You can then turn out, and go to guns immediately, whilst he is trying to turn to stay out of your guns. Though if he goes vertical, you’ve no energy and can’t get your nose up, and end up a sitting duck! It’s all or nothing, losing energy.

I've had people accuse me of stolen valor as well as I'm ex-Army (Corp of Engineers) and I've never claimed to be anything else but a 51B (Carpentry and Masonry Specialist). So I always found it hilarious that someone would accuse a person of falsely claiming to be a glorified carpenter and ditch-digger. That being said, the rest of your post was fine.....just lay off on the stolen valor accusations. Used to see the RAF and USAF exercising all the time when I was out in the mountains, during the last Cold War. • @wigon

    @wigon

    3 жыл бұрын

    I agree. That description was absolute awesomeness. But it also demonstrated some of the over-confidence of the USAF pilots. Against Russian or Chinese SU-30 pilots that swaggerness would disappear REAL quick. The only plane in the USAF inventory capable of dealing with high angle of attack opponents is the F-22 and maybe the F-16. I'm still in disbelief that the DoD didn't cancel the F-35 project as it doesn't stand a chance in the merge against advanced Russian fighters with radars modes that can be specifically tuned to detect stealth fighters. Their IR detection systems coupled with off-boresight helmet mounted targeting systems alone make them F-35 killers. The Russians have also poured heavy investment into upgrading their old Mig-31 foxhounds which covers their long range capability. In contrast, the U.S. military totally stopped the development of their long range air to air missiles while the Russians invested heavily in that technology. Now the tables have turned. At one time the Soviet Union was all about quantity over quality. Now the U.S. military and NATO is all about quantity over quality while Russia has shifted to quality over quantity out of necessity as nations along their borders join NATO. We literally have them surrounded and constantly try to cut off their oil and natural gas routes to Europe. It's just stupid. If Russia did that to America or sent troops to Mexico (as we have troops in Ukraine) we would have already declared war on them.

    @@wigon If you think you are going to “kill” an F-35 by just outmaneuvering it, you’re going to be disappointed. It’s like bragging you’re the best knife fighter when you’re going up against a guy with a gun. People keep forgetting that the F-35 has advanced sensors of its own. The pilot can literally see through the plane. Not saying the F-35 is invincible, but the people who keep trying to put it down always seem to ignore its full range of capabilities.

  • @wigon

    @wigon

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@Shadowfax-1980 In BVR combat, you'd be correct, but notice I said "in the merge". Plain and simple, the F-35 is not a high-angle of attack aircraft. It doesn't matter how many sensors it has. Unless the short-range missiles it carries are capable of extreme off-boresight, high-G maneuverability, it will get shot to pieces by any of the latest Sukhoi fighters. It's strength is not in dog-fighting but in BVR combat where it is also difficult to detect on radar. Against Russian and Chinese stealth fighters however, it will likely boil down to short-range engagements. It's why I've always contended that the F-35 was a gigantic waste of money.

  • @wigon

    @wigon

    @@ethanroberts4672 Sadly, if we started to lose against Russia or China in a conventional war, we'd likely resort to nuclear weapons and vice-versa. It's why we need to hope that our politicians are not stupid enough to get us involved in any military conflict with Russia and China unless we develop treaties that state that we will NOT use nuclear weapons on each other unless our countries are directly invaded.

    Wow that was incredible, Roy tells it like it is; packed full of authenticity and experience. What separates and elevates the RAF pilots is not just training, it's freedom to think thier way through situations and apply the guile to turn defecit into parity or even advantage. The Tornado was designed as a multirole combat aircraft and configured as an F3 was an air defence fighter, never as a singular purposed fighter, where as the US fighters were mostly air superiority aircraft. Its testament to both the airframe and the pilots that it did so well in exercises against the US compliment of fighters, it was never going to be able to compete with a small agile fighter like the F18 in visual range but boy it out performed its design brief big time in the hands of people like Roy and that's comforting.

    Commander Sharkey Ward was totally under appreciated during the Falklands War. He turned the Sea Harrier and NAS 801 into the success story of the decade. Even his comrades in NAS 800 had no clue how to do night ops from a carrier or fly an effective CAP...although pilots weren’t given much of a choice of altitudes to start that CAP. Their superiors were not listening to Sharkey and were not thinking.

    They needed the money for more Typhoons I think. Plus the F3 was very expensive maint wise. Was a shame it took so long to become the potent intercepter it was meant to be from the off.

    Wow.. fascinating listening to this true officer and a gentleman. The F3 was my dream plane growing up in the 80s. I went through Biggin Hill for the university scholarship program and we had to memorize and recite alsorts of stats on the different tornados and his terminology brought back a lot of those long forgotten stats.

    The F2 was a POS. The F3 served its purpose - an interceptor with effective weapons systems on a relatively economical platform. It's obviously no F15 or F16 but it was no POS either.

  • @wigon

    @wigon

    @@CH-pv2rz The fighter-bomber variants of the Tornado were definitely not a POS. They excelled at low-altitude penetration of enemy territory. Many were shot down during the first Gulf War (mostly by AAA guns) doing anti-runway missions (often during daylight), but they later rectified this weakness by developing stand-off submunition dispensers. Granted it is an old design that needed to be replaced but it was far from being a POS fighter. The old RAF Jaguar was in comparison a much crappier fighter-bomber. Sadly the older Buccaneer was a superb fighter-bomber with excellent low-level flying capability and probably should have been upgraded and kept on. But I think today, the UK's goal is for a true multi-role fighter-bomber that does everything well. That makes sense given the UK's tight military budget requirements. I'm honestly surprised that they bought the F-35 as the Eurofighter is excellent. But I expect them to use the F-35 more as an interceptor and not as a dogfighter. The F-35 will also serve well against 3rd world countries with antiquated radar systems.

    I know the F-15 and F-16 are both excellent aircraft, and I know they have their strengths and weaknesses, but I never thought I'd hear somone say, in essence, they'd rather be up against F-15s than F-16s. And, thanks to this video, I finally get the difference between an "air to air fighter" and an "air superiority fighter", thanks for posting such a great video.
