Toro snowblower starts then dies - Fixed - Cleaning the Carb

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Toro CCR 2500 starts easily, but then acts like it runs out of gas. I removed the carburetor, cleaned all the passages with a wire and it works great.

I've used this snow blower for the past 2 years in Wisconsin kzread.infoUgkxoHYZbq5g9fkcAtinlTqstNlje-UQkCHN and been quite pleased with my purchase. For the money this was a great deal, though you will have to buy a 15 amp rated extension cord which will probably add another $100. This snow blower was a back saver for me for the past 2years, while this isn't a 2 stage gas snow blower by any means, it performed admirably and was able to plow through 2 foot plus snow plow piles at the end of my driveway, through the 2 foot snow plow piles took quite a bit of effort and time. Still this was much easier than going at it with a shovel. My only gripe with it is with having to keep track of the cord and move it around as to not run it over, but that is part of the deal when you buy a corded electric snowblower.

Thanks for the video! I have a CCR1000 that is at least 20 -25 years old. The only thing I ever changed was 1 spark plug and the primer bulb. as well as a couple of scraper bars and the paddles once. Not bad for that many winters. Anyway, when my unit wouldn't start this year I looked at the carb and the first thing to fall out was the float valve. Thanks to your vid I was able to determine how and where it needed to go . For what its worth I used a pair of tweezers to get the spring back on the float. I also used a little Seafoam engine cleaner in the fuel to help clean things out. Thanks again.

Hello all! We just had a badass storm out on the east coast and one look told me I would never be able to shovel it out by hand. My Toro CCR2000 hadn't been used in two years since we barely had any snow for the past couple of years. Anyhow....primer bulb was all dry rotted and needs replacement but the engine would start and die. I knew the carb needed attention so I removed the red cover and took off the float bowl. Usually the needle and seat are not the problem, if you had fuel in the bowl when you removed it that indicates the float, needle and seat are ok. The thing you have to check is the main jet. The part that protrudes down into the float bowl has an orifice that allows the fuel to be sucked up. Take a wire from a bread wrapper remove the paper or plastic so you have just the wire and run it into the jet to make sure it is open. Spray some gumout carb cleaner up into the jet to make sure it is clean. Clean out the float bowl as it probably has crud in it. Put the float bowl back on and crank it up. Best of luck!

That bowl bolt also is the main jet on those tecumsehs yours is non adjustable others have the screw needle in them. It’s the MAIN jet. Investing in a cheap set of torch tip cleaners is a worthy investment. They are like small files. Select the cleaner that fits in each corresponding hole without making them bigger and just give a few in out passes to clean the holes out. Check out taryl fixes all here on KZread. He’s a mastermind with small engines and he always adds a fun little twist to his videos as well. As taryl would say…. And there’s your dinner!!!!

Thanks a lot! I tried a bunch of things, carb cleaner, replacing things etc and nothing kept it on stalling. I have an MTD but the carb looked the same. Believe it or not, it was that screw with the tiny holes. I cleaned those out and it worked like a charm! Who would’ve thought!

I have a Powerlite 98cc over 10 years old. It's always run great, but this year it would start when primed, but would immediately shut down. I cleaned out the bowl and jet, but it would only run on full choke. Any attempt to move the choke to middle position or no choke and it would shut down. I suspected there might be an air leak so I took it all apart again. I cleaned the jet and bowl again just to be safe. Then I noticed the old gasket had left some rough residue on the inside lip of the bowl. I took some fine sandpaper and gently rubbed off the grit. I did not have a new gasket, but the old one was reasonably intact. I rubbed my fingers along the inside and outside edge of the gasket to be sure it was relatively clean. Then I put a little plumbers silicone grease on my fingers and rubbed that on the gasket to give it a light coat. I also rubbed a light coat of the silicone grease on the inside bowl lip. I carefully placed the lubed gasket on the carb, then seated the bowl over the gasket, and screwed in and tightened the jet at the bottom. After several tries of priming and starting, this "mighty mite" started and ran flawlessly.

I've worked on enough of these, after you clean carb, install a in line fuel filter and run engine dry at end of season and will be fine next season.

Use non-ethanol in any gas-powered lawn equipment, 4-cycle or 2-cycle. I can only buy it in 91 octane which is fine. Been doing it for four or five years now. No more carburetor problems - lawn mower, snowblower, leaf blower, weed trimmer, chain saw, power washer. I've checked the mower and snowblower carbs and they are spotless, like brand new, and I don't drain tanks or use stabilizer.

At some point, you might want to replace that float. The soldering in the brass float eventually gives up and the float will fill up with gas, so the needle won't close and the carb gets flooded. A plastic float would resolve this. Also, the brass "thingy" at the bottom is your main jet. That picks up the fuel from the bowl and delivers it to the main fuel jet in the carb. Make sure you have the gasket, for that I did not see that on the video. Without it, the carb could leak fuel. ;-)

I really appreciate your input. The snowblower worked like a champ last winter. We will see how it does this winter. Most of all, thanks for letting me know what the "thingy" is. I have worked on carburetors all my life, but never knew which was the main jet (I know people swap that when they go to high altitude, but I never knew which one it was). Thanks!

  • @mrbubetube

you only need to clean the carb if the engine won't run at all. If this engine still runs but sputters, you can dump out the gas and run half a tank of straight sea foam or acetone. that should unclog the jets and you can refill with gas after that.

This is the later model with the Briggs R-Tek engine. In 2007 I bought a Power Clear 221QE which is essentially the same machine with a different shroud and sticker. From when new mine acted like this. Do they sell new snowblowers with pre-clogged carbs? Tried everything he did--gas cap, fuel line, fuel filter, spark plug, replaced carb, you name it. Replaced the coil (what a bi#$% that was) and hot restarts improved, but still always sounded like this one--constantly hunting. I can buy the same machine today used for peanuts, but won't. I always run my machines dry at the end of the season. My Tecumseh machines always started and ran flawlessly. Picked up a 25-year-old MTD 2-cycle which sounds far better than this.

I just bought one of these at auction for 60 bucks ( a 3hp one) , took it home and of course it didn't start. I didn't take the carb off though I just took the gas line off and shot some carb cleaner in there let it sit for 5 minutes or less even shot some starter fluid in and fired that sucker up. Smoked like hell for a bit but after I left it run it was good. only issue i have is the choke lever is real loose it seems like there is only a small spring to hold it in place .

Jordan, surely you are smoking something. As stated, in a 2 cycle motor the mix is to lubricate the motor, it’s not there to cool it. If you find it difficult to take a little 2.6 oz container and pour it into one gal of petrol, just maybe you shouldn’t be working around anything that has moving parts.

It’s not that hard you can but bottles premeasures for 1gal for a 40:1 or a 50:1 or if you but a big bottle and make small batches like I do some times for my chain say if I only have a small amount of cuttingly do I’ll just measure 1000ml of gas and 20 ml of 2 cycle oil. boom 50:1
