I had the Advent Large Utility speaker in 1975. I ran it with an Harmon Kardon HK 300? My first ever “mod” was taking a piezo electric tweeter & cross over from the Dahlquist DQ-10 & set it on top on a L bracket. Loved the sizzle. My buddy had the Heresy’s & a small Marantz receiver…I always loved his college system. Of course my other buddy had Crown amp/preamp and JBL L 100s…that was the bad ass system at Clemson in the mid 70s in Johnstone Hall.

Great video. I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on the Klipsch Heresy and Frazier Concerto compare with each other. I'm a long time Klipsch fan and recently recapped my Heresy Is, which made a difference. @@stereoniche yessir, I'll be watchin, I know everyone wants to see the famous dq-10, but the catch there is the dq-10 was not the best of the group, Carl Marchisotto didn't design that model, he designed the 8,12,20 models and used poly caps from the factory, no corners cut, think in terms of top tier separation, tonality and imaging, just a perfect all arounder. Also don't sleep on the Snell type e, or any Snell really, phenomenal. Some good German brands would be great as well, missions, celestions, ls3/5a, etc. Keep up the good work partner.

One thing that's missing from your critique that I think is very important in music reproduction is dynamics. I realize there are lots of parameters you could use and you can't include all of them, but the dynamic range without compressing the peaks, whether due to efficiency or just response, is something that live music simply doesn't suffer from and is a very tell tale sign that what you are listening to isn't real. Cool to have someone still looking at vintage stuff though. There was some great products that simply weren't in the audiophile realm but too expensive for the typical consumer and faded away. Many can now be had at bargain prices if people have an idea of what to get.

Thanks Michael. For bookshelf speakers, are you wanting a "bookshelf" from the same era as the Fisher? If so, that is on par with the size of the Advent. KLH, AR, etc. are good ones to consider. The AR4 is a smaller model from that era as well, but it will depend on your listening preferences as they can be a little laid back.

The Heresey uses the same tweeter as my homebuilt khorns. It really needs a paraeq to tame the top end. Mated to a Yamaha receiver that can accomplish that works wonders. It tames the 8khz bump and increases the 16k output.

Unless the craftsmanship and parts are bad and there isn't a glaring fault present, all of these brands and models are good speakers. A hell of a lot of people like Klipsch and many people do not. I still regret selling my SDA CRS+ speakers with original stands. I posted a turntable on CL and someone reached out and wanted to buy the turntable and my Polks that were in the background of the pictures, I said they weren't for sale and he replied name your price and foolishly I did and he responded affirmatively. I expected him to back out of the deal but he showed up with cash in hand. Told me a story that I believed, he owned SDA CRS+ in his youth and while he was off at college his little brother sold them. Now as an adult he was on a mission to recreate his stereo system. The soundstage from a proper setup and a great recording was spectacular.

I never heard the Polks, Frazier's or the Pioneer but have heard all the rest and I mostly agree with you. I was really disappointed by the Yamaha's, I expected much more. Not that they were bad at all I just expected them to be better. The JBL's were at the top for me. I wouldn't say they were the most neutral but they were the most lifelike and just plain fun. I never liked any of the Klipsch speakers and gave up on them very early. They never seemed to get the integration of the horn and cone driver right. Did they ever get that right? I stopped listening to them decades ago. All my comments are of course just personal taste I don't think there is a "bad" speaker in the whole bunch. I kept the JBL's and a pair of Mission speakers for a very long time before moving on to Snell. I have really been getting the JBL bug again and thinking about buying a pair of JBL L52's just to have. Enjoyed hearing your thoughts on these, brings back memories.

Loved your review on vintage speakers, but I do have a couple of comments on your Polk Audio SDA 2 speakers. I've owned the same pair of these on and off since buying new in 1987(long story), and looking at yours, those are actually the SDA 2A variation. The difference is that the original SDA 2s used two Silver dome tweeters rather than one. The second tweeter was used in conjunction with the second outside mid/woofer as the Stereo Dimension Array speakers. Polk found the second tweeter was not needed and caused interference with the main tweeter in each speaker with the second mod/woofer, providing all that was needed for the proper SDA function! I know it's kind of confusing because the label on the back says SDA 2 not SDA 2A. Another observation is it looks like the original Silver dome tweeters have been replaced with the modern Polk equivalent? I had to do the same with mine not because I didn't like the Silvers it's because the tweeters were blown when I inherited the speakers back from a good friend on mines wife (long story). Thx....keep up the good videos. Oh by the way I like my large Advents much better than these Polks!

Greetings! Thanks for the clarification, I will denote that in the comments. This set came from a "Polk fanatic"? I bought an entire collection of gear that included about 15 different Polk models and MANY spare parts, like drivers. So the fact that the drivers were replaced is not a shock. Unfortunately, the prior owner had passed, so I was not able to get any history. So you like the Advents over these huh? Well, that just goes to show how subjective it all is and that we should not take any of this as more than just entertainment. More vids coming soon, so stay tuned! ;-)

@stereoniche Yes, my Advents over the Polks! Now that being said, the Polks are good speakers and do things better than the Advents, such as presenting a wider sound stage. But what they don't do is hit me in my musical soul! The Advents make we want to get up and groove with the music .... plus, I can listen these all day without any listener fatigue! The Polks just don't do that for me. That's why I originally sold them to a friend of mine many years ago before inheriting them back. Also, I thought once I replaced the original Silver Dome tweeters with the new versions, I would like them better .... not so. Another speaker to consider that has similar attributes to the Large Advents, but images better and is more 3 dimensional is the AR 2AX!

The Larger Advents are your baseline speaker and are competing against speakers costing far more. It would be more fair if you also reviewed double Advent speakers. Reviews at the time described them as some variation of sounding "greater than the sum of the parts". I can personally vouch for this. I owned double Advents for 38 years. I would often turn the second pair on and off and the difference in sound was always noticeable and amazing. I would be willing to bet that double Advents would hold their own against many of the higher priced speakers in your completion. On top of that, they would still cost less than many of them.

@@carlosoliveira-rc2xt True, and I think that was a fair review of the single Larger Advents. I've accepted reality. What I am pointing out is that if you are going to review them against competitors costing far more, make it a more of a fair contest. How do you realistically expect speaker costing $200 a pair to compete against speakers costing 2X, 3X or 5X more? You can't. That is reality and I accept that. If you wanted an inexpensive, flat, accurate, non-colored speaker the Larger Advents fit that bill. I am pointing out there was a well known solution if you wanted much better sound, still at a reasonable price. The double Advents were a known commodity in their day and could compete more closely with speakers that still cost more than the double Larger Advents. My memory is failing me but the first issue of either Stereophile or The Absolute Sound reviewed double Advents and RAVED about them. I read that review when it came out and I was shocked at what I was reading. It seemed too good to be true, especially considering the source. I worked in a HiFi store in the mid 70’s to early 80’s. We carried a number of mainstream quality speaker brands like Advent, Acoustic Research, Infinity, and JBL. We had heard about people using double New Advents, so we tried them out ourselves one day. So, we hooked up a couple of pairs of New Advents in the showroom using a Rotel integrated amp rated at 150 watts RMS. To everyone’s surprise, they blew us away. We looked at each other with our mouths and eyes wide open in disbelief. We couldn’t believe how good they sounded. They took on a character all their own. They were simply amazing. They blew away everything we had on the floor at a much lower price point than most of the higher end offerings. A week or two later, our district manager saw them and immediately ordered us to take them down. The word had gotten out about how good double New Advents were. They truly were impressive. I wound up buying a pair New Advents in the Walnut finish with the bullnose (opposed to the less expensive standard New Advents with the squared off cabinet in vinyl) with the intention of getting another pair later, but that never happened. I had years and years of enjoyment with my New Advents. After over 30 years of use (and four moves), I retired them. However, I still own them to this day, 44 years later. I don’t think that I’ll ever give them up. I might be setting them up in a small listening area in my basement, along with my 18 year old Denon receiver. I can’t wait to revisit them after them not being in use for a long time. I have fond memories of my New Advents. They will make a return soon. Just thought I’d share. I hope that you will go forward with a review of double Advents, as I’d love to get your take on that setup using these classic speakers. Keep up the good work! 👍🏻

I remember that the Large Advent speaker was offered in a more expensive wood option. The mere thought that a cabinet could improve the sound quality was mind blowing and we had serious doubts. How could what a speaker is enclosed in make a difference? The sound comes out of the drivers not the cabinet, we thought. But years later we know that a lot of sound does come out of the cabinet and it influences the sound to a great degree. This is not the most controversial rankings of all time. That honor has to go to The Consumer Guide To Stereo & Tape Equipment in the 1970s/80s, which had the Bose 901 Series III and the gigantic Beveridge model 2 speakers tied for best speakers on the market. I imagine people who just spent 7 grand on the Beveridge, seeing that, thought "What the.....?"

Too bad you didn't have the K-horn's Installed the way they were designed to be. You may be aware (or maybe not) that they have to be very tight in a corner with a minimum of four feet of wall space on each side, the more the better, as the wall is the last part of the bass horn. It is a trihedral, bifurcated, multiple impedance, exponential horn and the walls are the last part of the woofer's horn. If set up correctly they'll fill a 3,000 cubic foot auditorium with a maximum woofer excursion of 1/16 of an inch. Walter Klipsch demonstrated them this way several times driving each speaker with a mono 10 watt triode amp. Just sticking them anywhere they'll fit, well why even bother? I owned a pair for 25 years and they were BY FAR the best I have ever owned. I had to sell them when I was moving to a new house and there was only one corner that was suitable. I'm 75 now and doubt I'll move to another home again, but if I do I'll have the living/listening room designed or modified to Klipsch specs: 25 ft. wide, 16 ft. deep, with an 11 ft. ceiling, speaker's on the long wall of course. The K-horn's will have a single Cornwall in the center fed by a mono signal, volume adjusted accordingly with experimentation. Klipsch calls this "Wide Stage Stereo". The room dimensions are not arbitrary. It distributes the Eigenmode's or standing waves, evenly. Eigenmode expansion is a linear computation frequency-domain method. Sorry for the length of this but I just had to put out there that these fantastic speakers are suitable for only the very dedicated owner. Having the money helps a lot too...

Hi there! Thanks for chiming in. If you watch the full review, I explain the unfortunate situation that my room cannot accommodate their needs. In addition though, that is a weakness of the Klipschorns. Most modern home designs do not offer the room configuration needed for them to present their incredible prowess at music reproduction and it was reflected in my scoring. Fantastic speakers.... with the appropriate room.

While you delivered precisely what you promised, that is, you told us how you ranked your speakers, I feel a lot of engineering goes into making a well-performing speaker. I feel you need to include some objective data to contrast with your subjective evaluation. Also, the topic might be better captured with a title like “Speakers in my Room.” Perhaps the objective data and the acknowledged limits of the room might explain why your ‘experience’ of the Klipsch-horn yielded such a low score. Of course, the other way of doing it, as the manufacturers are supposed to do it, is measure the speaker anechoically and attempt to predict in-room performance, but I don’t think that’s what you’re after, and I wouldn’t have stopped by to listen to what you had to say if you did. I wanted to know how some different vintage speakers, some of which I recognized, performed in comparison to each other. You delivered on your promise, but I do think you gave the Klipsch-horn short shrift. Perhaps, given the response by those that have heard them, it might be better to demure, and say, ‘I would love to have included the Klipsch-horn in this roundup, but I simply haven’t yet gotten them set up properly enough to give them a fair test,’ or something along that line. First-time viewer of your channel, loved the camera work.

Thanks Jeremiah! On the Klpschorns, I have denoted that I could not set them up properly, however, I think that is going to be the situation for most potential owners. They are a special speaker, but, they require a special room that is just not as commonplace in the homes of today, so my experience is what I think most others will have if they were to bring them home from say an estate sale purchase. Now, if someone is buying them new, then they will have planned accordingly in advance. If setup properly, I can certainly see how they could have been much higher in my ratings, but, I could not give them points on their status in the speaker realm until I hear it for myself. Stay tuned, many more speakers to come and thanks for chiming in to the conversation.

@@stereoniche Point taken. Perhaps you could mention how big a room is necessary for a successful installation of the Klipsch-horn and it’s requisite dimensions, like how wide the front wall needs to be, optimum ceiling height, and distance to the back wall and listening position. Or refer us to a source that could better inform us.

I got slapped. I'm a little late... but I'm back. Ah yes, let's talk some audio. I think she was related anyway. Rating things can be very useful. You don't have to stop at rating things. You can rate happenings. That bad thing that happened; rate it on importance from 1 to 10. You may find that something that has you mad as hell, only rates a 3 in importance if you really think about it. You'll be feeling better and laughing about it in no time. Great advice.... I thought I was doing well when she shocked me and the pop I was holding spilled all over her. It was only cherry cola; 45 times out of 50 I get regular cola, which I like a little better. In fact, I like this one brand of cola so much that at home I will only drink it out of a fancy cut glass goblet. So if it would have been the regular cola that I cherish that I had tonight, I would have rated the loss of the spilled drink as a 6 in importance on a scale of 1 to 10. As it is, it was only cherry cola and I'll rate the mishap as no more than a 4.5, maybe comparable to blowing the tweeter in the 1976 Klipsch Heresy. Now if you blew the berrylium tweeter in the Yamaha NS 1000, which is worth $250/pr. on the used market; that would be a 7 or a 7.5 in importance. Even though it is not as famous a speaker, most people who've heard both, prefer the titanium driver Yamaha NS 500M. Don't tell anyone; they are still reasonably priced on the used market. Maybe everything should be numerically rated. Maybe judges at a beauty contest should rate the girl's nose, eyes, teeth and hair numerically, divide by 4 and "Voila, we have a winner! Maybe we can reach a point where computers do all the rating for us. A very controversial ranking I'm sure. Not having spent considerable time with many of those speakers; I can't say I have a valid opinion. On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you numerically rate making a bad speaker choice? Good video!

When it comes to speakers, I find it very subjective. It’s like the saying “ beauty is in the eye of the beholder” With the exception of technical data. There are so many variables. The Amp, the room, the music, the music source. The listener’s preference and the listener’s ear(hearing) At 63 and most of my life spent going to concerts. Hunting when young and other things that have damaged my hearing along with just getting old. We are not all hearing the same reproduction of sound. I have to use my ears to determine what sounds best to me. I have a Jolida tube amp, a Hafler 9130 and my Yamaha CR 1020 to drive my mid 90’s legacy protégé’s For me it’s my amp from my youth. The Yamaha. Jolida to mushy. The Hafler is nice but a bit sterile ( for me) The Yamaha gives me the warmth and punch. With the clarity of vocals without the high end being shrill. All I feel I need now is a Giselle DAC for my vintage Yamaha CD player and some nicer ( more expensive) speaker cables. The miccas are great. But I think I can still kick it up a notch. After that I’m done. Can’t keep chasing smoke at this stage of life.

I have had at least 4 Yamaha amps myself. My first was a vintage integrated which excelled at resolution but was analytical and thin, lacking body. The same for a vintage power amp, the M40 ? It was their bottom of the line power amp. I never heard an amp sound so good and synergistic with Ohm Walsh 2 speakers. Yet with other speakers it's high end was so thin and as metallicy as a tin can. Hearing it with other speakers would have made people rule it out. A case of truly magical synergism with the Ohms. The Ohms made it sound like a better amp tonally and it made the Ohms sound like a better speaker. I have come to like vintage Denon more than vintage Yamaha for amplification. Better depth, warmth, and tone colors (usually). Amazing how many of us audiophiles are around 60. I will be modifying and trying to improve my sound quality as long as I live. I do things that cost only my time for the most part, without changing out and buying new equipment. If you really know what you're doing, most vintage cd players with their own original Dacs, can be improved to the point where you would need an expensive turntable with a $4,000 or more phono cartridge to equal it's sound quality. It requires over a hundred steps, but done over the course of many years, as new ideas come about.

@@sidesup8286 you described the Denon with more tone colors. The Yamaha’s selling point was natural un colored sound. My CR-1020 from late 70’s does that. As a guy that spent first part of my life as a chef and second half as a band’s manager. I want the natural un colored sound that the artist tried to record. In other words, taste your food the way the chef made it, before adding salt etc. I can always adjust tones on my amp. At 63 and with the many things I still have going on, I only have so much time and money I’m willing to devote to the project. I spent lots of time and money in the 70’s and 80’s going down that rabbit hole. At some point unless you have lots of time and money, you encounter the law of diminishing returns. I actually have another system that is at my buddies in Oklahoma. I loaned when building our house. Consisting of a A/B legacy amp and pre amp and a pair of Sonique Encore towers that were 10k$ back in the 90’s Trying to figure out how to get it to california for less than 1,000 dollars. At 250.00 the Giselle labs DAC vs the 1 bit DAC in the Yamaha, even though it was a 900.00 CD player at the time, I’m pretty sure will add to the sound quality at minimal expense.

It isn't so much coloration that diminishes or bleaches tone colors, it is usually a dryness or a processed quality of the equipment. Way back, when I was searching for my first cd player, (1992; I started late), I was playing the same very familiar with cd on different brands cd players. I noticed the JVC cd player had much deeper tone colors than a Technics player I was A/Bing it against. The Technics might have even been a little clearer, but I went with the one I liked the instrument's sounds better on. Purity of sound also enhances tone colors. Denon's old line of Optical Class A integrated amps (PMA line) beat the Yamaha in this way. They are warmer and less thin & analytical too. In fact they even beat a Luxman integrated but by less. The Gishelli I have never heard anything but praise about. It could be the thing to do. I never experimented much with digital cables, but speaker cables and interconnects can make a whale of a difference in your sound quality. Sometimes more than changing components. I overspend on cables just in case, but look for bargains, and have gotten cables used that retailed for $900, for around $350.

The best speakers are the ones you enjoy listening to the most. It's subjective. Everyone has their own preference. I've heard "great" speakers I could not stand listening to, and lesser rated speakers I really enjoyed. So these listings of "Top 5" or "Top 10" are meaningless in my view.

i would not put any real stock in this review i have owned about 80% of what was tested and far more untested. that being said i have more than a small degree of experience. i don't like to rate speakers simply because no audio component is as subjective as speakers. i as others had a real wtf reaction to the khorns i would not even reviewed them in that grouping as the k's far outclassed all of them, and should not attempted to rate without proper placement. placement is about the physics involved. k'horn needs proper corner placement as for horn load to function depends on length of fold in the horn that yields your depth the corner allows the completion of that length of fold. a properly set up set of khorns are very arguably still a set of finest speakers out there at any price an can reproduce extreme frequency depth and impact. there down side is corner placement hence why i now have kilpsch bells a front facing horn load. kilpsch is now making a new halo front load horn speaker at the bargain price of just shy of $40k. but to review khorns in same group as a set of advents. well, i use to fly f4's an f16 for ANG that that would be about like a cessna 182 pilot trying to rate the performance envelope of my viper.
