For Charlee, It's ok to feel afraid. Feeling afraid means that it's time to pay attention and make smart decisions. You can be brave at the same time. Being brave means that you are afraid but you keep going anyway.

You need to make the shelter “kid friendly”. With lights and games. Snacks and a radio.

I never realized that I had issues with tornadoes until we bought a house without a basement. You handled your anxiety pretty well if you ask me. I love that you didn’t transfer your fears and anxiety to your kiddos.
You may want to put toys and games in there for the kids, as well as make a go bag to take with you with snacks etc.

also, always have your important things like social security card, birth certificate, etc in a safe and dry place in an easily accessible area so you know where it is when the time comes. Obviously don't have them just laying out in the open, but do put them in a place where you know where they are and you can easily get them. Hell, make a copy of them if you have to and put them in a water safe bag and have it in your go bag so that they won't get ruined. Oh, and any prescription medication that you need. Don't forget that. It's really important. Have a first aid kit, extra water, a heating source, get a generator if you can to have down there, a hand crank radio like Just Patty said. Put some extra shoes and back up clothes down there as well. Oh, and helmets are also very good to have in a tornado emergency and goggles or glasses. Even if you have a shelter, you never know. Have it all in an easily accessible place so that when the time comes, you don't have to add stress to an already stressful situation or forget anything important.
I was in house fire that burnt a quarter of my body. My anxiety level goes off the deep end whenever I get a whiff of smoke. And when I smell that one sweet smell its a hole new ball game, I'm a crying, screaming hot mess. You did great as did your children. God bless.

I've been near so many tornadoes I swear I can smell them. When the barometric pressure drops down around 28 or less the sky turns green, and the birds stop singing it's time to hit the deck. Many comments on preparedness today. Take advantage of their advice Jill. Have Charles help you tidy up your shelter, a bucket, a pool noodle and a plastic bag makes a potty. Store some snacks, flashlights, games, extra change of clothes, first aid kit, and tennis shoes. Most can be bought at a second hand store and dollar tree. Make a go bag have it by your backdoor. If you have debris from a storm, you want your feet protected. Practice with the Charlee so she's not scared to go down in the shelter and have a campout.

You're right. One of my church members when we lived in AR used to tell us, if the animals react, then we should react. Not being originally from tornado alley, we clung to all of the advice of born and raised Arkansans. I'm glad you all are safe.
You did the right thing. When you here the sirens, you take shelter. Glad you are safe.
At least here in Kansas, when you hear the sirens, you need to take shelter. Storms can move quickly, so it's best to be safe and go right away. We had a tornado warning a month ago or so and I kept the kids' minds off it by playing would you rather and the kids took turns asking questions.
I'm an okie girl so we know about tornadoes and siren's here. You did great with Charlie and controlling your fear and anxiety. Proud of all of you.
NOAA Radio’s are so great for storms
"There's a lizard." That is just Fred the storm shelter lizard, here to keep y-all company.
Please get a weather radio! I've never been through a tornado but they scare the living daylights out of me, so I can imagine your anxiety! Glad you have a shelter to ride out storms. Stay safe!
I used to live in Indiana and we had a tornado split the tree line 20 feet from our house. I will never forget the sight of green and purple clouds and the deep fear I felt. I have lived in Maine for 32 years and will ever forget. I am soooo glad you have a storm shelter and are ok!
Happy you didn't get the tornado. Tell Charlee she was very brave. Maybe ya'll should get a radio that you can take down in the storm shelter for weather reports or even use in the house.
I'm so glad y'all are safe Charlee was so strong she kept you calm
I've lived through tornados and hurricanes.. Both very scary and dangerous. Thank you Jesus Your family is safe 😊
During Safety Month at work one year we gave all of our employees a weather radio, smoke alarm, and first aid kit. Maybe a mock drill every once in awhile with the family would make everyone a little more comfortable on those stormy days.
Tornados are scary period. I’m glad that there was nothing in the end. Great storm shelter. Just a suggestion, buy a 5 gallon bucket with a toilet seat type lid and put water and other essential including tp down there. A weather radio would be helpful too.
Charlee, you and June both did SO well staying calm and minding moma. I'm so proud of you both. Tell daddy to get rid of the lizard, but they won't hurt you.
In Hondo Texas. Just had a Tornado and hail storm. All your supplies should be in the shelter. You may lose internet and phone service. We lost ours for 2 days. You need a hand cranked radio. We lost our garden. I can always reseed and plant again. My husband did what yours did, walking around. He almost got hit by debris. We don't have a shelter. We were in our bathroom. The hail was so large it came through our roof and ceiling. It rained inside our home. Hail hit our bedroom windows and glass and rain went everywhere. Please listen to alarms and warnings and take shelter. The Tornado developed in our neighbors yard, took out her barn roof off and demolished our pump house and water well. That Tornado never appeared on the map. Please please take cover don't question. Be safe and God bless!
I know when we get a storm shelter I'm going to have totes with snacks/food, water, blankets, flashlights, batteries, knives, etc and a potty bucket too. You never know how long you'll be stuck in there.
When I was a child and there was a thunderstorm my Daddy and I would go out on our very small front porch with a small overhang and watch the sky, while my Mother would be under the nearest bed with my little sister yelling at my dad to bring her baby back into the house:)!! I love storms, but I have never lived through a full strength hurricane or a tornado. While I do have a healthy respect for storms and their power I do not fear them, but after living through the Flood of 1985 in the Roanoke Valley in VA I have both a heavy respect and a lot of fear of rising water and I have made it a point to not live in a flood plain in my adult life!!
I'm a California transplant to Texas. I freak out whenever we have a tornado watch. Texas people just keep doing their business and im like when do we take shelter? I've lived through plenty earthquakes but this is all new to us. So glad you were all ok.

I’m a Californian too and I know how you feel I’d feel the same I been through earthquakes but wouldn’t know how to act during a tornado lol
You are lucky to live where you can hear the sirens! Always go to safety! Your great parents!
When you live in tornado alley and hear the siren you need to seek shelter. When you see the animals seeking shelter you need to seek shelter too, do not mess about. Keep a waterproof container of some sort in your shelter with games or activities to keep the kids occupied during the time you are in there. Get a storm radio or something so you can keep in contact. Keep water and emergency food in there so people aren't running around getting supplies instead of running for shelter. Kevin and Sarah at Living Traditions Homestead have an excellent video from a couple of years ago on what to keep in your shelter and how to set it up. Have drills with the kids during good weather so the place doesn't have such an aura of scariness. I lived in a high tornado area when I was a kid and remember many hours of sitting in a basement under the stairs with the family :)
Hope everybody is well. We don’t get crazy tornadoes often where I’m from but when we do get them they’re devastating! so stay safe everyone❤️
My anxiety was rising for you! Lived through several bad earthquakes in SoCal when I was a kid. Natural disasters are no joke and so scarring. Glad all is well☺
Great job momma! It’s so tough to be brave and even toned when anxious to help your littles to be brave too ❤️
Glad you all are ok. What about putting some toys and blankets in the cellar for times like this. Maybe some candles and such in good sealable containers. Make it a cozy place. Let the girls decorate the walls. Maybe a radio that you store in the cellar too. Have an emergency bag stored near the doorway of your house with snacks and water, or juice boxes.
Glad y’all are okay. We had a touchdown here about 5 miles NE of us a couple of weeks ago that destroyed several barns and lots of farmland. Pauls Valley, Oklahoma. That cell went right over us. Just be aware and stay safe.
We are right next to you sister, North East Mississippi and my wife has a big fear of major storms. We always pray and ask the Lord to protect us and by his grace and mercy we have been spared.
Charlie is SUPER brave! Good job! We have lots of tornadoes 🌪 in Iowa. I remember the anxiety hiding in the tiny room as a kid. You did fabulous
Charlie broke my heart! We lived through a random tornado in NC when my son was 2. Lifted our house off the foundation and dropped it down two feet off. It was scary. I feel your pain. We moved to TN and the sirens went off while I was in dollar general with my two youngest. Major panic attack.
I lived in KS and OK, all my life and I hate it when those sirens go off. God bless y'all and pray you stay safe.
Oh my goodness I have tears listening to sweet Charlie saying he has never been in a tornado before. I could imagine his fear.
Have a FUN kit ready to grab if you need to go in the shelter again. Games and snacks for the kids... If you have time making the shelter space more homey will make it less scary for the kids... Like a Fort!
"I've never been in a storm shelter" .."it's ok, Daddy keeps it clean"hahahhaa. you know that tornados are no joke. but your kids can pick up your anxiety. Thank God you have a storm shelter. Stay safe during this season. Your tornado experience is actually a blessing for your children. Like others say: Toys Toys Toys! And new ones at that! And Chocolate!! xoxox
When the tornado sirens went off, you could here the anxiety in her voice.
Shoes and a survival bag right near your exits are a good thing to have ready. And stock your shelter with some bottled water and other stuff. Glad you all are ok
So glad y'all are safe and free and clear!
So glad y’all are okay and have a storm shelter! I live in central Texas and a couple of years ago my mom and I went through a tornado. It was the most terrifying thing. The roof and most of the siding from the home behind ours was completely torn off. Thankfully no one was at their home because I don’t think they would have made it. We were lucky that the tornado had lifted up off the ground when it came through our yard. I had never been scared of storms before then, and now spring weather is my least favorite. Still love the growing season, but anytime it storms I’m pacing, looking out windows and checking my phone for weather updates. Y’all stay safe
That siren made my brain go into anxiety mode! You did just great!
Yes a tornado siren means GET IN THE SHELTER. Have water in the shelter beforehand, and keep it clean of mold. That's what that smell was. Get a television 📺 in your house and in the storm cellar.
We live not too far from you in Morrilton and honestly we make a habit of going out when the sirens go off or even when there’s severe storm warnings with high winds. It makes my whole family more confident and less anxious when it’s just something we do. Plus I know my 11 and 13 year olds could open the door and go in if needed if I’m not home. I have a tap light right inside at the top of the ladder snd a few more throughout. We also hung an arm and hammer brand humidity bag thing down there that pulls the moisture out of the air and reduces that moldy odor by a lot. Raid essential oil bug killer and fly swatter is a must too. Recently put a small broom and dust pan to sweep up dead bugs and random debris when we’re hanging out.
We don't have a TV either. We got rid of it about 3 years ago and it is/was the BEST CHOICE we have ever made for our family. My Daddy called us also when the storm passed through Sunday. We do have a NOAH radio, so we knew of the tornado warning before Daddy called.
I grew up in MO. Whenever we heard the sirens, we got in the basement too. :)
I’m so glad everyone is okay and that your family has an emergency plan! I can relate to your ptsd with tornadoes.I’m like that with earthquakes . I’ll never forget the Loma Prieta earthquake in CA 1989. I slept with my shoes on for a long time after that😳
Oh my, I don't know how you kept filming. I would have been in tears. We hardly ever have tornados in South Carolina. I have only been in one tornado warning and it was headed right for us then disappeared right before it got to us. I guess the Lord was looking out for us that day. I am so glad everything is ok with your family.
I have lived in tornado country in TX, TN, and FL so yes it is a hard thing to deal with when that warning is heard. Glad you have a community siren - the last places I lived had no sirens at all just TV and Internet and Radio warnings. Thank goodness for those. In 2020 we had 9 warnings in one day in my small county and one on the ground just a few miles from our manufactured home. We have since moved West to a very low risk community.
You kneed to have a emergency bag you can pack with canned food, can opener, drinks water, snacks, first aid kit flash lights, weather radio, etc.
I’m so glad you are all OK! This should be a regular practice with your little girl so she is not so frightened, God for bid you do have a tornado. You should practice this at least once a month with her and show her exactly what to do, especially in the case if you aren’t next to her enable to put her in yourself. The fact that she said she’s never been in the storm shelter breaks my heart.
Glad you OK. Crazy weather this Spring. We have had the sirens go off at least one a week for the last 3 weeks here in North Texas. 3 weeks ago they had baseball sized hail on Ft Worth that broke out car windows. Luckily we have been spared at our house. Stay safe and glad you have the storm shelter.
My 3 yr old has PTSD from a tornado we experienced in Kentucky. We were staying in an RV park and the tornado came in through the town next town over but we experienced the hail and heavy winds that lifted our trailer off the ground. We ran to our 15 passenger van and hid under the seats for 2hrs while other campers were pushed into us with lightening, hail, winds, and heavy rain hit us.... Since moving back to SC she screams during lightening or rain or thunder 😫 we usually have hurricanes here in SC and I much rather prefer that which gives much warning days before

I am so glad the tornado did not come. That siren sound is horrid. I remember when I was a child we had the "war siren" tests I was so scared. How about buying a small portable TV just for that ocasions? Charlie face was so worried need lots of activity books in the shelter. I am happy you all safe. 💖💖💖💖💖💖
so glad you are safe.....glad to see you have a shelter
Man I feel for you guys. How scary that must be! I’m in the city in Michigan an we have had sirens go off when I was a kid. It was very very scared an will never forget having to stay in the hallway with pillows just my dad an I. We didn’t have a basement so the hallway was all we had. I’m so glad we don’t have tornados, earthquakes or hurricanes. I feel for everyone that has to go through weather like that.
Glad you are all safe. Storms terrify me.

Sweet sister..those sirens send me cruising too. Great job! S. Mississippi here. Plenty of twisters.
So happy you are all safe!
Maybe you could have the kids practice and like others have suggested have some supplies in the shelter. Colors, books, cards, water bottles, first aid, a Bible, flashlights etc all in one of those sealable totes. So if you need to go to the shelter you don't need to stop for anything. I am from Wisconsin and we get tornadoes a fair bit, the peace of mind a little preparation gives is worth it.
Nice tornado shelter all familys with kids should have them no question
I've got a friend in Jonesboro and a EF3🌪 hit in March of 2020. He sent me a couple videos of the 🔊wailing with the ominous clouds overhead!
For anyone wondering, the tornado coverage playing in the background is me! The page is called Arkansas Weather Watchers!
Our prayers to your family.
Where we lived in north Texas growing up was so prone to tornados we would have drills all the time at school. The town would do siren tests too. So I feel ya and now where I live in East Texas gets them too but we can't see them coming cuz we are surrounded by a million trees. Right when it's like march I try to keep a go bad ready with a change of clothes for my two little girls and snacks and water and flash lights and batteries. As I write this its literally starting to storm again too

We lived thus the April 27th tornadoes that wiped a lot of Alabama... every time I hear any noise my ptsd just goes thru the roof!!!!
they have NOAA weather radios that will tell you specifically where the storms are in real time and which counties need to take cover. In normal conditions they just repeat the forecast over and over.

Does your new place (Jess and Miahs) have a shelter ?
I live right next door to our fire dept and when the emergency/tornado siren goes off it is the worst feeling in the world.
Man, I wished we had phone service in our shelter. There is zero! Our family does the same thing to us too, texting and calling, letting us know what the weather is doing. :)
They used to set the sirens off every Saturday at noon here in NC
Oh poor Charlie! Sweet baby girl. When I was her age we went through a few tornados. It always scared me badly when we had to go underground. I'm glade you all are safe.
I grew up in Missouri; I know about tornadoes. I thank the Lord I never had a too close encounter. I saw one, but it was miles away. It's a marvel that's fascinating and terrifying at the same time. At home as a kid, we had a basement, but not a shelter. And as I said, we never had to test its effectiveness. Unfortunately, I have friends who lost almost everything and loved ones in the Joplin, MO strike some years ago. I don't know the statistics, but it's still relatively rare to get hit by one. But when it does, it can be devastating. No fault for taking shelter. I spent some years in California with the earthquakes. Basically, no warning there. In a sense, you learn that we're not the owners here, at best temporary caretakers (when we do it right.) Glad you all are safe.

I'm from Michigan and have been in your lovely state and was in a 7.2. earthquake. Scared the bejeebers out of me! But first I heard thunder, twice. Then it was rock n roll time. Years ago my brother built a gorgeous house out there. Yup! Right on top of the San Andreas fault. It WAS a nice house. I've been in or near 7 tornado touchdowns in my life. Two more to go and I figure I'll be out of luck!
How scary! Your girls are so brave. Glad it was a false alarm. 😳
Good job Charlee. GOOD BIG SISTER.
Tornado sirens are always creepy. I live in central taxes and we have no TV. We have two TV sets hahaha but we haven't had TV in so many years. What we do have is a NOAA radio and you could get a NOAA radio that is just news for the weather and for alarms and for updates on Amazon for about $29 to $35 that is definitely a good little prepping item to always keep especially if you don't have cable or regular TV like many of us who prefer to be in their Gardens LOL.... do you clean out your shelter and prepare it for just in case you have to stay in there more than just a few minutes to a few hours?? I've known people who had to actually stay the night in their shelter because I could not get out they had to wait. So I hope you all are well and I hope you all keep that in mind to situate your shelter with lanterns with batteries water snacks pillows throws of course in bags so that they stay clean from the dust chairs to sit down and of course the NOAA radio coloring books and crayons for the kids and maybe a small toy or two that they've never seen before that they can play with while the Terrible Weather passes by and it's less scary for them and less anxiety for you.... so do yourself a favor and get a NOAA radio!
