TOROA STEAM FERRY, A SPECIAL INVITATION

Hi Everyone new and old Thanks for choosing to watch this video,
I'm sorry its a little long but We've been waiting since 2017 to see this old beauty.
born in 1925 and serving the Auckland community till the 1980s she rode the waters carrying up to 1250 Passengers ,
made of Kauri she was/ is truly a beauty of the seas and I bet many remember seeing her sitting in the port awaiting their turn to board her,
Just before Christmas i received a Email asking if we'd like a tour and to meet some of the men who are volunteering their time to restore the Toroa Steam Ferry,
of course we couldn't turn down this offer,
Apon arriving at the ferry siting along side the western motorway in Auckland We were Greeted By Gordon and Robert who were part of a larger team,
they told us about how it was saved after been under water for a Month( 4 weeks) and how they were having to rebuild it from the inside out bottom to top,
its a big project but these men have a passion and dream to see the Toroa once again steam its way through the waters doing harbor tours and even talked about opening a museum on a lower deck,
so come along and see what we saw and enjoy a true piece of New Zealand's Maritime History With my self and The dude.
thanks for reading this far, if you'd like to donate and help in anyway or just learn more please checkout their website below.
you can also buy Survenors' made from original parts from the Toroa

Look at the detail in that boat... imagine the love and hours that went into it originally .... a lot of work, but will be well worth it in the end.

+Hi Jay I swear I replied to this last nite, but definitely alot of Beauty in its details,.back when personal passion of a builder architect was put into things and they wernt just process kit sets,. They have a big job ahead of them but they've achieved alot already once its water tight and structurely sorted I believe the rest won't take them so long,.its a big job and they get very little next to no support from the government agencies like the historical society to fund it,.so its all word of mouth and publicly,.here we hope to spread awareness to this old beauty,.whats going on and that they still need alot of help..much love thanks for commenting and watching

I stumbled upon this by accident. I was the person responsible for her being on that site and also the one who found a supply of the steel form that is used in the ribs. It is a deformed angle which was common in ship building at that time but is no longer used. By chance I found a company in the UK that still had the forming dies in their store and even better were happy to do a very small run for the project at almost cost price. Sadly I no longer live in Auckland and watch from afar. Toroa was the last of her class to be built in the world and is the only one left still in coal fired steam. She is the largest marine steam restoration project in New Zealand and among the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. She sunk at Birkenhead wharf during a violent storm when a log hit her on the water line and stove a plank in. I was the first on seen as the over water alarm was connected to my phone and went off at 2 am. This started the longest four weeks of my life with 20 hour days becoming the norm. Many experts thought that she would break her back but she survived, testament to her design and build all those years ago.

A lot is being discussed about the water tight bulkheads. The fore and aft engine room bulkheads were in fact originally built as water tight bulkheads, when we first took her over we found the sealing glands for the drive shafts laying in the bilge where they had been for a long time. The fore and aft bulkheads were not water tight as they had only been built as collision bulkheads. Fun fact, at some point early in her life the forward bulkhead has been moved forward to allow the boiler to be moved forward as they needed more space between the engine and boiler to fire her efficiently.
