Ken Amada from Persona 3. He uses the spear effectively as a little kid, his way of handling situations is straight to the point, and again, He masters this thing as a LITTLE KID. How does he not deserve recognition.

***** It's hard not to want to defend myself, but you're absolutely right on all of your points. I'm GreenScorpion's friend and co-writer, and am personally responsible for all of the points you made. Truth be told, this was not the best-researched list. In my original draft, I had a lot more qualifiers for my information. Since this list was looking at fictitious weapons, I made the decision to group halberds, lances, and etc. under the vague description of "spear." Since then this video has gotten copious complaints about what items appear on this list. The original draft included a prolonged statement in which I explained why we made this generalization despite the fundamental differences, but we decided to cut that explanation to shorten the runtime of the introduction, hoping the viewers would go with it. Apparently many didn't, and that's our bad. In short, I didn't want to use such rigid distinction as "spear", because of the similar fighting styles of the many "long point" weapons. A book about weaponry through the ages that I once read made the same classification, but heck if I can recall what book it was. As for the "probably older than swords thing", this was a simple as example of me second-guessing myself on something I clearly knew. These things happen. The whole ponytail thing, yeah, I don't really have much defense for that. That's just me being naive. There's only so much fact-checking I can do given my time. In this case I was more referencing what this design tends to remind people of in popular culture, rather than the actual historical context, but again that doesn't excuse it. Anyway I appreciate the critque and personally apologize for these and all other factual errors that I sometimes make in these videos.

There's some great ones from Legend of Dragoon. We actually were originally planning to use Ryuji from No More Heroes 2, but we felt that his zanbatou was too much of a stretch for spears, even considering the rest of this list. Ephraim from Fire Emblem is a good alternative for Nephenee, and there's many others.

I DEFINITELY agree with you on Xaldin being number 1. This is also my favorite weapons month list of all time.

Dragoons are my favorite FF class. Fast, heavily armored, hard hitting, and with elemental attacks. And they look awesome.

Spear is a very broad description like how swords can be described as scimitars, katanas, and broadswords to mention a few. The halberd is a type of spear which can include naginata, nagano, pikes, and glaives.

Technically, Seong Mina uses a Naginata. But, eh, details.

As something of an amateur melee weapon enthusiast, I can tell you that there is a big difference between a Spear, a Lance, a Halberd, and any other stick with pointy bit. This should have been called Best Pole-arm Wielders.

*sigh* Fail at Dynasty Warriors there... Lu Bu uses a halberd, isn't quite as much of a wall as you made out to be and he does die... pretty early on actually.

Cristian Pearson What kind of a question is that? Of course I've played as Lu Bu but every character becomes totally OP after a while and Lu Bu doesn't start off any more OP than Guan Yu or Zhang Fei. Also, he isn't using two crossed spears they are two crossed voulges which are essentially just a pair of Zhang Fei's weapons the dual voulges.

gillyboy100 Hm. Well I just learned something. I've never heard of a voulge. And by the way, I don't have a lot of experience with the series. I do know that he dies relatively early in the story. All I know is that the game hyped him up a ton as one of the strongest characters but yeah, he was probably waaayyy too overhyped. Now excuse me, I'm gonna go look up what a voulge is.

Ryuji from No More Heroes 2 is another character that tells you "whatcha see is whatcha get!". Also Yuki from The Last Blade is another great character to put on this list.

dear god fighting Xaldin was murder... one of the few KH bosses that I've never completed without damage... I also gotta suggest using Ara Han from Elsword. And Zhao Yun shoulda been on here instead of Lu Bu, since Lu Bu uses a halberd based weapon

How about Lavitz in Legend of Dragoon?

The problem with the soul series is the alternate weapons they use actually fit many categories. Mina uses halberds and naginata mostly but I'm sure there are a couple of spears in there as well. Weapons are picked for their abilities, reach, power etc. Game play at first involves finding and collecting your arsenal and then using it to defeat trick boss battles and curious quirky (often one sided) match-ups. Not bad for a fighting game.

I know right! Right when you were about to announce it, I was thinking "Xaldin..." and then, you said "Whirlwind Lancer", and I was like "GEE!"

Does it has similar gameplay? Because while I can stand the "atcive" battle system, I DESPISE Random Encounters...

About Xin Zhao killing 44,850 people while imprisoned, I believe that you may have been short by 300, assuming that he started off at rank 0 and ended at rank 300. Note to anyone who's interested: to quickly find the sum of all whole numbers from 1 to 300, just add the smallest and biggest numbers together (1+300=301), then multiply the result by half of number of numbers that need to be added up (300/2=150). The answer should be 45,150 (301x150).

I would love if they made more action adventures games like ninja gaiden, legend of zelda, and bayonetta where main character uses polearm or spear. I think dante inferno is the closest i think of. I know some old nes and snes had some spear wielders.

thats what the strategy guide said if im not mistaken, and thats also my experience with the game. It might possible start at 50% it has been over 8 years since i played the game or read the guide. ^^

Nice to see Lu Bu and Kain on this list. Also, that Xaldin guy could be straight out of the Fate series. He reminds me of Gilgamesch, a king who's capable of summoning hundreds of legendary weapons (Noble phantasms) at the same time.

Nah. Xaldin just has 6 spears, none of them any different, unlike Gilgamesh, who has literally every Noble Phantasm and is practically a god.

I'm glad that Waddle Dee (otherwise known as Bandana Dee) made an appearance on the list. I love playing as him (or at least Spear Kirby) in Return to Dreamland. Favorite Copy ability of all time.

A halbers is a hybrid weapon. A spear with an axe's blade and usually a pick-like spike on the opposing side. So yes, it's a spear. @jonathankimmel It was actually meant for cavaly. The reach of the halberd, added to the potency of fighting at a height gave it tremendous hacking and piercing power. Even on foot, it was still something to be wary over.

I knew Eric Lecarde had to be on this list somewhere!!! I actually liked him in castlevania judgement... because that was the first game I saw him in. Also, whenever I couldn't really sleep and decided to play videogames but couldn't maintain some form of thought pattern for more than a few seconds or even see clearly since I was so tired, if I decided to play castlevania judgement until I felt like sleeping I would play as Eric because with him you can pretty much just hit random buttons and win.

*Gets to number 1* So freaking true... Xaldin. Just Xaldin. Xal-FREAKING-DIN! He's a complete wipe and one of my favorite bosses ever. Of all time. They did perfectly with his fight, I couldn't even be upset about his berserker invincibility. Then when I saw his lances turn into... that. I cried. He was the third, or possibly second hardest boss for me and I thank him for it.

I could imagine Orca taking down the entire army of Ganon. Blocking 1,000 strikes without breaking a sweat, without getting harmed, he is probably a near unbeatable beast in battle. Who knows? He might even rival Link in skill.

yeah, the gameplay is fairly similar aside from the timing based combos, and the random encounters are pretty frequent, but at least you get a fair warning before they happen

Well, in the video there is also lance wielders and other spear-like weapon wielders that don't use actual spears, but both lances and halberds are similar to spears so I guess they count.
