According to Indian Copyright act " creations or Intellectual property(Videos/movies/painting/Books) is copyright to creators during their lifetime and after 65 years of the death of creator. you can legally download movies or books whose creator died 65 years ago.

Like you said already, torrent is a peer to peer file sharing protocol that keeps you anonymous (to a certain degree, for extra anonymity you need to take extra measures). yagnesh sanghani try HotSpot Shield, but I am not sure if its available on Mac, another one is Tunnel bear, which is free but has 1 GB per month data restriction on browsing. Btw I am talking about their browser plugins.
