Topping up my working prepper pantry & non-food preps - Aldi / B&M Preps - Beginner Prepper UK

Took a trip to Aldi and B&M this week to top up the food (and non-food) preps. Could probably benefit from buying things little and often but end up spotting gaps and then decide to fill them.
A little reminder to preppers to look after your physical health in peace times (incl. dental hygiene).

Cool haul! One thing I found that helps me maintain our pantry is to "copy-can!" I will pick up obvious things that I always use and just add them. By doing this, when I go and get my weeks and months' shopping, rotating when I get back, I will pick up those things that I tend to forget.

Heres a simple rotation plan for your pantry. Buy a set of different coloured perminant markers. Choose your first colour for, say 2025 or 2026 and put a simple cros on the barcode. Next year, choose a different colour for 2027... and so on. You will see at a glance where you are, how much of that product you actually used, and whether to keep buying it. You will also see what needs to be eaten sooner. If you can only find four colours, red, blue, green and black, you somply put a double cross for that year! when you have run out of marker pen, let me know 😂 Cheers 🇬🇧

Have you a list of each season's sales? I try to stock up nonperishables when they are on sale. Long ago I read a book that had a very strange but ultimately valid suggestion. That was to wipe down the shower or tub immediately after you're done, it helps reduce build up. I use a rag made from an old towel, cut in quarters and hemmed with a zigzag stitch, that had developed holes.

Sadly, we don’t get the sort of seasonal sales that you get in the US. At most the stores might knock 50p or something off the usual (often exhorbitant) price of a bottle of cleaner, in time for “Spring cleaning season”. Same with our food - no such thing as a case sale over here, you just have to grab what’s on offer whenever you think it’s worth having.

I did a shop at Aldi yesterday . £7.29 for 1l of olive oil. 24 rolls of premium loo roll £4.99 which is still very good. Their premium washing up liquid is rated highly in which magazine. Frozen veg and fruit also very good value and quality

Dentists - around near me, they are like hens teeth, NHS ones are non existent 😞 Well done on doing the tin's, it is a good prep, but a real pain to do 🙂 On the medical front, did you see Munky Wrench on Mikes channel ? He recommends keeping extra meds for barter items, especially pain killers, diarrhoea and anti histamines as they will be in high demand in a SHTF shortage. Those meatballs are good with rice as a cheap, easy, filling meal

It's frustrating about the lack of dentists here. I've not seen it yet (Mike publishes more videos than I can keep up with haha) but will add it to my To Watch Later list. I don't like to have too much of anything in that have short best-before dates. Got plenty of alcohol (that I rarely drink) as back-up barter items though. Good shout on the rice with meatballs! 👍

@@StrivingforSelfSufficiency Kelly (Munky Wrench) pointed out that if you had a sick family member, then medical items will soon become better than gold dust. The problem with alcohol, is that is people know you have it could make you a target, but no one is going to target you for a packet of diarrhoea tablets 🙂 My first thought was also miniature spirits as trades, but have now changed to the medical route. Medicines will still work after their BBF dates, they just might not be as potent. With the rice thing, if you cache some microwave rice packs, they are precooked, so if you add the meatballs to one of them, it is just a case of warming it up, rather than actually having to cook the rice first, so saving fuel. When are you looking to get chickens ?

That washing up liquid from Aldi is rubbish in my opinion, it's too watered down. I love vaseline as well, but find O'Keefe's Working Hands cream great on the go. It's pricey, but worth it. For a cheaper alternative Aldi's Intensive Repair cream is very good too. I have time wash my hands a lot at work and those two are my go to, keeping the skin on my hands in good shape. When it comes to the sensitive skin making my own soap made a big change. It is much gentler on the skin and didn't leave the residue, unlike the commercial detergents sold as soaps. Btw, have you considered tallow as your cooking fat? I switched from liquid oils to tallow and am loving it. I get the fat free from my butcher and render it myself. I only use olive oil for pancakes now, and seed oils only for soap making.

@@theclumsyprepper ha, we keep the Aldi washing up liquid for the utility room for one-off bits (like washing the dog’s bowl). Thanks for the hand cream recommendation! Good suggestion on tallow - I see a lot of American accounts mention this for cooking and even lotions etc but not tried myself. Does a little go a long way?

@@StrivingforSelfSufficiency It does. I store mine in sealed jars on my pantry shelf. It lasts ages, providing the jars were thoroughly cleaned. I also find that, now that I use it km cooking, I'm not hungry shortly after my meal - like I was when I used olive oil or seed oils. Plus it gives a nice flavour to food, especially eggs and veggies. My butcher gives me his scraps and bones for my dogs and foxes, so there's usually quite a bit of fat there - all for free. The best fat, if you decide to try it, is the one from around cow's kidneys. That's proper suet, nice and crumbly and it renders well. I have jars of it in the pantry already, plus more in the freezer that I need to process. I even clarified some for soap making, but haven't got round to it yet. I plan to make another thirty bars, or so, because I find it that the longer I leave my bars to cure, the longer they last. It takes a good year in my wet climate (west coast of Ireland) for them to cure to my liking.

Hi Eimear! Do you have a place for me or others to contact you? I have a new friend that I offered some hatching eggs to, that has instead put your name down as a candidate! The eggs can come via a close by post office, and you can be getting fresh eggs in the future. Its all free, this is to spread the love so to speak. I understand you need good eggs? Let me know if you are up for a few free hens. ❤

I've given hatching eggs to others before now, and in return I now have three full grown turkeys and about 6 turkey chicks. All I ask of you is to win your next endeavour if you can 😊
