Don't worry about it. Been loving the channel for the last two years. You remind me of my brother in law, an ex Vietnam vet Seabee combat construction guy and fire arms instructor. He was a volunteer fireman who died a couple years back of Emphysema, and I miss him. Good sense of humor, and quietly amazingly competent. Thanks for the content.

I just spent the last hr watching this 2 parter and love it for so many reason. Straight forward no bs approach, good dry humor, little sarcasm and a ton of very good info.

part of presenting is leaving time for people to process. Listening to someone speak fast for more than 15 minutes causes you to only remember the last 15 minutes of info after an hour of dialogue. Leaving your audience time to digest and process the information is important. He really makes it work.

Saying that does two things: First, it primes the viewer to expect it, so if it's something that *would* be jarring to someone, it's much less likely to happen because they know it's coming Secondly, and this is something I recognize because I also do it, it makes any criticism of the way he speaks (which is a trashy thing to complain about, regardless) completely null and void. There's no way to stop it, but talking about your perceived or real "flaws" is an effective way of neutering any complaints or insults about it. What I'm saying is, the man is a great...Uhhh, speaker, lecturer, presenter...? Whichever one he'd prefer, and I'm willing to bet that he's worked very hard for to get as good as he is at it.

Well since Paul invited legal comments from an attorney’s perspective, I’ll give mine: everything he said in this video is 100% accurate, particularly the overview of the rules of engagement. I’ve been a criminal prosecutor since 1993, reviewed more than a few cases of citizen uses of force and officer-involved shootings. His general overview about the legal concepts that govern your use of a firearm are spot-on, and I’ll underscore that there are no bright-line rules to guide your actions; it’s case-by-case and what appeared reasonable under those unique circumstances. One big point Paul has occasionally touched upon: whatever you do, assume that your actions will undoubtedly be scrutinized by the police, prosecutors, and court system in light LEAST favorable to you (unless you live in Texas, maybe!), and every little thing you do and say will be used against you, so give some thought as to how you will act BEFORE and AFTER you use your firearm. Example- I believe George Zimmerman’s use of deadly force against Trevon Martin was complete legal and appropriate, yet he came as close as you can get to a 1st Degree Murder conviction as you’d want, in large part due to the way he was perceived (rightfully or wrongfully)- “wanna-be cop/defender of the community, itching to find a crime where none existed, etc,” - this may not be justified criticism but it doesn’t matter, because a great many people in the community, to include the state prosecutors bowing to public pressure, bought into it. So give some thought about each of the points Paul raises but recognize the seriousness of the discussion once you move off the internet and into the real world.

I've taken many training classes on firearms and personal defense using them. I've even become an NRA certified instructor to get the details down. The one thing I have learned - fortunately or unfortunately - is to think twice before getting involved trying to defend someone else or even using your firearm for self-defense unless you are cornered and have no other choice. There is no Mulligan using a firearm when you shoot someone. This is maybe the wrong lesson learned, but it all seems to point in the direction of walk away if you can. I carry plenty of firearm insurance just in case that day arrives.

I recently bought a few firearms. I haven't shot one or even handled one in probably 15 years. Within one week I looked up the laws of gun ownership and when, where and how I can carry them. I then contacted a couple of friends that are former and current police officers. I educated myself on what was available in my area and I could afford VS what I think I need for defense. I then legally passed the checks and purchased said firearms. I immediately continued to educate myself on guns and I still educate as much as I can take in. I also immediately bought the correct ammunition and shot each one numerous times to become familiar with the guns. In that check I also learned they work and work well. I also applied for a concealed carry permit on Saturday and I was approved the following Tuesday. All it takes is the want to properly educate yourself on any subject. We have a great advantage now. It's called KZread. Sure you have to find the fake experts and bad information and ignore it. Then you find channels like Mr Harrell has here. Thank you for what you do sir. Also thank you for your service.

Re: Quick access to a firearm. I went to a home at the tail end of a multiple murder, where one final shot occurred upon our entry. The ex boyfriend knocked on the front door and the 20 year old son/brother answered. The ex BF immediately shot the brother in the throat. The brother fled to a neighbor, who called 911. The brother lived. The ex entered and shot the girlfriend in the abdomen, she fell to the floor, and then he shot her in the head. Dad must have gone to the top of the stairs to look down at the commotion, as evidenced by bullet holes behind where he would have stood. Also, on most the stairs were empty shell casings. The suspect shooting as he advanced. Inside the upstairs bedroom was dad face down on the carpet, one bullet hole in the back, another in the back of the head. Mom was dead in her bed. A bullet went through her hand and entered her forehead. Dad had a Ruger 9mm in his hand. It still had a trigger lock on it and no magazine in it. The magazine was in the closet and was unloaded. The suspect shot himself as we came in. Two morals of the story. 1. You are responsible for your own safety and security. 2. If you need your firearm, you will need it instantly. It had better be ready to go, and on your person or within arms reach. Great video as always....love your work.

Unless I'm proven wrong, isn't it best to leave home defense weapons just out of sight and teach the kids about gun use and safety? It's what a lot of old school parents believe in. It's like back in the 90s I knew not to drink random things under the kitchen sink and had very little to do with those "Mr. Yuk" stickers. It's a shame that family had to go out like that and the father was very unprepared.

Your tips on storing a "Tool" securely remind me of the three trade offs in data security. Confidentiality, Accessibility, and Integrity. Confidentiality: You must make sure that the users of the tools are the ones allowed to use it and only they have access. Accessibility: You cannot make the tools so secure that the users don't have access. Integrity: You must make sure that the tools are in working order and that the users know how to use them. Seems security is universal whether the tools used are a gun or data.

You seem to be demonstrating a trait of a fake expert... making sweeping generalizations. Communication is a two part relationship... and can fail on either side. The failure could be by the listener, or the failure can be the communicator, or a combination of all parties involved. A person can fail to accurately convey their meaning. It is the responsibility of the communicator to properly convey their meaning, with proper comprehension and articulation of the language they speak. The reason it is their responsibility, is because they are the one attempting to communicate information, they have a vested interest in successfully communicating that information. If the listener is not understanding, then the communicator must try to explain it differently, assuming they still care about conveying their meaning. If they don't care if their communication is successful... why bother the attempt at all? If the communicator accurately conveys their meaning with sufficient comprehension of the language and topic... and the listener intends on learning, then it is the listener's responsibility to play their role sufficiently, by listening and possibly asking questions or introducing counter points for clarification etc.. If they don't care enough about learning to effectively listen... then why bother the attempt at all?

@ It is a reference to a fairy tale called "Three Billy Goats Gruff" in which three billy goats try to cross a bridge that a troll lives under. The troll tries to eat the goats, but the goats outsmart the troll. "Troll" is also a term for people on the internet who make deliberately provocative statements in an attempt to get a rise out of people. Paul Harrell was taking advantage of this double meaning by making the literary reference to refer to these people who were being deliberately obtuse in the youtube comments of the previous video.

I am reminded of shooting back in the early 1980's - Guy rob a bank and exited from the bank took a shot at someone who then pulls his gun and shot him dead. The family of the bank robber tried to say his shot was not at anyone just trying to clear the people away from him. Courts wanted nothing to do with it and turn it down Video show gun pointed in the general direction of the person returning fire. Justified shooting because 1. gun pointed in his direction 2. gun was fired. But the guy was still charged with a misdemeanor crime of Discharged of a gun with in the city limits. The judge ordered a Fine $1 + Court cost then waived all fee's. I think it was more done to cover him in case of the family coming after him in civil court

I dealt with a similar situation involving a store owner shooting an armed robber. A certain part of the community got up in arms due to the race of the robber. The store owner wound up being charged with a simple misdemeanor though (I can’t remember the exact charge) he killed the robber. The judge and district attorney accepted his guilty plea and did not even fine him. He got his gun back and went home.

I've been a prosecutor now approaching 20 years, so I too will accept Paul's invitation to comment on Self-Defense. Paul's admonition to consult a local attorney is probably the most important thing he said with regard to this point. If an intruder enters your home, some States have the "Castle Doctrine" and "Stand Your Ground" rules. Other States, however, have laws requiring a home owner to retreat first, and only employ deadly force when it's the last possible option. And, what is "reasonable" in rural Texas may not be "reasonable" in urban San Francisco. You need a feel for what the people in your area believe is "reasonable" because, ultimately, it's those people on your jury that will decide if you were acting reaonable or not.

What you say is in fact one of the biggest problems, not just in regard to firearms ownership/usage, but in the broad sense the way our lives are controlled by the political and legal sectors. Why are there so many laws? Each State/Territory has a different set of laws and rules. Is America "one country" or is it a continent comprised of numerous countries? The law should be the same for each and every person in the USA, not the plethora of often vague interpretations as we see. I have advocated this here in Australia for many years, each state has different laws in relation to the same thing, supposedly mutual reciprocation was meant to bring things into a more level state across the whole of the country but the legal and political sectors maintain their own set of laws from state to state. Each motor vehicle driver should have the same set of rules right across the country, each firearms owner should have the same set of rules right across the country. But the divide and rule mentality prevails, each "fiefdom" creating its own little cluster of laws and rules.

I live in Tennessee. All firearms stores in the state are considered "essential" businesses and were allowed to stay open. The county I live in even declared itself a 2nd Amendment sanctuary. I feel blessed to have grown up and lived my life in Tennessee. It feels good knowing the political officials in my state recognize and respect the fact that firearms are part of this state's culture. Bought my first revolver today. Ruger SP101 .357 magnum with a 3.1 inch barrel. Really impressed with it so far. As he said, laws can vary greatly from place to place. I didn't know until a few days ago that in the state of Tennessee, as long as you are legally able to own a firearm and are in a vehicle that is legally allowed to be on the road, you can have a loaded concealed firearm in the vehicle without a permit. This includes handguns as well as long guns. This is allowed under the expanded castle doctrine. I doubt many other places allow that.

I'm not a gun enthusiast, so I suspect closer to your target audience for these 2 videos, than your regular subscribers, but I grew up hunting, was in a Jr. high shooting club and always qualified at expert marksman in the USMC. You might say I had more than average experience with firearms in my youth, but got rusty over the many years inbetween. Because I am now semi retired I have more time to hunt and because of beer, I am brushing up on old skills and thinking about personal defense because I travel alone more often than ever before. Also because beer has freaked some people out. Great video, clear key points and helpful information. Than you!

@@bluesonicstreak7317 Glocks are classified as restricted firearms yes, but you are able to get a restricted level PAL (Possession and Acquisition Licence). However part of the reason the Glock was his recommendation was the magazine capacity, which is limited to 10 rounds in Canada rather than the 15 rounds in his model. Semiautomatic handgun magazines in Canada are limited to a maximum 10 cartridges (this includes both rimfire and centrefire semi-automatic handguns). The exception are magazines designed for one calibre that will function in handguns of a different calibre and hold a higher capacity. The RCMP give an example as follows: "Heckler and Koch P7 pistol chambered for 9mm Luger caliber: The magazine designed for the 40 S&W calibre variant of the pistol will hold 13 cartridges of 9mm Luger calibre and function in the 9mm Luger calibre P7 pistol. This is permissible as the maximum permitted capacity of the 40 S&W calibre magazine must be measured by the number of 40 S&W calibre cartridges it is capable of holding, which is 10 such cartridges in the case of the HK P7 pistol magazine." www.canadagunclub.com/p/gun-magazine-capacity-limits-in-canada.html www.canadagunclub.com/p/getting-your-gun-licence-in-canada-pal.html

It makes some sense. If you are assuming that the law was made so people couldnt just pull a loaded gun on an officer (yes, I know criminals dont follow the law etc.) then it would follow that having a gun in a state that it could be loaded in a second would either be included, or the whole law would be pointless. To be fair though, I am one of those people who know nothing about firearms, so I might completely misunderstand the situation.

When I first moved out to South Eastern Washington, coming from the Chicago area of Illinois, I took a hunter education course to get my Washington hunting license. Part of that course involved us having a Q&A with one of the local game wardens, and she was very familiar with the various gun laws. When she told us that it's illegal to transport a long gun loaded in a vehicle, I asked her if the long gun is in a locked case, with no rounds in the gun, but it had a loaded mag in the case, was that considered loaded? Everyone in the class looked at me like I was stupid, and she looked absolutely bewildered, like she'd never heard anything that retarded ever before. She said, if the chamber is empty, and there's no attached mag with rounds in it, it's unloaded. She then asked why on Earth I would think an unloaded gun with a loaded mag in the same case would constitute a loaded firearm. I told her that was the law back where I lived in Illinois, and I had the same reaction they did first time I heard that truly retarded law. So because I already knew the definition of "loaded" may not be the same in every jurisdiction, obviously I had to ask to clarify. As for the unconstitutional I-1639 that was passed here in WA in 2019, one of the new laws is that all guns at home must be locked in a safe, and if someone steals your gun, then commits a crime with it, you can be charged as an accessory to that crime. Well, during the mandatory "compliance training," the sheriff spent 2 hours going over the bill word for word explaining how idiotic and unconstitutional it is, that he didn't serve in Desert Storm and watch his buddies die just so tyrants could strip us of our liberty (y'all would love this guy, btw), and when he got to the part about guns needing to be locked in safes, he just called it like it is, and said, "This is clearly to discourage poor people from owning firearms." He then told us he'd already instructed his officers that as long as the place of residence was locked, and the perp had to break in to enter, you cannot be held responsible if they steal your gun(s) and use them in a crime. He said in his jurisdiction, your home is your safe. He still encouraged us to use trigger or cable locks on our guns, as those typically cost less than a box of ammo, but he said that's just a recommendation of prudence. I really love the area I live in now, as it's VERY pro-firearm, and it seems like everyone and their grandma owns a gun. It's also a very quiet and peaceful town, where the most common crimes seem to be speeding and drunk driving. Violent crime is virtually non-existent here. Even during the pandemic hoarding, people were surprisingly courteous and patient. I thought I lived in America back in Illinois, but when I moved to this little desert country town about an hour's drive North of Pendleton, I realized how wrong I was. Anyway, hopefully my anecdote was worth your time. Not sure if I had a point. I just enjoyed the video, and thought I'd share as it's related to some of the stuff discussed in the presentation.

IL CCW instructor here. In IL with a valid FOID card you can have the ammunition in the same container as the firearm during transport including in the magazine so long as no ammunition is in any way inserted into the firearm. No distinction between long gun and handgun in this area of law. The two container carry cases around 2009 settled what loaded means under FOID act. However, the Wildlife Code is another beast along with the Unlawful Use of Weapons as under UUW if you break any part of transport law and have 'readily accessible ammo' it is an aggravating factor. See ISP transport brochure: www2.illinois.gov/dnr/hunting/Documents/TransportYourFirearmLegally.pdf

  • @Gottaculat

    @Gottaculat

    4 жыл бұрын

@@ilcctinstructor6870 Ah, that's what it was. I lived in Illinois for over 30 years, and never bought a gun because the idea of a FOID card was enough to deter me. I still learned instead how to make explosives and homemade alternatives. I remember my friend telling me about how stupid the laws were when he bought his first handgun, and I wanted no part in that mess. Upon moving out here, I applied for a CPL (concealed pistol license), then when I had that, buying my first handgun was as simple as showing my CPL, driver's license, waiting 10 minutes for the background check, then paying them. I was in and out in about 15 minutes, as it should be. People out here have no idea what a FOID card is, and when you tell them, they're appalled that such a thing exists in this country. Unfortunately, I-1639 added a 10 day waiting period for ALL semi-auto rifles and handguns, raised the age to buy a semi-auto rifle (even a Ruger 10/22) to 21, same as handguns, added a $25 tax, AND you need a state authorized "compliance training" certificate. There's even more bullshit, but it's too lengthy to go into here, and there are plenty of videos already covering I-1639. I was wrong about the specifics in Illinois, but then again I wasn't a firearm owner at the time, so it makes sense I wouldn't have known specifics. Glad you could clear that up. I just hope people would stop being Fudds and wake up. The Fudds here in Washington ignored I-1639 because they thought it was only applying to scary "weapons of war" ( a term unbelievably retarded, as just WTF do they think a K98, 1903 Springfield, or Mosin is?). Then they realize they can't gift their 18-year-old an American classic like the Ruger 10/22, because under the new law, that's a "semi-automatic assault rifle." No joke. The Fudds have woken up, but it seems their efforts are too little too late. To repeal the bill, they had to use poster size signature sheets, and if you fold them, they become void. Also, if someone, say an anti-gun activist, signs their name on multiple sheets at different locations, all other 39 signatures on each sheet are also void. As you can imagine, not enough signatures were obtained. The system is broken and stacked in the favor of tyrants.

Heck, if I had Bloomberg and Soros level funds, I'd build you guys a badass range and put up a helluva fight to rid Illinois of their communist gun laws once and for all. I may not live there anymore, but I grew up there, and you're all still Americans, and we need to remember that, that when Americans are suffering from tyranny in a distant state, we're hurt just as much, as letting such injustice go unchallenged tells tyrants it's okay. Another hidden cost of firearms ownership: You start shooting your first one, you like it so much you decide there is another one you would like to have too. One day you look in the "gun room" to see there are now two safes with out 30 to 40 firearms in them and you are shooting about 500 rounds of ammo of various calibers/gauges a year through them. Then of course there is the cost of the cleaning supplies, cases for carrying them to the range, ear protection, eye protection, targets, etc. But now you are just another happy gun nut.

Paul, I’m a relatively new gun owner in that I’ve owned a handgun and took training when I initially purchased a few years ago, have been to the range to practice some (not as much as I would have liked), but with recent events have looked into different types of other firearms for added home protection. I can’t tell you enough how much I appreciate your videos. They’ve been extremely helpful and I enjoy how you clearly articulate details, with a bit of humor and an occasional “Shatneresk” pause 😊. Apologies for those who can’t comment above a 3rd grade level. Please keep up the great work!

Thanks for the video! On the question of imminent danger, I remember a scenario that I learned about twice. Before I bought my first handgun, I took a class. Friends had tried to teach me shooting, and the results had always been poor and frustrating. Before giving up completely, I took a class taught through a local adult education program and taught by a local police department. As they went through a series of "Shoot - Don't Shoot" scenarios, they mentioned the case of a robbery at a convenience store. In the scenario, the robber gets a six-pack of beer and comes to the counter. He puts the beer on the counter and pulls a gun as the clerk starts to ring up the purchase. The clerk gives him the money and the robber walks to the front door of the convenience store. As the robber walks away, the clerk pulls a gun from under the counter and starts to shoot. At this point, the video stops and the instructors ask whether the clerk can make a justified shooting to the back of the robber. Most of us said that the clerk couldn't, but the police explained that the clerk could be justified in shooting. The robber was still in easy range to turn and shoot the clerk. The robber had threatened the clerk's life with a loaded gun. Furthermore, there are documented cases of robbers going to the door of the store to scan the parking lot before turning and shooting the clerk to eliminate the clerk as a witness. The police said that legally, the clerk could shoot but there's no absolute right answer of whether the clerk should shoot. In most cases, the robber will leave the store without shooting the clerk. If that's the robber's intention, then the clerk has survived and that's the most important point. If the clerk decides to shoot, then the robber might not be stopped by the first shot, and that might start a gunfight where the clerk could be injured or killed..If the clerk waits until the robber turns and looks at him again, the robber might make an evasive move and start a gunfight with all the risks associated with a gunfight. If the clerk does nothing and the robber is planning to kill the clerk, then waiting too long again puts the clerk in a gunfight where the robber might have an advantage because he's dictating the timing. One point was to teach us about when a threat was imminent and how a threat can remain imminent longer than many people will realize. Another point was to say that there can be cases where the legal answer is clear but the best strategic/tactical answer is not clear. The second time I learned about this scenario was a few years later. I forget where I read of the incident, but I felt the source was reliable. In the incident, a guy I had known in college was killed in this scenario. He was working at a sporting good store (climbing, camping, and hiking, not guns) and a robber did exactly what the police described. The robber took all the money in the cash register, and the guy I knew hadn't resisted at all. The robber walked to the door of the shop, scanned the area outside, and turned and shot the guy I had known. The shot was fatal. I don't know whether they ever caught the robber. Another interesting case happened in the Oklahoma City area in the early 90's. A woman woke up to find a strange guy going through her underwear drawer. She shot him in the back. The district attorney said that no charges would be filed. A strange intruder going through a woman's underwear drawer was considered an imminent threat. On another point of controversy, I recently tried to load a J-frame revolver with a speed loader without looking at the revolver. I have a package of .38 Special snap caps. At no time did I need five seconds to load the revolver without looking. The big challenge was remembering to keep the revolver pointed downwards so that gravity would assist the cartridges going into the chambers. Otherwise, I'd sometimes pull a cartridge back out of the chamber as I moved the speed loader. Keeping the gun pointed downwards is very difficult if practicing from a recliner that is reclined. From an upright position, this technique is pretty easy. I've never been fast at anything. With my health issues, I'm even slower. However, ten or fifteen minutes of practice got me to a point where I wasn't significantly slower not looking as looking. Admittedly, I've loaded revolvers with a speed loader a few times in my life, so I'm not the same as someone who is just starting. I also believe that the ejector rod on my J-frame is too short for me to bend simply by slapping the end of the rod with some force. I just don't think that the bending moment is there.

NedryOS while some people can pick locks, most gun safes I encounter have keypads or combination dials. While hard cases have key locks in them, the sight of something being locked is often enough of a deterrent. You see this a lot with yard gates. A determined person could simply unscrew the latch plate because idiot Joe Shmoe put it on with Philips Or flathead screws. Or break the lock. Or the fence because it’s sun bleached, weathered 1x6 on rusty hinges

  • @alexlongfur2515

Point is, most people won’t open the gate. Or if they do, they circumvent the lock entirely. This is off topic though, I just wanted to rant on the stigma lock picking gets. Fun hobby, useful. Just... so many other ways to break in. Had to help a manager get in the office once because he left his keys inside. This was in a slow grocery store, those who saw knew we’d been locked out of the office so it wasn’t an issue.

Hospitals are furloughing employees because they're not busy. If slowing the spread of beer was about preventing an overload on the system, when will that mission be declared a success? Has it already prevented the evil spike that everyone was worried about? And why is a place like hot-stuff NYC unable to take care of themselves? It's a money-grab!
