IN A JOSHSCORCHER COUNTDOWN??? that was a HUGE surprise and as a fan of the Drawn to Life series, i absolutely love that Wilfre made #1. it's absolutely deserved with just how well written he is with his symbolism and personality. major thanks for talking about the series in general cuz it's criminally underrated in my opinion

@@uprising4c19 The switch version is far better anyways. It has all the content from the 3DS version with a few extras and the best Mii Maker in history with literally infinite possibilities. Plus the Switch is far easier to record than the 3DS since the switch uses USB-C and is therefore easily compatible with a capture card while for the 3DS you have to physically mod the console to add a USB slot in order to connect the capture card. The only downside is no spotpass for finding miis easily but that can be solved by going online and using codes for users with hundreds of the best miis. I think there's an entire subreddit for finding miis in Miitopia switch. Plus better graphics.

I was not expecting to see Dragalia Lost in a list, specially considering it is a mobile game, yet, I gotta say, for a game that has literally Satan on it, the other was the best antagonist they had. Thank you for the memories that came back with your video

Of all the games that would’ve been in number 1 for top devil, I wouldn’t have thought it would be Drawn to Life. Really loved those games growing up and still have them now.

Makes me so happy to hear Dragalia Lost get a spot on these list, knowing that it was loved and sad to see it go :( hope to see it appear in more lists in the future ^^

as _soon_ as i saw the 5th Cell logo on-screen, i started kicking my feet in childish glee. Wilfre is one of my absolute favorite villains of all time -- not just in gaming, but _all villains_ -- so i'm always excited to see him get the respect he deserves.

Quite honestly, when He came on screen, I was pleasantly surprised. I suggested Him a while ago, but I never imagined Him to be *NUMBER 1!* Like, HOLY CRAP! I also find it funny: All these master manipulators, ALL these hilarious country song homages, *ALL* these cartoony final bosses, and *A L L* of them lost... to this adorable, inky little gremlin! LMAO! 😂

I still remember actually screaming when I saw the 5th Cell logo. And that wasn’t even a fangirl squee kind… that was a legitimate scream of shock and excitement!

Fun fact: Chernabog was meant to be Ansem's monster form and the final boss, which would have made him even more fitting on this countdown.

I suggested Wilfre a while ago... But I didn't expect him to be NUMBER 1! Holy crap! Thank you for giving the Drawn to Life series some deserved attention! This game is one of the factors that made me the jolly nutcase artist I am today! :)

I would really think that a “Top 10 Scariest/Creepiest Bosses” or “Top 10 Scariest/Creepiest Enemies” would be a good pair of ideas for Halloween top 10s.

I liked Ansem and Xemnas in KH3. The fact that they were working for Xehanort, who showed no signs of them in his behavior, must've been quite the crisis of mortality. Both dealt with it in their own ways; Ansem sought out Subject X to repent, while Xemnas doubled down on the nastiness. It's why I think even with DDD Xemnas is compelling. From the start, he was created to die, restore Xehanort, and become just another vessel on the shelf. Like Roxas, Xemnas would never have recompleted like the other Nobodies; he'd just be meaninglessly subsumed into Xehanort's return. In 358's secret journals, he mentioned using Kingdom Hearts to become more than human. How I interpret that? More than one specific human; Xehanort.

That probably has to do with Xemnas having part of Terra's soul/mind within him. He's not just Xehanort's nobody, he's also Terra's because Terra's heart was still in his body when Xehanort possessed him. Only his mind/will/emotions became the Lingering Will, which ironically doomed him because of he still had his mind within his body to reason Aqua would have been able to exercise Xehanort's spirit and free the guardian/Terra's heart during the true final boss in BBS.

As not only a fan or Drawn to Life, but someone who was truly inspired by it… I actually SCREAMED when Wilfre was on the list …#1, in fact. Holy rapo… 🤯

I was ecstatic when I saw the 5th Cell logo, ‘cause I knew exactly who it was! So glad I suggested Wilfre, my favourite villain in gaming, from my favourite series!

Number 6 brings me VINDICATION, there’s a pretty great selection of devil bosses but Morsayati is an excellent choice. He’s no small fry in the story and his fight being a special permanent trial is well deserved.

Surprised not to see Lucifer of the Shin Megami Tensei series mentioned, being one of the eternal pillars of that long-running series just as much as YHVH. He's always there to try and draw you onto the path of Chaos with reasoned arguments, his most notable entry probably being the one secretly running most of the show in Nocturne, even being the secret final boss. However the series has others who have taken on similar roles to the Morning Star with gusto- Dagda from SMT 4A or Naoya from Devil Survivor.

considering the placement of that quote from Screwtape Letters, I was *sure* that Lucifer would be number one.

So with that Lou battle, what makes it a bit better is that apparently music is something that the devil is best at, as implied in Devil Went Down to Georgia and shown in Tenacious D: Pick of Destiny. So you're not just having a music battle with the devil to keep your soul. You're having to beat the devil at his own game and beat him at his best.

Man, I did not expect you to pull Drawn to Life out of the woodwork. I played the second game as a kid and even without full context, Wilfre stuck in my mind even long after I'd finished the game.

Not sure if he counts, but Rykard from Elden Ring is my favorite "devil" bossfight. He has some of the most metal af lore Fromsoftware has ever written, and probably one of the most disturbing yet simultaneously badass designs in gaming. Did I mention he can literally summon the forces of hell mid-fight too?

Loved the Screwtape Letters excerpt in the beginning. Amazing literature, and a genuine reference guide that I hope to use one day for portraying fiends in DND to avoid the "inherently and completely evil = idiot easily thwarted by the principles of good" trap that too many DMs (and media in general) fall for.

@@KororaPenguin Oh, that too, for certain, hence my point on it being a solid guide on running fiendish deception in a campaign- Lewis, as a Christian author in particular, did a spectacular job on exploring the mindset of a demon not only trying to tempt a good and pious man off the good path, but showing how a demon can be genuinely competent and smart enough at it to show that it takes actual mental and moral strength from the tempted to see past or otherwise resist their lies. Unfortunately, too many modern Christians lack the same wisdom that Lewis shows in the Screwtape Letters.

I have not heard Drawn to Life in such a long time. I loved both games and replayed them countless times on the DS. I’m honestly shocked it’s not talked about a lot in artist/gaming channels. You’d think a game based around doodling pixel art would be popular among artists Edit: HOLY [Cungadero] THERE WAS ANOTHER GAME?! I just found out there was a third game called Two Realms, released in 2020. Reviews are mixed, but it does continue where it left off in the second title

I was honestly surprised to see Wilfre, but gosh dang did it make me happy. Drawn to Life is a series I often go back to, replaying the both of the DS titles and the Wii version of the sequel (which is a whole different story than the DS, but is considered non-canon). I just love goofing off with them and just shutting my brain off. I will admit though, I can't seem to get myself to play Two Realms, I am really not digging the genre change from action platformer to puzzle platformer....

Eleven years… ELEVEN F(yay)ING YEARS, we Drawn to Life fans thought the raposa were gone! …Some probably still do after Two Realms, but I’m just content with being able to see the raposa thrive once more

Drawn to Life's 2 ending completely blind sided me and it took me a few days to get over it.

Not gonna lie, I was NOT expecting a character from a silly puzzle game to be an honorable mention here. Though I’m glad Dark Prince got mentioned, the dude’s actually hilarious at times in my opinion.

7: One of the best bosses in the game 10: Decent boss Nice list. I don´t know if Devil Kazuya from Tekken 7 counts as a devil boss, but it´s one of my fav devil bosses.

Seeing Dragalia on the list was a great surprise (kinda ironic that Satan from the game doesn't fit the bill).

I have Drawn to Life 2. Never beat it, never intended to. Did not expect this to be the full plot. Not mad I saw spoilers, but by goodness was I not expecting this game to be this level of wild in the story segments.

If you've ever seen the Cuphead Netflix series, The Devil is hilarious there as well.

I played the DS version of The Next Chapter game many years ago.

Nice to see Mega Satan at least mentioned, and barred from the list for the exact same reason I was thinking. If there were to be other picks I would consider Odio from Live a Live; a fallen hero who's hatred literally spreads across all time, and as an odd choice: Dark Matter from Kirby; manipulator, dark powers (obviously), a mirror of the protagonist (not literally) and one of the only big threats that keeps coming back to fight Kirby, not counting Dedede being used as a puppet, of course

If it isn't Zanza, it's gonna be Alpha from 3. I cannot look at the Xenoblade trilogy as three separate games anymore. More like one massive game that just keeps on giving.

Josh, you little devil, I was not expecting #1 to be pulled straight from my childhood soul.

Ngl, when I saw/heard you say 5th Cell, I popped off. Seeing a KZreadr I like talk about a childhood game I like, especially one that's not really talked about all that much, just really made me happy. And the fact it was #1 was just the cherry on top.

Kinda surprised that Gaunter O'Dimm didn't get a mention or even a cameo. That guy just gets more interesting with so much as his own trailer for a card-based spinoff. Not technically a boss fight since his challenge in Hearts of Stone is a riddle (outside the players expectation since they would normally expect and therefore prepare for combat), but a great villain.

I'm more surprised anything from SMT didn't even get so much as an honorable mention than the #1 spot.

I miss Drawn to Life, the first 2 games were amazing once they came together. It's just such a massive shame they murdered that series dead and danced on its corpse when they brought it back for a 3rd game, killing literally everything that made the first 2 games good.

If I had a nickel for every time Josh reawoke my childhood trauma of the Wormy episode from Spongebob by showing the close-up in one of his countdowns, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but I'm still mad that it happened twice.

I’m going to again put forth a proposition from Library of Ruina and suggest Pluto as a contender for this list. While he’s not technically a “devil”, he looks the part and has powers focused around magic contracts that offer dubious benefits with hidden costs. Pluto starts his fight by throwing out a set of five Contracts, one for each member of your party. You pick who gets which one, and if you desire it one person can take multiple contracts in order to free up other people. Each Contract gives a huge buff to whoever has it, but imposes equally crippling penalties if you violate the accompanying terms. There are two ways to deal with these: either build your team in line with his Contracts to dodge the penalties, or just drop them all on a few people who you expect to die. This works because of how the rest of the fight is designed. For the first Phase, Pluto summons copies of your team to fight you, forcing you to either prove you know how to use your characters, exploit the Contracts for an advantage, or hope you get lucky. Once all the copies are dead, you can finally start whittling away at Pluto’s shields. All the while, he’ll go through a cycle of locking one of your teammates in a force field, summoning a copy of them, and then swapping the health of the original and the copy. You can only free your trapped party members by hitting them until the field goes away, so the health swap can be a blessing in disguise. All the while, Pluto’s reserves of magic will gradually fall as long as you can Counter his attacks. Eventually, Pluto’s shields go down and you can take him out.

Dude, Raphael from Baldurs gate 3! That boss fight is genuinely insane! The music alone make the fight S tier. The devil that has been stalking you all game, trying to make a deal with you, and you finally face off against him. Suddenly, a powerful operatic voice blares. It is beautiful. Then, Raphael starts singing his own boss music! It is genuinely amazing

For me Ivo Shandor from Ghostbusters: The Video Game fits the Satanic archetype and his boss fight is quite fun. He is not only a behind the scenes villain in the game, but one that one that is staring you in the face for most of the game. Shandor's motivations are also interesting as while he initially wants to help Gozer destroy the world like the movie mentioned, after Gozer gets defeated a second time, he decides to become a diety of destruction himself. And he succeeds the team needs to cross the streams to stop him for good (thankfully this is in the Ghost World where the laws of physics are joke you tell friends at parties so nobody dies but Shandor himself).

I think Charlie Daniels was more mad about “Guitar Hero 3” being a game entrenched in rock culture, and he partly wrote “Devil Went Down” as a protest song against rock elements being implemented into country. I love the way the song was implemented into the game, too, but he does have a point.

Here’s hoping the Ink Demon from Bendy and the Ink Machine and Dark Revival shows up on the list or the very least an honorable mention.

I remember first beating the Devil for the first time in Cuphead at my buddies house, since he owned the game. It was 1:30 in the morning, his then pregnant wife was asleep and I kid you not, that was simultaneously the quietest and hardest I've ever celebrated defeating a boss in a game! Imagine silent cheering!

Asmodeus from Pony Island is very underrated. It's such a simple concept, you just gotta constantly keep your eyes on him and he will ask you questions to determine if you're still looking at him. Its simplicity is It's strength, as it makes a fun mind game trying not to get distracted as he does things like hide messages on his face, fake game crashes, or fake notification sounds. Plus mythology wise, it fits the theme. Asmodeus is commonly proposed as the "Lord of Lust" out of the seven deadly sins. The Prince of Lust wants you to keep your eyes on him. It's just a fun, well executed mind game that's thematically appropriate for mythology.

Love how you used Dante as an example of how NOT to make a bossfight enjoyable. He was the boss that made me realize that "Fiend" in SMT means trouble. I tried everything to find a weakness, but guess what, he resists or is immune to EVERYTHING!!!

Okay, uh, yeah, wasn't expecting the number 1 spot.

Wooo!!! DRAGALIA MENTIONED! I loved that game, and really hope Cygames and Nintendo do something with the IP in the future. Also, given the blatant mention of an upcoming Gods list, maybe Xenos the Progenitor will make the list. Also kinda surprised at no SMT entry. Catherine's close FWIH, but not exactly Lucifer or any of the other myriad Devils found in the series. Though YHVH is probably a shoe-in for Gods, only question being which fight? SMTII might be too old, SMTIV Apocalypse is awesome though I could see his dungeon docking points. Looking forward to it!

I don't really think he is. YHVH really isn't all that special, and while his fight is decent from a mechanical perspective it's not really "fighting God" levels of awesome. the likes of CHAKRAVARTIN, on the other hand...

The lack of Lucifer from SMT is pretty surprising. But then again, he's not a figure of evil in those games, so I guess that's why. More of an anarchist seeking freedom from the totalitarian rule of YHWH's control, and any other systems that get to dictate the rules of a universe. SMT 3/5 he's at his most interesting, tempting the player into destroying the Conception system because the very system itself is an issue that forces one's will upon everyone else unfairly, and it's technically just YHWH's way of keeping himself on the throne because this way the universe will reset itself without triggering the Mandala system. The said Mandala system is then the reason Lucifer stops caring about everything and simply seeks freedom from all systems, granting the player both his and YHWH's essence so what ever he decides to create will be freed from the Mandala system. He doesn't even care if the player chooses to bring YHWH back, because he's that done with everything. Maybe he saw YHWH as a victim of the Mandala system as well. In SMT 3 his boss fight is one of the best in the whole game, and it can be brutally hard if you're at a lower level or you're playing the Chronicle version on Hard. SMT 5's boss fight is pretty cool too on the True Neutral route.

Lucifer is still evil in SMT. Yaldabaoth may be just as bad most of the time, (primarily in the main universe, MT universe, and the SMT4 universe) but Lucifer is still an extremist and anarchism is a messed up idealolgy. His plan to destroy the universe in SMT3 is still a bad idea. Did you forgot that the conception wasn't even supposed to trigger in Nocturne? It was activated thousands of years too early by an insane cultist. What God ACTUALLY wants in that world is for the world to be restored so it can follow it's natural course, which you do in the freedom ending. The conception wasn't solely created so that God can remain in control, those are just the lies Lucifer tries to trick you with. It doesn't even make sense, since the conception is only supposed to happen when the world was already on the brink of collapse and humanity mostly done for and mainly serve as a reset to preserve humanity. The whole "reason" thing was a gift to give humanity the ability to shape the new world as they please, it's intent wasn't malevolent. God in SMT3 and SMT5 is actually pretty benevolent all things considered. Also in DeSu1. In most SMT games other than those three it's basically ""God" is actually a false god and the devil is just as bad. Go kick both of their asses." Neutral is almost always the best ending all of the time in those games, while in SMT5 it's Law and in DeSu it's also Law tied with Neutral. That's because law is naturally the best alignment when God is actually decent and no one can argue unless they're a god hating anti-theist. In SMT3 it's freedom/light neutral because all the reasons suck and you can't form your own because Lucifer screwed you over to groom you into becoming the arch fiend.

That's the funny thing about Lucifer, how can you be sure that he isn't evil? He is known as the Lord of Lies after all. He could be your friend, or he could just be stringing you along. And in Nocturne, no matter what ending you go for, Lucifer gets what he wanted. Either data on the use of the Magatama's, a middle finger to God, or if you follow the labyrinth, a new general. No matter which path you take, he wins. Though I will say, they kinda gutted his character in V.

yeah, hard disagree on Lucifer being at all interesting in V.

One I would add is Samael from Darksiders 2. And shameful that there isnt even a mention of Lucifer from Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne.

I mean, Dul'Mephistos, is by all accounts the DeFacto ruler of the Burning Hells. Sure, he may be co-ruling with his brothers. But when the High Heavens and the Burning Hells went about signing a treaty when it comes to Sancturary. It was the Angiris Council (representing the High Heavens) and Lord Mephisto (representing the Burning Hells) who made it. It tells you a lot about how much authority the Lord of Hatred possesses when it comes to the matters of the Burning Hells.

I know none of the Disgaea bosses and probably any of the god hand are gonna be on the list but if they are I will be happy.

Two come to mind that didn't make the list. The final boss of Star Ocean 3:Til the End of Time The setup, your universe is a game, created by higher dimensional beings(4-Ds), and this guy is literally your maker. His name? Luthor(Actually Lucifer, but they changed it). His mission? You have grown beyond the limits he put onto you, so now, he will end your universe. When it resists his angels(The executioners)? He'll draw you to him. When you prove resistant to his own power? He'll simply erase this simple ocean of stars and fill another with life. The final boss of Wild Arms 3 Her name, Beatrice, her function? An alternate existence, a living universe that has been trying to enter yours and replace it since the first humans came to Filgaia from world in another universe and attracted her attention by punching a whole in reality. Why is she worthy of the Devil Title? She starts her own false religion, slays the human made demons in her way and sucks out their souls, creates several monsters in religious themes, and has 10 heads(Forms) that must be fought to slay her. Best part, both of these characters WIN in the end. The universes you are fighting to protect are destroyed, and it's only via magitech power that your leads are able to bring them back into existence using the empty possibilities their destruction left behind.

From the first Overlord game : the overlord !! Spoilers ahead no seriously, spoiler ! "Hoh, you though I meant YOU ? NO ! I mean the REAL overlord !" If you just play the game, the character is paper thin, he literally shows up at the end from nowhere only to be defeated by you in an epic bossfight... However ! As he taunts thorough the fight, he's actually had a hand in the downfall of ALL the former heroes you defeated up until now, turned those who defeated him to selfishness and evil deeds with words alone ! Cursed the land they ruled and protected into their worst version possible and was very much primed to rule over it all over again, recovering from his initial defeat... On a second or even third playthrough, you can spot him during various cutscenes, leaving the scene as you enter it. He's never in focus, never pointed or aluded to, yet his influence reign supreme over the story ! and he's smart enough that you don't notice until he starts twisting the blade... Not much of a demon-like entity, but devilish to an art ;7

Athena looks very similar to one of Aizen's forms in Bleach, even the orb in her torso reminds me of the Hogyoku

That number 1 entry makes me GREATLY regret owning the Wii sequel to Drawn to Life instead of the DS one. I don’t need to play the DS game to tell you the Wii one wasn’t nearly as good. Certainly had none of the good Wilfre stuff.
