Unreal, this puts my heart in my throat. I was in Roca not too long ago. I've never seen anything like this before. While some may argue whether this should have been filmed, I think there is extraordinary value in showing it so that divers can see it, recognise it and have a thought as to what to do (and not to do) if it ever happens to them. Truly, thank you so much for sharing this!

Actuallu the vortex dessapear in some minutes, so if you have enough air and wait calm, you can go out easy when the vortex get weak

This phenomena is a result of two currents (vectors) colliding at near right angles and producing a resultant vector (with a rotational component) at right angle to both of the original vectors. In this case it was probably an up-welling (vertical) of a colder current that collided with a strong lateral current around Roca Partida.....

Banda pues después de estar en algunos foros en discusión con este video, varios llegamos a la conclusión siguiente: mantener la calma, la respiración serán cruciales, hacerte bolita (si si bolita), para romper la inercia del giro y el mismo te lleve a la orilla del vórtice, seguido de eso una buena y fuerte patada para salir del vórtice.... Ufff me canse de escribirlo, ahí te encargo la sangre fría pa hacerlo jejeje.... Saludos...

Compañerismo? Si vas al rescate, lo mas provable es q kedes como él, entonces en vez de haber una victima, habria dos, y asi sucesivamente..

Si siempre se evalúa la situación para no ponerse en riesgo. Ya nos han tocado 3 veces mas en los últimos años y hemos visto que se desintegra rápido, así que la mejor opción es aguantar un poco y después salir tranquilamente, lo único es tener aire suficiente y estar relajado... Como en juegos mecánicos jejeje, pero si lo ves mejor no acercarse... Hay que andar con cuidado...

You can actually see this in the video when the other diver is trying to help the diver in the vortex and there seems to be an "event horizon" that he kicks away from. Bottom line is don't loose your cool. Stop, think, act. The diver in this video looks like he was in a near panic (understandably). We are all fortunate to have learned from his experience.

This produced the horizontal rotational current shown on the video. All of this is governed by the rule of hydrodynamics and fluid motion. This phenomena is related to the creation of tornadoes, dust devils and why helicopters fly. Do a search on the "vector cross product" and "vector dot product" to learn more. in this case, it was fortunate that the resultant vector (current) was mostly horizontal and didn't go to the depths.

Fascinating... Alluring... And terrifying at the same time. I've never seen these before and hope I never do. Dropping your Weights would also be a last ditch option to escape... No substitute for level heads.

Yes actually is incredible right. Well this phenomena happened some time again in the same place, and we saw that dissapear in some minutes, so you need to hold on, breath slowly and calm... When the vortex is more weak after few minutes is more easy to go out. I dont recoomend drop the weight, you ca go up with out control and you should get a decompression or an other problem.

Si, el buzo solo se canso... Pero todo se quedo en el susto.

It would be very easy for this vortex to be so strong that you could not swim out of it. the only thing to do would be to inflate the BC and hold on. Even if the buoyant force of the BC isn't enough to immediately overcome the downward force of the vortex, you would gradually move away from center axis of the vortex. The power of the Vortex would decrease with the square of the distance from the center..thus the force it exuded becomes weak rapidly as you get away from the center.

espectacular, no parece muy peligroso, si no te pilla desprevenido. ;-) de todas formas que estabilizador de imagen utilizas parece bueno.

Si no es tan dificil salir, solo hay que esperar a que se debilite.... yo no tome el video, pero el videgrado estaba por fuera del vortex asi que el no andaba siendo revolcado, todos lo sbuzos fuera no tenian problema

a mi el vortex iba para abajo el tuvo la suerte que ahi se mantenia de otra forma la saturacion

Si son diferentes cuando llevan correintes desendentes, pero bueno es buenmo saber y comrpatir para cuando nos vuelva a suceder..

No hay una herramienta especial para sacarlos de ahí sin acercarse? Tipo un palo u algo de lo que se puedan agarrar?

Hola Fabriko, pues en realidad no existe una herramienta. Ya no nos ha vuelto a tocar salvo un par de veces, y no es como que andemos buceando con un palo por si pasa. Es algo que a mi me ha pasado dos veces en mi vida de buceo. Pero si pasa te contare, saludos

se me ocurre que se podria hinchar el chaleco para intentar ascender y poder salir del vortice aunque no sea un ascenso controlado

El vortex se deshace en unos minutos, lo mejor es esperar, ya que si tienes un ascenso descontrolado puedes sufrir de descompresión o sobre expasión puilmonar...

Aaaaahhhh, wanna know more about this crazy thing! Can anyone help translate? (LIKE the image stabilization window... keeps the viewer from feeling like they're in it, too!) As a videographer, too, I can appreciate the quandry here: do you keep shooting (as there WERE other divers there to possibly help, unencumbered by camera gear), or do you stop and risk getting stuck yourself? A line from the boat may not have been possible, from location standpoint. Of course we don't know...

Hi... Well the video was with a Go pro and the vortex was only a 1 meter wide, so the divers out side do not have any problem. This vortex happened in tha same place some times in the last years, and desappear in some minutes, so if you have enough air, you are calm and wait, the vortex get weak and then is more easy to go out...

El incidente fue al inicio del buceo. Asi que tenia bastante aire. Lo que sines que gasto mucho. Por que salio con un poco mas de la mitad del tanque.

si puede llegar a serlo si tienes ya poco aire, y te desesperar. Pero si tienes suficiente es solo aguantar y paulatinamente desaparecera...

La onda es no pelear con el.agua y tomar aire y a ver q pasa cuando se detiene no?

Exacto, disfrutar del viaje y eventualmente se desaparecera.... por que se deshace rapido has eso, unos minutos.

Es comoen la película de Nemo, gire y giren en el punto menos "grueso" por así decirlo, impresionante, la calma es fundamental hasta que logres salir del vórtice.

Apeligra a salir diaparado a la superficie y sufrir de descompresión (que podría ser mucho peor que el susto del vortice)

exacto si inflas el chaleco puede ser mas peligroso si no lo desinflas a tiempo. Una descompresión o sobre expasión seria peor que aguantar unos minutos de montaña rusa...

In this cases you always must to evaluate if is possible to help, because if is to dangeorous in not only one victim, could be 2 or more. In this case we saw 3 mora times this kind of vortex in the same place, and in some minutes dessappear, son you only need to hold on, bread slowly and the when is more weak, go out.... At least in this kind of vortex.

En un vórtice no puedes ayudar, un vórtice es casi invisible, te arrastra al fondo y tú no puedes ver qué es lo que te está jalando, los buzos no pueden arriesgarse a ayudarlo porque entonces también los arrastran a ellos.
