Top Seven Fateful New Testament Texts: It is Good Not to Touch a Woman (2)

In this new series I have gathered together a list of fateful New Testament passages that have been both understood and misunderstood over subsequent ages in ways that reinforce and foster incalculable harm to our lives. I did not try to order these into any kind of priority and I think that would be a difficult thing to determine. These "affirmations" have so direly affected so many billions of people over the past two thousand years I would not want to even attempt to put one above the other in terms of fateful impact. Keep in mind that this series is not about what any of these passages in fact mean, but rather how they have been understood and applied to our personal, social, civil, and spiritual lives with great harmful consequence and effect. The simple phrase--"The Bible tells me so" has justified and covered a multitude of sins!

As a person who has been recovering from the religious trauma of being in a fundamentalist bible/hyper Pentecostal church that saw sex in a really negative light, this was much needed. Marriage was seen as a "okay thing" but don't get too attached to your wife or kids or else you will take your attention away from God and you will go to hell because of that. As a young man in their mid 20s at the time wanting to date/marry it really messed me up alot. I love all the videos you put out and keep up the good work.

Wow wow wow! I've needed to hear this since I've began to try and (understand?) it through my family and their faith, our church. Though not married into a family, I feel as Ruth did, 'your God my God, your land mine, etc... and yet, I need these reassurances, something more to convict to, somehow. Mine owne soul to be also married to, by another; not just by tradition and acceptance, as such. Thank You thank you for this and all your great offerings, revelations... 🙏🏻🌎❤️

Saw sex in a negative light? Marriage was an ok thing? Don't get attached to wife and kids? Everything you are saying is anti Biblical. The truth is people reject Jesus because they love this world and not Him. They love sin and refuse to accept judgement is coming. So they reject what might have saved them. Any one without Christ will die the second death. Seek Him.while you can

What I understood is that Paul preferred celibacy as the best means of staying holy. The Roman Catholic church picking on this required their priest to use the celibate option as a means of staying holy. I used to oppose the idea of Roman Catholic style of priestly celibacy saying that it wasn't supported in the scriptures but today that has been corrected. Thank you Dr. Talbor for today's lecture. A very good episode especially for those who are believers and are confused about "celibacy". Indeed the command is appropriate contextually..for instance a nation getting ready to prepare for war....the young soldiers if possible would do better not to have to rip themself away from the young woman they were planning on marrying...or avoid "touching a woman" because if they do, they are then obligated to marry her and may be pressed of mind on a new baby coming, caring for their loved one etc not focusing and even trying to avoid the mission at hand. Now apart from such a circumstance, one could dispose of the "it is better not to touch a woman". This same advice is given to young missionaries today , where they are advised....serve the mission , then come back and to the marriage thing. Good episode. Now if a pre missionary can not control his impulse or is involved with a girl sexually and can not refrain "his love". That same missionary is advised , go ahead and get married. Not only that a missionary who is not able to refrain till after their mission, may even worse , commit fornication while on the mission. Context is everything and I think this point is now getting out and I appreciate high scholars like Tabor digging into this. Later this issue is abused by "orders" to prevent inheritances outside the order and also to focus the order on non family oriented things. imo of course however...very logical considering the cultural and spiritual encouragement of marriage, including many parables and allegories involving God and Man and Christ that have to do with marriage, not to mention "becoming one with the bride" is like becoming one with the bridegroom, further sanctifying marriage as a preferred state, outside of the context of impending "war" , "conflict" or purpose. After listening to more of the episode and I certainly will finish it, I see all these points are made obviously better than I could say. It is very refreshing especially because...I'm a believer lol. Peace.

*Best Genesis translation to English* I have heard other scholars admit that “sky and land” is what it says, but they read it the old way aloud. My only question is “Why translate Tehom?” Isn’t is a reference to a version of the primordial dragon of chaos? Also leaving it as Tehom would leave this connection to Enuma Elish explicit. You could still have a footnote that Tehom represented the sea.

As someone who did not grow up in the Christian tradition, when I finally started o study the New testament, this was one of a few recurring themes that struck me as peculiar in light of what I knew about Christians. Some are the other unexpected elements included: Jesus' exhortation for his followers to review their own family members and the rejection of his own family,, the explicit references to exorcism of demons, the degree to which the text vilifies Jews....

A common misconception is that ishshah comes from ish (linguistically). It does not. The doubled sh indicates the disappearance of the letter n. That's actually something that English has in common with Hebrew. In English, for instance, in+material becomes immaterial (the m doubles as the n disappears). In Hebrew, there's a different word for man (besides ish) which is enosh. In Hebrew, though, vowels are very slippery, especially when you're adding in an additional syllable. So, when you add the feminine ending ah, you've got an extra syllable that makes the e turn to i and the o turn into a shva. The dropped n becomes doubled (like in the English example) so that you have two sh in a row. Thus, ishshah is the feminine form of enosh, not of ish. If it were the feminine of ish, it would not have the doubled sh as it does.

Paul and the New Testament in general does not address the problem of involuntary celibacy. He says it is better to marry than to burn, but says nothing at all about what happens when you burn but there is no one suitable to marry. What has happened that instead of celibacy being seen as a gift, it is mandated on all those who are not married. Now, this is not as much of a problem when you have a culture where marriages are arranged at much younger ages than today, especially for women (note Paul's use of the word "girl" in 1 Cor 7:28), but in today's culture where marriage is often delayed and people are on their own in finding partners, it can be very difficult to find suitable, like-minded mates. One thing that is not talked about much is the number of older women who have never married within many congregations; they tend to be invisible, and because of passages like the ones quoted, are expected to be content with devoting their lives to Jesus while everyone else around them enjoys the "lesser" spiritual reward of marriage. Sometimes these women find themselves being patronized by their married/widowed sisters who fuss over them and praise them for remaining chaste and pure in a society that values neither; in other words, they become "pet virgins", and their very real needs for companionship and yes, even sex, are ignored. Other times they are told that they should be happy as they are because marriage is not always what it is cracked up to be (followed by some really inappropriate story about husbands not pulling their financial weight in the household or worse, ceasing to have sexual relations with their wives). With the end result that some of these women feel trapped in a role they did not create or seek out; if they do speak up and express how they really feel they are dismissed and told to stop being so bitter and negative and to turn to God. So yes, this concept has caused a lot of mischief in the church.

@@stephenluke2347 Yes, I find it so ironic that Christian leaders promise the moon to single people--wait until marriage, the sex will be so mind-blowing fantastic that it will be worth it, trust me, it can't possibly compare to sex outside of marriage (but how would one know that without any experience?)--and then, once the vows are said and the couple are alone together they find that they can't consummate the marriage due to physical reasons; or they do, and then one of the partners says, "that's it, I'm not doing that any more with you." Based on some of the things people have said to me, and based on what people ask advice columnists I'd say sexless marriages are much more common than one would think. The wonder is why these couples stay together for so long especially without the deprived partner straying.

This might be out f\of scope but if you could advise: 1 Corinthians 7:36-38: "But if any man think that he behaveth himself uncomely toward his virgin, if she pass the flower of her age, and need so require, let him do what he will, he sinneth not: let them marry." Is it reasonable to say that the first possible point of marriage would be at the age of puberty and not a 'fixed' age of 12? Your opinion would be helpful.

We are 'trees'. A woman (inside of us as a 'choice') has ALL the 'seeds'. This 'knowing' of God produces the 'fruits' which are the children, and offspring. This the 'virgin birth' is known. Paul WAS married, Ken (Johnson) explains and demonstrates this fact from a dead sea scroll document. By the way... grace and mercy are 'evil' that is used for 'good' as they are 'partiality' and something that is NOT supposed to be shown to man. Thus, saved by grace is being allowed to learn via our sins, bringing the teaching thru the rod, vs. blessing via the staff.

I get how this might be seen as a fateful text, but it is being overstating as its relevance is missed in Dr. Tabor’s reasoning. Paul’s discourse is in answer to a question, where he uses himself as the example. The need to validate oneself, especially if you do not conform to a norm, is part of normal human behaviour. Dr. Tabor is conflating the matters of Paul’s celibacy with his belief that the end was near. Paul was obviously celibate before he was confronted with the question he answers, and it would be a stretch to claim his celibacy resulted from his belief in impending doom. His suggestion that it doesn’t really matter whether you are celibate or not because the end is near is not connected to the reason he led a celibate life. According to the letter, he was celibate because he wanted to devote his life to serving God without distraction. But I can’t help notice that Paul being wrong seems to be the salient feature here, and that Dr. Tabor seems to be suffering from some sort of failed prophecy syndrome. The personal experience that resulted in Paul’s conversion is separate from his own beliefs that the end was near. And his own beliefs do nothing to weaken the truth in the Jesus story. Paul’s conversion does not imply he was remade perfect, or that he couldn’t be wrong about something. And Paul being wrong about something doesn’t make Jesus a liar. The point is Dr. Tabor is a non-believer, and he reads the scriptures as if they are simply the imagination of the people that wrote them. He believes for example that Mark used Isaiah to concoct a new story, and completely misses the possibility that Mark was actually reciting something that happened. About Paul being wrong, there is hardly anything new or surprising in it, and he wouldn’t be the first. Mark 12:24, are you not in error… And verse 27,… you are badly mistaken. And what should we make of scholars when they are wrong? For years scholars doubted the pool of Siloam even existed until it was discovered. Now scholars agree details given in the Bible ring true! But for the scholar who has stubbed his toe on the end-of-the-age question and when Jesus will return, my suggestion would be to start by first trying to correctly understand his message. Answering honestly why Jesus came, and what he said and meant might provide clues? Read just the following verses to get my summary on the why and what behind the Jesus story: Mark 12:29-31, Mark 10:5, Mark 7:8, Mark 7:13, Mark 11:17, and Mark 12:9. We may have the greatest thinkers exploring the deepest questions, but forgive me for asking then why scholars have become so lazy in using the gift they have been given to its full potential? Is Mark 13:30 referring to the generation of that day, or in the broader context of a new age? How certain are the scholars that they have interpreted the book of Daniel correctly? Are scholars certain about the 4 kingdoms ending with Antiochus? Have scholars overlooked the fact that we received the last prophet and his revelations in 610 CE? Did the vineyard change hands? Have the scholars ever considered that man himself has a role in all of this? Did Jesus ask that man give his faith blindly, or did he say he would perform great miracles so that the non-believers would believe? Have the scholars ever considered that Jesus’ message was as much a chance for man to decide his own fate as it was a chance at redemption? Has anyone ever considered what would have happened had Jesus been accepted as the Messiah instead of being crucified? Thy Kingdom come? Who is meant to do God’s will on earth as it is in heaven, God or man? Is it possible that man was given the chance to usher in the kingdom of God before an apocalypse does? Good teacher, please enlighten me…. What must I do to enter heaven?

I feel that you forget Gen. 3:16, where female sexuality is portraid as God's punishment for Eve's sin. In the extention of this, one could argue that under the new covenant, where God forgive our sins, women would no longer have to be slaves of their sexuality. That would fit quite well with what Paul teaches in 1. Corinthians.

Touching a woman is good. 😉. I suppose I get his frame of mind in writing those things. Obviously he really believed the end world come during his generation where heaven would return. Therefore, if such a thing was truly going to happen then why would I go searching for a wife or a girlfriend. The old things are passed away. Therefore the “good” factor of YHWH creating a woman for Adam no longer applies. I would also agree with the notion that single people, providing they are spiritual, are going to be more “in tune “ with the divine, whereas married couples have too many issues to contend with, children, jobs, mortgage, auto payments ETc. ultimately, this is a classic example of how twisted people can become by taking another’s word for things. One should never follow another man unless, unless there was divine articulate instructions from “God” that was made known unto all, and not private interpretation or revelation. After all, let’s not forget the private revelation that Jesus received during the dove flying around where it was only Jesus, and possibly John heard the voice, but no other heard anything.

If everyone was celebate then there would be no children and eventual extinction. More reason to doubt Jesus was God or son of God.

Paul is telling people not to be caught with their pants down when Jesus comes back. Don't let Jesus walk in on you when in coitis entanglement. Doesn't Jesus know that anyway? Also, why would people living in Corinth be in distress over what's happening in Palenstine, a long way off? Corinthians wouldn't know anything about Jews befoe the diaspora, i don't think.

Genesis is a story of rebuilding, the rebuilding of earth 4.5 billion years ago when the adversary's minions destroyed the first Garden of Eden

I agree Genesis is a story that is a guide to the soul to read, internalize and personify to learn and begin life in the material realm from a prior existence. Not sure how to arrive at at specific time stamp like you did, but once we understand and realize the Christ revelation in us individually, the eternal realms of the heavens are opened to us. We can then go into the heavens through the "Thura" and find rest for our soul. Then come back into this material realm, some bringing what we have seen and learned from the dimension of the spirit. Hopefully bringing your version of the gospel of Jesus Christ that you have experienced to a lost and hurting world that is in continual need of the grace of God and the renewal of life that Jesus Christ provides. Just a perspective.

@@sentinaludo1489 The material realm is a sort of grad school for souls, where they are tested by Lucifer's university of Arts and Sciences and Lilith's dens of sin, iniquity, and corruption. If you think this will ever be paradise, you haven't seen how the sons of God and daughters of men have reformed the highest heaven lately

@@theomnisthour6400 Interesting. I understand this dimension as a nursery for souls. Some are seeking ascension, some redemption, and some are remnants of greater beings that are trapped and have been banished from access to the higher heavens due to a rebellion against EL-Elyon. These are malevolent beings. Scripture is clear who these beings are, but most people don't understand how to recognize them or they think if don't believe in them they do not exist. And maybe ignorance is bliss here but as I understand it, there are not enough Archangels today that are of the order of Michael, like myself, to reveal the people who are the meat suits for these fallen celestial beings to push back against the forces of darkness. We are the killers in the realm of the spirit, and a greater reaping is underway. I have had several journeys into the lower realms of the heavens where I/we have been reaping dark souls off this planet. As one who has experienced physical death and a resurrection of sorts back into this realm, I have traveled into and interacted with the beings that inhabit the realms of the higher heavens and the lower heavens but I am not always able to be pro-active or engaged with what's going on. It is at times confusing being in these dimensions because I am young, but I do trust The Christ Spirit to teach and guide me in and through these realms. This is where real change occurs. And with EL-Elyon on our side, in the the body of Jesus Christ, this is the coming of the Kingdom of the Heavens upon the earth. And no ideology dogma, or man made conception or thought remains through the cycles of time. But His words remain, throughout all generations of His human creation So explain what you mean and understand as what the "Sons of God and Daughter's of men" have reformed the highest heavens into.

As any normal human being knows, the absence of sex creates a whole different kind of anxiety, which gets milked by the adversary's agents to work Tantric sex magic from sexual tension. Repressed desires only magnify childish narcissistic dreams, as anyone who's seen how most kids raised in strict religious supervision go wild when they go off to college. You cannot eliminate sin by hiding the urge. It will only manifest more strongly if repressed, exactly why so many priests and gurus become pedophile groomers, and the whole porn industry is targeted at normalizing deviant sexual behavior. Masturbation and fantasy are the least sinful way to indulge sexual desires, so long as kids are taught that acting on sinful masturbation fantasies often leads to mortal sin. If you can't control an addiction, you need to find a 12 step program and work on your darkness before it consumes you and invites demonic possession.
