i drove from toronto to vancouver in may 1996. i was 20. good times. lots of stops. being from the west coast i have seen enough mountains. the praries on a clear blue giant sky day is indescribably spectacular. picture dont capture the feeling

53:54 - Fun Fact, that bridge is the only bridge connecting Eastern and Western Canada, when that bridge is closed it's impossible to drive from one side to the other without going through the US.

The trip from Toronto to Barrie never thrills me. I skip it by taking the ferry from Tobermory to South Baymouth on Manitoulin. You get all the incredible scenery from Espanola to Thunder Bay.

I agree....have done this drive countless times and you almost feel the air change after Parry Sound/Sudbury. Like you can almost take in a full breath for the first time

@@travelxoverland haha yeah, I was young and reckless. And had just purchased my first sporty car. My gas mileage was probably terrible. Now, in my wiser years, I stop and smell the roses. There's a few beautiful beaches along the way to stop, especially in the summer.

@@paisano4297 I would say Sault Ste Marie is the general "half way stop" between Toronto-Thunder Bay. It's about almost 8 hours driving normal speed from each place and lots of nice places to pull over and rest or enjoy the scenery. Around the Soo(Sault Ste Marie) there are two very beautiful sand beaches on the Lake Superior shore. One is called Pancake Bay and the other is called Old Woman Bay(a little past Soo). A several mile long sand beach that looks like the ocean. And then there's some nice scenery around Parry Sound/Muskoka and then the whole north shore from Sault St Marie to Thunder Bay. Just be prepared for lots of construction stops(my parents just did the drive).

Travel along ON 400, ON 69, AND ON 17. However, it's also along the Georgian Bay Route and Lake Superior Route of the TCH which is between Coldwater, ON and Thunder Bay.

Yea it happens often lol. I do these longer trips in an old and slow 4x4 and I get better gas mileage if I stick to the speed limits, plus it's safer. Thanks for watching!

There aren't a whole lot of official scenic lookout points considering the distance you cover, but there are a few. The scenery is definitely underwhelming if you're comparing it to BC/Alberta for example, but for Ontario standards it's about as good as it gets. Hope that helps, thanks for watching!

Are there on route or rest areas with gas stations on the way?

Highway 11 is not used often to drive to distant places like Thunder bay. it's used to get to places like North bay or Algonquin park.

Totally agree, I haven't driven Highway 11 past North Bay but I'd bet it's not as scenic as Highway 17.

13 days we leave from Ottawa to Alberta and I'm not a fan of steep hills.😞 my husband will be driving however, this doesn't make me feel better lol what part is the worst for steep hills so I can mentally prepare? We are also pulling a small trailer so that worries me too.

If you take highway 11 north from North Bay, it's much flatter than highway 17. Hwy 17 is a lot more scenic though and worth taking due to that. The hilly sections are basically from Sault Ste Marie to Nipigon. But it's nowhere as bad as some of the hilly sections in parts of the Rockies (and even those aren't that bad because of great road design) If you're going to Calgary or Edmonton and not into the Rockies, it'll be mostly flat the rest of the way

Are there On Route fuel stations along this route? Or just small gas stations that require you to get off the highway?

Thanks for watching Michael! Yea plus those bugs on the windshield are hard to get off and sometimes make it worse by leaving big streaks. But these days I do try and do a better job of keeping the windshield clean.

You obviously didn't have any moose sightings or crossings, particularly on the highway 17 stretch. I want to do this trip from Mississauga. My plan is to break it into 2 even sized chunks of 700 odd kilometres with a break in between. So Mississauga to Sault Ste Marie. Stay the night there and onwards to Thunder Bay the next day. I am wary of Moose on Highway 17 though 🙄

That sounds like a good plan. It's good that you're wary of moose, hitting one could be really terrible. Try going slower in moose areas and try not to drive during dawn/dusk/night if possible.

Gas was $1.05-1.15/L last fall when I drove in a 12L/100km (20 mpg) SUV. Cost me roughly $200-225 (one-way). Gas is more expensive now but I'm sure your car will be way more fuel efficient than 20 mpg. Assuming your car gets 30-35 mpg, you could do it in less than $200 (factoring in the higher fuel prices now).

Does anyone know if we can spend the night at a gas station. Sleeping in our car

Some are ok with it and some might not be. If it's a big one like a truck stop, they're much more likely to allow it, but it's always best to just ask the employees inside

From Toronto to Thunder Bay in one day?? 15 hours? You only the driver? I used to drive from Vancouver to Hinton. Took us 2 days. I agree that you can't compare Ontario and the Prairie to BC and Alberta. But Ontario is still very nice, BTW.

Hi Shanaka, thanks for watching. You can definitely do it during the winter but try and avoid going during days with bad weather (especially the route between Sault Ste Marie to Thunder Bay due to the hilly terrain and fewer towns with services) if possible.

I’ve done it twice in the winter and it’s not bad on highway 17, roads are really maintained and plowed all the time, yes it sucks when you are behind the plow and doing 80 km and you cannot pass safely.You can do highway 11 where it’s more flat roads and that’s what the truckers take but when it snows it really gets dumped on that highway then 17. It’s very dark around five at night ,use good head lights and winter tires and always look at the forecast and government road advices from mto. But other then that it’s not that bad. I did it at Christmas time.

Yep first or second week of October is the best time to go. There's a website that shows you the level of the fall colours across different parts of Ontario, making it easy to find a good time to go
