The album version of "Hey Jupiter" is simpler with piano but without the kinda electronic elements the Dakota Version brings. Both are great, but the Dakota Version is definitely my favorite. Tori's vocalizing is like cry-singing... stunningly beautiful. I would recommend having a listen to the full length Dakota Version as what we hear in this video edits some of the beauty of the song.

This is the first Tori song I heard, probably around 2 or 3 am on VH1 and I was absolutely mesmerized by the video. The cooing stuck in my head and I bought the album months later just to hear this song. I was so confused that the song on the album was so different--just Tori and the piano and no backing vocals, no drum loop. It took months for me to get over the difference but it's the first Tori song I fell in love it and the album Boys for Pele broke my mind open in a way I had never experienced before. I think the Dakota version was remixed specifically for release as a single because Boys for Pele doesn't have a lot of radio-friendly songs. I love this version and I love the album version. The song is obviously about a breakup and I think it can be interpreted as a literal breakup between Tori and someone for whom she uses Jupiter as a pseudonym, and I think it also could be interpreted as an account of someone having a crisis of faith. Jupiter is the "Thunder God" or the "Sky Father," synonymous with Zeus and analogous with the Judeo-Christian God. They're more or less interchangeable supreme deities. Tori has referred to the Thunder God in recent years on the album Night of Hunters and Native Invader. On Native Invader, the song Battle of Trees is a narrative about ancient pagan Irish people losing their battle for their faith to the Thunder God, who invaded Ireland and destroyed the people's worldview. Tori always conflates the Judeo-Christian God and I think the Thunder God with the patriarchy. I think both Hey Jupiter and Night of Hunters (and potentially some of her other breakup and relationship songs) are accounts of her relationship with her hardcore Christian upbringing. She grew up with conflicting feelings about her Methodist upbringing and negative feelings about the patriarchy of the Christian church, and with an interest in pagan spirituality, and I think this song in part may represent the heartbreak of confronting her incompatibility with the Thunder God. The reading above probably sounds far-fetched to most people, but if you accept that she is in fact singing to Jupiter himself--the supreme deity--and not using a metaphorical pseudonym, then it kind of makes this read a no-brainer. She was in an abusive relationship with God, who neglected and abandoned her, who didn't answer the phone when she called, and she did everything she could to attract his attention, his compassion, and his love, and she finally had to come to terms with the reality that he was totally absent from her life. Yet in the end, she's still asking questions of him--the relationship isn't really resolved even though she's decided it's time to break up. In the end of the song, she sings, "So are you sane, now we're through?" and in her song God, she sings "Tell me you're crazy maybe then I'll understand." Sooo yeah, pretty sure this song is a direct address to God.

Her Kevyn Aucoin make-up is so damn gorgeous in this video. He always made her look amazing (she's featured at least twice in one of his books).

Did this video inspire the 'This is fine' meme? Love the Jupiter metaphor: someone who exerts great pull over us, but who is impossible to reach or get close to... Jupiter is the reason Earth persists; its gravitational pull is so intense that it shields us from asteroids, etc.

Please listen to the full-length version of this song (on your own time, you wouldn't need to react to it, for sure). The ending gets super shortened in the music video version. And please also listen to the original album version. Both versions are amazing

The scenes where the little girl is leading her by the hand let me think of 1thing : Let the innocent inner child in us lead us sometimes. Don't loose that inner child on the difficult adult journey.

Thats a great insight! Also love that. Led the inner child lead at times instead of the sceptical adult.

The song is a bit longer ... the video cut it off ... ( singing under the chorus of ooos at the end ) " I go from day to day I know where the cupboards are I know where the car is parked I know he isn't you ... Never you Nothing's been the same Nothing Nothing, nothing's gonna save us Never you "

The vocalization is echoes of Purple Rain. Tori created a romance between Jupiter and Earth in the song, but it’s layered with a bunch of stuff as always with her.

Yes , I read Tori admitted she was inspired by that melody progression of the end of ' purple rain ' but she made it her own ... All these years I'd never ' connected the dots ' until I read that ...

Hey there. Welcome back. Interesting version, still, the live one is more powerful because she uses so many inflections and whimsical twists, to say nothing of her performance in the flesh with all that is Tori Amos. Hope you give that live version a shot, too.

This is interesting. I have heard this version of the song before not bad but I guess I prefer the album version. It’s a bit more emotional.

NGL, I prefer the original version, the quietness of it conveys the emotional center of this song for me. The Dakota version is cool, but not my preference.
