that you are in fact getting what you are paying for. Springs are typically marked with their size and nowadays we have spring engineering apps on our phones, if a tech cant explain how springs are calculated and show you on the app what the cycle rating is based on your door specs they either do not know what they are doing or they are pulling a fast one. Again Im just using your 1267 number and making up the rest but hopefully it makes sense. Also consider that material prices generally go up ~5% annually so over time the spring prices will be higher and the "deal" you got early on turns into less of a deal as time goes on and each time those springs need to be replaced. Keep in mind spring prices are up substantially due to current material shortages.

Do not breathe on the spring-locks, as moisture may loosen them and cause them to break loose.

Is there any possibility of this happening by itself without fiddling with it? I'm afraid of it happening spontaneously and then it uncoils into a steel whip that would slice me open walking near it.

Yes, springs break spontaneously, once the steel fatigues from normal use it will snap releasing a lot of energy. The good news however is that the spring does NOT turn into a wet noodle and unravel then turn back to solid steel and slice people into pieces. In theory, if that were possible, the steel would need to be heated to a couple thousand degrees to become flexible enough to unravel then cool from roughly 2500 degrees down to a couple hundred degrees and all this in a matter of

Not likely with torsion springs. Extension springs on the other hand, very probable without safety cables.

I guess I came here to see a torsion spring snap and I wasn't concerned with the cinematography. But seriously don't waste your time with an iPhone. If you could use an imax camera on a dolly mounted to a track next time and sort of pan around it as it breaks it might help.
