    after so many so called "reviews" on internet, where nothing is really said, other than "if you prefer this, this is better and if you prefer that, that is better", FINALLY a true review that makes direct comparison and conclusion. Downloading those tools are not trivial - due to size. And time to evaluate properly. THANK you, to save my time!

    I bought Photo AI. While I am pleased that face recovery is, it's in my experience nowhere near their marketing claims, it's still a very useful tool and can be quite amazing. I am working on restoration of ~ 100 year 120 negs that my father shot. My process? Photographing the negs on a good LED Lightbox with a GH5 ii. I use this for my own 35 mm and 16 mm movie film (stills only) both reversal and neg. Anyway the thing is it can't match the rest of the image to the face processing so if you use it to its full potential the photo will look obviously unnatural. I always copy the layer that is processed and end up with a blend old and new. So while I am happy to have the tool I want more, much more. But I am doing this now. In a few years and after inevitable improvement, I may revisit some the images.

    Thank you. Very good comparison. This backs up my experience with those apps as well. Hoenstly, I'm not using Photo AI yet. I much prefer heading straight to quality apps (Denoise AI, Sharpen AI and Gigapixel AI) as they give me better quality output. Less convenient than Photo AI? Hell, yeah. But the output is what counts for me. I'm checking out each release of Photo AI and it still cannot replace individual Topaz products. Again, my personal view on it.

    Good to hear you also found the same thing... I found it all a bit confusing recently as several people were saying Photo AI was a good bit better. When I tried this both apps were fully up to date on this review and as you have also found out Photo AI just couldn't live up to Gigapixel AI on its own. Maybe in the next version or two they might get it right, fingers crossed.

I honestly haven't had time just yet but it is seriously on my to do list which AI will get to next week. I have two commercial shoots this week and a good bit of editing to do and several new bits of software have landed on my desk in the last few days so I think I need three of me atm to get through it all :-) I will get to it though, I plan to do a group test with SuperSharp AI, Tack Sharp AI and Sharpening AI and see which one comes out on top with a few different photos. Also SuperSharp AI for windows was missing Defocus and Universal sharpening adjustments when it launched. They were available for Mac though.

    Photo AI also reduces noise and sharpens the image if you want it too, so if it's only for resizing then Gigapixel AI does a really good job and Photo AI is no better it there. The Image Quality bundle includes Gigapixel AI, Sharpen AI, Denoise AI and you also get Photo AI in it too if you want to go down that route 👍

    🧙🏻‍♂ I've found if you use DeNoise & Gigapixel together, some textures look weird & over-sharpened. It's best to do two upscales, one with DeNoise & one with no DeNoise, then mask/blend the two where it looks best. Does Photo AI get rid of that problem?

  • @kieranhayesphotography

    @kieranhayesphotography

    Жыл бұрын

    Have you tried using DeNoise AI first then Sharpen AI if needed and finishing with Gigapixel AI? If using DeNoise AI first you could use masking to reduce the DeNoise AI effect on the background. I have found Photo AI to give some very cartoonist results at times especially with very low resolution files and a second app like DeNoise being used as well. That could just be me though. It's great though if it's a very simple job.

    I use both regularly depending on the task at hand; along with DeNoise and Sharpen AI. In most cases, if I am not trying to be extremely extreme? Photo AI will suffice. But when it comes to a large upscaling - I am talking say a 36 x 36 inch, 16 bit, one to one scan of a painting at 300 DPI to 48 x 48 inches? I find I must resort to Gigapixel as Photo AI - with my older computer being probably the reason - crashes after getting almost there but not quite! Plus, Photo AI smooths things out to the point of looking plastic. I also must use an older version of Gigapixel - 6.2.0 from 2021- which with my computer uses the CPU and GPU more efficiently, whereas the later versions always crashed for me. They barely use the GPU as indicated by Task Manager. I realize few people do this kind of upsizing. Basically, it takes testing to see what yields what is best for my (or your) purposes - as I am sure most people find with any of the many - truly amazing - programs we have out there now for our use. It's not a "one size fits all" thing. Thank you for this thorough analysis.

    Hi Erik, Yes, that's exactly it. You need to play with the settings a bit to get it as good as possible and while Photo AI is an amazing all round app it does have its slight drawbacks. I always end out going back to the individual apps but I know I am a bit extreme that way 😀. Thanks for watching and for the feedback and have a fantastic weekend.

    @@kieranhayesphotography I am sure that as time goes by - considering how much effort they have obviously been putting into Photo AI since its inception the goal is to make it equal to the three standalone products DeNoise, Sharpen and Gigapixel, which I would aim for too if I were them; given most people I suppose don't want to be bothered with fine-tuning an image. But, what's that old saying, "Jack of all trades but master of none."? Yet, for most ordinary processing where we are not trying to meet the types of criteria I would rise to the occasion to meet - if I were having someone like yourself reviewing my handiwork! - such time and attention to detail is not necessary. Have wonderful weekend!

I also have DXO Labs Photolabs 6 and On1 PhotoRaw 2023 on my workstation so at the best of times I am torn between them all :-) Each of them have their own advantages but Neo is right up there with the best of them now and it just keeps getting better with loads of new stuff on the way for 2023 that I can't talk about as of yet :-)

    wow, this surprised me.. for context, i have used gigapixel 4.1 before.thats what i used, thats what i know and i came here having bias on gigapixel. also, all most comments seems to be in favor of gigapixel, including @kieran himself. but it surprised me, though gigapixel has the "sharper" results, photo for me has the more realistically upscaled results. for another context, i have used some AI image generators so i am acustomed to their results. gigapixel do look like an image from an AI image generator. yes, its sharper, but it comes off as a little more fake looking. and while photo is softer(hence less details etc) it comes more to me like a real photograph upscaled and restored. i can see why more pixel-peeper users say gigapixel is better. but i could also see why others say that photo is fine and useable. so it really boils down to personal preference and where you would use it i guess... for me its still is a toss coin.. that bridge between photo and lightroom though sounds sweet....

    Hi Vince, I can see your viewpoint but this is only about enlarging your photographs so for people with old mobile phone shots of loved ones or moments past or drone shots or the time you have the wrong lens on your camera and something magical happens off in the distance. I personally don't use these apps for upscaling my own photography but I do use them reasonably often for restoring old photographs for clients and for mobile phone shots and for some old 12mp slightly cropped drone shots. There are exclusion zones around lighthouses so you often times can't get that close to them with a drone so a bit of upscaling would come in handy there then too. I totally agree with you though that you should always get it right in camera, have a great weekend.

    Vince; I've been a flat-out pro photographer for 36 years and I wouldn't be without these apps. I get 95% of my pix across a range of disciplines (and often in difficult circumstances) bang on, but if there's a good one or an important one amongst the 5% that I can save or pull back from unusable to usable then I'm going to have no hesitation doing just that. It's not a 'fake image' at all it's an improvement/enhancement in just the same way that any photoshop (etc) edit is an improvement/enhancement to achieve a better final result. And with pro work, there is no 'next time.'

Sorry you can argue it all you like but I've seen it, it's never the same. So I appreciate you supporting it, but it's bad for photography. @@VinceMaidens You’re making the VERY self-centered assumption that these programs are only used to fix crappy photography. There are plenty of ways to generate images that aren’t a camera, you know. When you’ve done a digital painting as big as it’ll ever need to be on a monitor, and then it suddenly needs to be professionally printed, you’ll be happy to have them. When you’ve done a texture for a 3D model years ago and now it needs updated to a modern resolution, you’ll be happy to have them. I know you’re invested in being a snob about this, but really, there are endless applications for these programs that aren’t even related to photography, let alone limited to fixing incompetence.
