    If you start with the donut and then form it into a mug as shown you will get the strongest possible handle with almost no chance of breaking off since the handle becomes monolithically attached as opposed to being ‘stuck on’ partway through the process. If you don't know what topology is, then don't complain about it. The reason topologists "can't" tell the difference between a mug and a doughnut is because they both have one hole. Do some research before you decide to bash on people because you don't know what they're talking about.

    I've used topological concepts in Geographic Information Systems. Geography software needs to use topology to be able to virtually render different types of real world geographical scenarios dealing with the relationships between various shapes. E.g., is this polygon something that has a physical barrier shared with others but can only occupy its own space like a lake, or is it something that can be superimposed over other polygons like political boundaries, school district zoning, service provider zoning, etc, or even if it's something that is intangible in the real world but gives information about the way networks work, like distinguishing an overpass from the street beneath it when you're using network analysis, which use lines and points in space without depicting the real distances, only relationships of features. Software like Google Maps uses a lot of these concepts to not only accurately depict a map but to give you real-time traffic information and driving directions using shortest route, etc.

    "n-manifold" usually refers to the dimension of the manifold, not the genus (i.e. how many holes). It's an interesting question what the genus of a human is, but I think it's not very well defined. Do pores count?

  • @s6th795

    @s6th795

    Henry Segerman Yeah, I meant genus, not manifold. I was totally wrong there. Thanks for the correction. Yeah, I'm not sure whether pores would count or not, I was mainly counting orifices. I don't think pores connect to each other though, so it wouldn't increase the genus.

    A corollary of the joke is that a topologist drinks their coffee with a doughnut. Someone needs to print a doughnut in the shape of a coffee mug and see how it holds coffee. Is there a 3D printer that prints doughnuts?

  • @henryseg

    Surely someone is working on it if not. The dough might be the tricky bit - getting it to keep its shape between extruding and baking. I am quite certain that there is no hybrid variable-ratio ceramic/dough printer.
