Hearing Liron say it's OK to make crappy paintings. In fact, you need to make crappy paintings to improve.
Great tips from superb artists, all useful but I have to say the very first one speaks loudest to me - PAINT, PAINT, PAINT. I spend far too much time watching videos hoping to magically become an accomplished artist when, deep down, I know there are no short cuts - I would progress so much faster if I spent that time with brush in hand!

Thanks, Barbara! Oh, I totally agree...I know I’m guilty of that. Partly for me at least, because watching someone else do it and imagining myself doing it is a lot easier (and less frustrating) than doing it myself..ha!! But as you say, to really improve we need to explore, play and paint!
Thank you, Tom, for the many helpful advice that these artists have shared. I especially thank you for your support while teaching on KZread to so many new artists like me. My favorite tip on this video is to know your materials and use professional grade when possible. I’ve accumulated so many things since I started painting, but have not experimented enough with them. I hope to do that now.
Awesome tips 😁Great work everyone! And thank you Tom - for making this happen! 🎨👏👏

I liked Tori's comment about being happy if you're only 85% thrilled with your work sometimes. Because that's what it is a lot of the time LOL! Watercolor definitely took the perfectionist out of me... And that was a good thing!
Thank you Tom for taking the time to do this. Really appreciate all the tips.

Tom, I just found your channel! Some years ago I took a photography class, black and white, and I recently selected five of those photos that I just loved. I'm now planning to paint them in watercolor. 50 years ago I had a watercolor teacher named Win Jones... He was quite famous, but that was before the internet and when I look I don't ever find anything about him. I'm sure he's passed away by now. His classes were exciting and he really fired us up about watercolor! Don't know if you've ever heard of him... But I am wondering if you were a teacher at one time You have a terrific vocabulary and are so well organized in your presentations. Bravo! And THANK YOU!
Chien Chung Wei (probably my favorite watercolorist) likes to use one palette for transparent paints and another palette for opaque colors. I've grown as a painter just by incorporating opaque colors. It's expanded my range so to speak. I guess that's my tip for other painters.

Oh yes...a wonderful artist! Certainly up there with my favourites. It’s a great tip. I think simply understanding that transparent and opaque have notably different qualities, and then understanding them both is a huge advantage. Thank you for an insightful comment! Kind Regards, T

I LOVE your tips from other artists! It's good to hear it's okay to make bad paintings because it's all part to the journey. Also, I have never really put thought into the part of the painting that has no paint, how it makes the painted part pop. Thanks for the fundamentals!!
What an incredibly inspiring video. All of these tips have their important place in watercolour. Thank you. Also, great choice to lead with Liron! He's a fabulous bundle of watercolour energy.
Loved this. It gave me direction!
Oh wow this was so much fun, especially since I am subscribed to 2 of these artists already. You have introduced me to many new ones. Great tips! It's so useful hearing that different artists have different opinions on their best tip, and all have struggled with different challenges along the way - it inspires confidence to know that there's no one 'right' way and everyone is different (& might even give another tip on a different day!). I think the one about not expecting perfection resonates most - I'm new to this and all my paintings are pretty basic, but I learn something from every one!

A few months late watching this Tom, but this is fantastic advice from some fantastic artists. I think Liron's comment at the start of the video resonated most strongly for me. Paint, paint and keep painting...this is my biggest challenge, not painting enough or regularly enough and then getting frustrated when things don't go exactly how I wanted because it's not second nature to me. OK, off to paint!
@tomshepherdartist
2 жыл бұрын
So pleased you enjoyed it! And I agree, that single bit of advice is probably the key more than anything else! Little and often can work wonders for the feeling of second nature!!!:) Happy painting, and thanks for the comment :) T

Interesting. One says plan, one says play. At the beginning play gave me anxiety attacks and chest pain. I needed a plan. Now when I'm blocked I play and find it very relaxing. Oh how we change along the way! Btw I am still a planner .😉
@tomshepherdartist
2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely...interesting to hear! I am a partial planner, sometimes proper planner, I do find it actual gives me the feeling of being more freedom to play when i've planned, as long s I don't feel I have to rigidly stick to the plan..balance between the two:) Thanks for a great comment! T

I’ve only just found you and very pleased that I have Tom. Your clear style really speaks to me. I’m a lockdown learner and really grateful to all the generous artists and the wonderful tutorials on offer and have recently realised that my poorer efforts are for subjects that have no appeal for me, so Jane’s final tip is my favourite. Only paint what you are drawn to.

So pleased you are enjoying the videos! Thanks for joining the channel :) Great tip, absolutely! With so many artists and paintings to look at, I think we can all be pulled to painting what we feel we "should" and forgetting that actually we will have the most fun and success when we paint what we are most drawn to..absolutely!!:) T

Thank you.. question, do u paint on flat table or tilted easel!!
I don't paint anything like the people that were on here. The tips they gave were quick and some what helpful. The only person I already follow was Liron, he great and always bring a reason to keep at it. My only thought was that your diversity of younger/old, male female was great but they were all white. People of color paint in watercolor also. I bet in your friend group they know a few. That is all. Thanks for the heads about the podcast, it's great to listen to something interesting while you paint. Audiobooks old after a while. Cheers Thomas

An excellent video, great to listen to the professionals, even for a relative newbie like me. I have watched videos by Liron and Paul, but the others are new to me, including you. So I'll definitely be checking out the other channels. Mind you my Watercolour KZread folder already has in excess of 1,000 videos in it, not that I've watched them all! I think Liron's advice of practice, practice, practice is the way to improve at anything, not just painting. However, on KZread it's too easy to watch way too much stuff and do far less practice. 😅
@tomshepherdartist

Hi ya Mark, so glad you enjoyed it! They are a good bunch hey. Haha sounds like my "to watch" list. I totally agree, no substitute for juts getting down to it. Easy to consume far more than we practice...all though a good bit of consumption has it's place!!:) T
Great tips and most relative. Artists produce art, not photos.
