You are correct about Azula telling the truth about Zuko's Dad wanting to kill Zuko. For some reason most reactors always get confused with that part and Zuko's mom disappearing.

Yeah, there's a line in there about the old fire lord saying Ozai should experience the same loss as Iroh for suggesting that he should get to skip the succession order. So it wasn't so much that Ozai wanted to kill Zuko, he was just going to be forced to.

Fun fact: Zuko Alone is the only episode out all 61 that Aang doesn't appear in.

Fun Fact: 'The Boulder' is based on Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. Also, the 'Made in Earth Kingdom' joke was a reference to how everything is made in China. As the Earth Kingdom is mostly based off China. Also, Azula is a literal pyschopath, so she's always been like that.

14:20 She isn't using hearing as much as you think to see, she feels the vibrations of whats going on around her to inform her of what is nearby. She can feel the vibrations of a person's heartbeat even if they are standing still through the ground via earthbending. It is oftentimes referred to as Seismic Sense. You see what she sees when everything goes black and white and we see those vibrational waves or sound waves moving through the floor to sort of identify things, like her fight against the Boulder at the start of the episode

Zuko alone is an absolute masterpiece of an episode

Note the comparison In the representation. From young Zuko who couldn’t preform. To now with powers gained by his own way. If his grandfather saw this performance fight with the earth army thugs his father would more than smile at the raw potential and power displayed

When Toph joins the group at the end and say that her Father changed his mind and is allowing her to travel the world, notice how Sokka say "We should leave before he changes his mind again", he knew she was lying and just ran away. But he did her the courtesy of not calling her out.

About Azula: sinze she's a prodigy, her father seems to be really fixated on her. I think it's more than likely that he's been working hard to influence her, rewarding being calculating and punishing "weakness" since she was very young.

@@Meghancita512 Correct. Ursa and Ozai devised a plan to slip poison into his tea in order to kill him. Ursa made it but Ozai delivered it allowing Zuko to live, and letting Ozai become Fire Lord. Also Ursa was banished from the Fire Nation.

This is heavy comic book spoilers about what Zuko and Azula’s mom did, but what happened was: After Zuko embarrassing display, I think Ozai really was going to kill Zuko, or punish him really bad. Ursa pleaded for Ozai not to do anything to Zuko, so he promised to spare Zuko if she did one thing which was kill his own father (the Fire Lord) so he could succeed the thrown. Ursa poisoned Azulon’s drink and that’s all I’ll say. The rest will be a mystery.

When it comes to parents giving different kinds of encouragement there has to be a balance, Zuko's father is extremely harsh and impatient and so his mother needs to be more empathetic in order to help reinforce his self esteem. Children have very fragile mentalities and can develop a lot of really bad habits and internalized resentment if they are not raised properly.

You know I think the difference between Azula and Zuko's Personality comes more from nurture than nature, Zuko had his Mother and Iroh to correct him (turtle ducks for example) but Azula had her Father and nobody else, While Zuko's experience with his Mom shown in the flashback is Positive, Azula's experience was Neutral or Negative, Take the Fire bending scene for example when Zuko was fire bending the Dad didn't say anything while Mom praised him, when Azula was fire bending the Dad smiled while Mom didn't say anything, I think it's obvious who she'd like more seeing her Mother praise Zuko but doesn't say anything to her.

I disagree with this opinion slightly. Some people think Azula is entirely bad because of outside reasons (her dad, her mom etc) but she still has free will just like everybody else. Yes she’s raised poorly but her mom still tried (getting Zuko to play with her, having motherly talks). She is still solely responsible for her own actions and isn’t a sob story

@@YT_AKai_ Well she's got some responsability, but she's still very young, and Yes most of her behaviour come from her dad, She like Zuko she's deprived of love and crave for attention (he may smile but his children are merely tool of power), she compete with Zuko to get attention. Renamed Omashu after her father.

@@YT_AKai_ SPOILER SHe very much so doubted her mother loved her, has evidently showcased by later episodes, She think her mother sees her as a monster and she wish to be love by her, but she doesn't trust this emotion like we see in the final episodes. Also the way you phrase what she does to please her father as "a choice" is bit more complicated . We do have choices towards or emotions, but it's not always a conscious one.

She is by no means a victim- additionally if she didn’t want to please her father and go after Zuko, Iroh and Aang she could’ve just ran away in season two. She went after them and that’s her choice. You don't have to believe everything the characters say, Don 🤣. Fire Nation Man was just playing a role and Toph lied about his father changing his mind. That's why Sokka made the joke of them getting away quickly before he "changed" his mind again.

14:20 She could see the rocks being thrown at her because she "felt" the earth/rock in the air. The bending in avatar come from feeling the earth,fire,water,air.

Azula's flame is SO HOT that it's blue. When you turn on the stovetop the flame spark is blue and then it becomes red.

Dw you're not the only one who forgets she's blind sometimes since people in the show do that sometimes too, it's hard to remember sometimes because when she takes down like a bunch of people like all those earth benders it makes her seem so capable and like invincible and then you remember that oh right she can't do a lot of things because no sight.

Love this episode :) Toph is as powerful as she is almost strictly BECAUSE she’s blind, having that ability to see through solid objects is broken af

And introducing the goat Toph the blind bandit!! Fun fact they wanted to get the Rock to actually voice The Boulder lol. Also it was one of Toph's original character designs, as they had a much different image in mind for Aang's earthbending teacher. That is until one of the creators had the strike of genius to change the design into the character we know and love today! Our witty badass blind queen!

So the Fire Nation (as we’ve seen in some episodes in season 1) has been taking over or in other words colonizing villages and cities in the Earth Kingdom. The war is a century old, so some of the first colonies have a very mixed heritage of Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom families. This is more apparent in the comics that take place after the main show, but there are definitely families of this sort of mixed descent that are actually considered Fire Nation citizens even though they’re Earthbenders.

But if you’ve read the comics you’d know that there are other Earthbenders that are loyal to the Fire Nation and consider themselves Fire Nation citizens. That means wearing the Fire Nation insignia and reciting the pledge would be normal for them.

@@RiseeRee I said you're right about the comics but this guy hardly has anything to do with it. For starters, he's clearly not loyal to the Fire Nation, only to Xin Fu, who pays him, and who's an Earth National. Also, that was no recital of any pledge. That song was a clear mockery, made up by him or another what the intention to laugh at the Fire Nation. He was just putting an act for money and is an enemy of the Fire Nation if anything (although it looks like he's more into easy money than fighting any war).

Azula might be my favorite character. But Toph is in many ways the best. Once she joins, things really take off, Her name is Toph...because it rhymes with tough! (not really a spoiler even though it is a quote from a much later episode). There are really three "alone" episodes in the franchise. "Zuko Alone," one that is essentially "Appa alone" though not named that, and "Korra Alone." They are all stellar. And people often miss how ruthless Zuko's mother is. In some ways she out does Ozai in ruthlessness. It is made more explicit in a later episode, but it is reasonably clear here. She orchestrated the coup, but she did it to save her son, not out of ambition.

Ooh also Toph’s style is not like other Earthbending we see (Hung Gar) she actually uses Mantis. This is supposed to have been invented by a blind woman.

You've seen ba sing SE sort of, when they were looking for toph, The way she sees is mostly by "seismic sense" ( sensing any type of vibrations on the ground ) and obviously being blind her hearing is also enhanced, she uses both but seismic is the main one

I personally don't think Azulon would genuinely demand Zuko's death. If it did happen, it was likely a test to see how much of a snake Ozai truly was. If he agreed to do it, then Azulon would know for sure his character, and would ensure under no circumstances does Ozai inherit. Naturally, this gets distorted by Azula, who said in the episode that she thought her father would make a better Fire Lord than Iroh.

Yes you are right she killed firelord azulon so that ozai wouldn't kill zoku because azlua was telling the truth about azulon ordering ozai to kill his own son as punishment for trying to usurp his brother iroh's rightful claim to the Throne. She was later banished because ozai feared the possibility of his Ursa doing the same thing to him later on in the future. But she couldn't take zoku because her disappearing is along with one of the kids shortly after the death of azulon would have gone noticed.

Don’t know if you’ve watched Star Wars but Firelord Ozai is voiced by Mark Hamil who played Luke in those movies and he also did the voice of the Joker in the 1990s Batman cartoon.

This episode in kind of unintentionally implies that firelord Sozin (the one that started the war) lived a ridiculously long time. Another episode has an offhand line which says that Sozin was born relatively close to around when Avatar Roku was born, and based on how Roku looks when we see him he must have been around his fifties at least when he died, likely 60s. to be generous, ill assume Roku just looks old and was only 50 when he died. then there's 12 years between Aang being born and the start of the war (and that's assuming the new avatar is born basically right after the last one dies), putting Sozin near 62 at the start. This episode states Azulon was firelord for 23 years, and we know the war had been going 100 years by the time Aang woke up. im not sure how old zuko is in this episodes flashbacks, but hes a few years younger than the season 1 flashbacks (where he was 13) at least. again, to be as fair as i can, lets say he was 10. so 100 minus the years Sozin wasn't firelord is 100 - 23 - 10 = 67 so that puts Sozins age at around 129 years old when he died. And that's me being very generous, since IMO Roku looks at least mid 60s to me putting Sozins age at least around his 140s when he died, and there are a few things here that could add extra time (time between Roku death and Aang birth for example).

@@ABHyt no, that was a retcon they introduced later once they realised they messed up and had Sozin live for a ridiculously long time. Originally though, all the Information we had pointed squarely at Sozin living to be 130-140 at least.

We think she only ran away. There is some lore on this if you want to check it out. I would give the link but KZread keeps removing my comments when any link is added, even if it is from KZread... They been fucking with me since when they got exposed for allowing illegal content to be uploaded onto KZread's platform.

The "Russian" fire nation guy is a joke about old school tv wrestling. One of the made up characters is the role "antagonist" they play the bad guy and they get beat up. During the red scare more often then not the "antagonist" role was a stereotype Russian person, so its just playing into that.

Toph can see things in the air via prediction. When a rock is thrown at a certain speed, it hits a certain point at a certain time. Toph feels the initial throw, then predicts the trajectory. This is why Aang beat her. When Aang jumped, he didn’t connect to the ground immediately, making Toph’s predictions unreliable. “Looks like somebody’s a little light on his feet, what’s your fighting name, the fancy dancer?” She’s being thrown off that the Avatar doesn’t return to the ground as she predicted.

Also, all benders can feel their element without seeing it. So Toph can feel the Earth even if it's in the air.

Even with a premiere bender like Toph, she was caught at least twice by the Dai Li's earth gloves (during the Earth King's party for Basco and when Jet had to save her in Lake Laogai). Sensing the element is a skill, varying among benders. Some can use it to scan their periphery (Toph's seismic sense, Amon's sensing of Korra while hiding...even non-benders like Ty Lee uses auras, which is basically just emitted heat or energy from the body, to sense moods and pressure points) or some can only bend their elements when in front of them.

@@OrdinaryCritic Just because she was caught by the Dai Li's earth gloves doesn't mean she couldn't feel they were there. Zuko also got caught by them even though he could see them. Why didn't he dodge? There are far more instances of Toph hitting, dodging, or bending earth that's in the air than there is of Toph being caught unaware of earth that's in the air.
