I love this! I am going into my first year of teaching this year and I was lucky to get offers from three different schools. I believe these schools wanted me because I did everything you mentioned in this video; I was prepared, I was well dressed, I was excited, and I was confident. Something I want to add that I did that seemed to excite everyone on the panels that interviewed me was to ask them why they loved working for the school/district. As soon as I asked, they all got excited and I could see their passion shine through as they were answering. Thank you for making this video, CJ! I know it will be so helpful to others as they are trying to find a job!

Le petit prince is a book you should read at every step of your life. You learn something new everytime.

I have found that many of the jobs I have interviewed for were jobs that I was NOT the most experiences or qualified candidate for. I have put out hundreds of job apps for teaching positions and I have only had about 7 interviews in total. Only two of those schools chose to hire me. I was candid and showed them what I could do that others may not have. It worked out eventually. Getting a job is hard, but it only takes one. Thanks for sharing!

Laaaaate bloomer. Graduated at 40 and have taught off and on since then. Now 53 and second interviewing, today for my first full time position. You are nailing it good sir! I did the music thing too! Still do :-)

YES to portraying confidence!! I feel like that truly is one of the biggest things administrators look for. They need to know you can be a presence in front of a group of students.

I too messed around in community college, and got a business degree from a 4 year school at 30 yo. I will be turning 40 during my student teaching, and I’m thrilled with my decision, regardless of how late in life it might be.

Just started teaching at a title I school in Miami, fl! So far I feel very supported by admin and I’ve noticed the staff is very close and it’s a positive work environment. So many people have knocked on my door and helped me out this week. Teaching is dream job and even though this was the only job I could get, I want to make it work. I’m not making it a stop along the way to somewhere better if I can help it. I would love to stay. The thing is, I’m a first year teacher and the one thing I hate is how much people scare me about not being able to handle my classroom. I’m a petite young white woman and my coworkers, while being sweet, seem really worried about my classroom management abilities..we start the 31 so I haven’t met the kids yet. I don’t come off as intimidating but I am very very honest, I tell it like it is. I treat conflict with kids like I do with adults because I hated teachers that didn’t take me seriously when I was on high school and I think it teachers good communication skills. But I’m soft spoken, I don’t like to yell. The the consensus is I’m going to get run into the ground. My coworkers are not against the kids by any means, they are a beloved part of the school! They just run a tight ship I guess. They seem to come from an good place because they really care about the kids but they seem to care about me too. Do you have any advice? Sorry if that was so long

Great advice! So true about confidence - it's not about ego. A quiet confidence in who you are speaks loudly. The best advice I was given when I was transitioning from being a stay-at-home mom to becoming a teacher (and not being super confident about my resume) was that if you're offered an interview, you ARE qualified for the job on paper. If you weren't qualified, they wouldn't even interview you. So...you can walk in confidently and show them who you are, what you care about, and what you have to offer as a person, knowing that your resume has not hindered you. I agree with the importance of making connections with any student you run into, and I would add that you should make sure you are kind/respectful to the secretary. They often have huge sway with the principal, and if you are dismissive of the secretary, they will let the principal know. Thanks, Reynolds!

I absolutely loved the last tip about Visualization. I have done it a few times in preparation for conducting lesson plans for my teaching practice last year. And it has become my prep for almost any meeting or exercise that I feel nervous about. It boosts confidence and gives you control of a situation. I too do this technique when I am alone and no one is home so I don't come off as a crazy person. Thanks for an awesome video.

Great video. Always about the kids. I go into my current job every day with that at the foremost of my thoughts. I also have been stressing being present in whatever I am doing. I haven’t had time to catch your program on Sundays lately, but you might remember me as the “other” Stephanie. I am 50 and just earned my degree, passed the edTPA, and submitted my paperwork to the state. As I tell my students keep moving forward AND upward. Thank you for your videos, they have been very motivational but I am here today because I think I might have made a mistake. I went on an interview, got the job teaching Algebra 1 which is great, I love algebra but later I saw they had a Geometry position available and as much as I love Algebra I could say that Geometry is way way so much better!!!!!!!!! Geometry would be my bucket list. So I sent the principal an email telling him this, then asked if he hadn't filled that position would he consider me for it? How big of mistake did I make?

I’ve been at this for nearly a decade and I still don’t have the job. Genuinely scared there’s something wrong with me at this point

I hear you. Been at it 12 years and have to settle for auxiliary jobs and part time and subbing mostly. Having a MEd is killing me. They won’t call cause it’s more money. So frustrating. Hang in there!

I'm in community college right now and trying to figure out where to transfer to become a teacher. Looked at Rowan, Rutgers and Kean, but idk how to move forward. Love your videos, they've helped me cement the idea that teaching is something I actually want to pursue.

Hi Ana. I went to community college for many many years and then I transferred to Rowan University because I just heard how good their education program was. Doesn’t make me an affiliate just sharing where I went. However I don’t know so much that it’s important where you go as what you’re doing when you get there. So are you making connections with good people are you becoming a part of certain activities and in large part in my life it has been what am I doing when I get to a place and not so much the place that’s going to decide whether or not I have a good experience or not. My best to you and this next adventure in your life if I can ever help please just let me know ✌🏽

Totally depends on your admin. I would say most wold be fine with it. It could be seen as a positive or a negative depending on who's doing the hiring!

What I've found to be the most transformative for my students is getting them to realize one thing: Math isn't about getting correct answer. So much math anxiety comes from the misconception that if I can't get the right answer to this question then all my time and effort is worthless. This leads to kids getting paralyzed with anxiety when the solution pathway isn't immediately clear. Math is about logic and problem solving. So long as you place the focus on understanding the task and experimenting with different strategies you'll take a lot of pressure off yourself and reduce your math anxiety. Hope this helped!

I didnt know you did sample lessons in the US, in Belgium this doesn't exist, you are being hired only on the base of the interview. A couple of weeks or months later the principal will come unnanounced in your classroom to see how you are teaching and how your relationship with your students is.
