Speaking of Soviet planes. You should do a video on the Antonov AN-218. An abandoned wide body plane that was supposed to take to the sky in 1994 but never made it because of severe economic conditions facing post USSR Ukraine and the closest thing we got was a wooden replica. Rumor has it that in 2014 it was dismantled and buried some where with the blueprints. There were three models the 100, the 300 which was the shortened body and the 400 an extended body. They even made pins and calendars for the 218.

  • @tacede

The USSR faced economic problems, not Ukraine. Ukraine has moved to independent status and it is easier for Russia to leave two planes to Ukraine after the collapse. Since most of the plants were located in Russia, which produced separate units for the AN-225. And almost most of them ceased to exist due to the same economic consequences. The 1st Aircraft remained in working order (it participated in the space program and then carried out cargo transportation in Ukraine) and the 2nd is still unfinished since 1991. Since the development of cockpit electronics panels and the final assembly in Kiev, Ukraine simply could not complete the construction of the second aircraft, much less build a new one. When all project documentation was stored in present-day Russia. Ask yourself a question. Why Ukraine has not built a single AN-225 in all 32 years of its independence. Given the fact that corruption in this country was worse than Russia.

@@tacede Uh, wot? The economic problems soviets had were nothing compared to the ukraine, where oligarchs stole everything that was not nailed down, there was zero investment into infrastructure, education, or any basic service, and corruption was insane. All you need to know is the fact Russia gave them Antonov, one of the biggest aero companies on the planet, for free, and they managed to squander it into the ground. Nothing was done, second AN was left unfinished even though they could sell or rent it for small fortune if it was flying, it was basically failed state living off looting and theft of resources Russia left them in 1991. That's why AN widebodies remained only a dream, it was easier to loot the carcass of company instead of doing anything productive with it, despite the fact that in competent hands Antonov could easily rival Airbus in quality...

For vehicles that were mass produced, sure let them sit and have parts salvaged, but projects like this I think it's much nicer to have them be somewhere like a museum where people can actually go see the thing, and in a state closer to being airworthy than rotting away somewhere it'll never be seen again. @@oliverlaw02 Yes, the Soviets put the first person in space, which isn't really accomplishing much. 'Space' is only about 100km away. Technically speaking, Yuri Gagarin never even got outside of Earth's upper atmosphere. The United States then put a man on the moon, something the Soviet Union never accomplished before collapsing like the house of cards it was, and something no country has ever accomplished since. Today, even China is ahead of Russia in terms of its achievments in space exploration.

And even here they did not remember the AJAX project. This is a machine translation if anything. Seriously, I only heard about AJAX twice, in the book by Maxim Kalashnikov "The Broken Sword of the Empire" written in 1996 and in some Russian military-historical program from the zero years, in my opinion it was called "military secret". That's it, this jet was never mentioned anywhere else. I don’t know, maybe Kalashnikov just invented it?... AJAX was supposed to fly at an altitude too high for air defense radars, but too low for missile defense radars. The unique movement system allowed him to accelerate to a speed of Mach 25 (I also asked again). The program was started in the 1980s and supposedly at least one prototype was even built. But then the Soviet Union collapsed, the project was closed and all the materials on it disappeared without a trace. I really hope the Russians never find them again.

The most interesting project, Shchukin's flying saucer, is not mentioned here. Russian abbreviation - ЭКИП. This is a flying wing with unique aerodynamics. The key points are the gas turbine engine and the air cushion. It does not need long hard-surfaced runways, and the cost of a flight is much lower, maybe several times lower. But also in comparison with current aircraft, the cruising speed is lower - about 700 km / h. This project is so promising economically that it could bury all modern commercial aviation - so it was shelved. Nobody wants air travel to be cheaper than road transport. The flying prototype is stored in the museum of the city of Chernogolovka, near Moscow. It's like a different reality of aviation - no hype, no super speeds, but simpler, cheaper, safer, greener, for everyone's daily use. After Schukin’s death, part of the understanding of how it works was lost, so 20 years ago the project became international and mostly dissolved somewhere between Russia, the USA and Europe, although you can find, for example, the name Vortex Cell 2050. (Google translate was here, pardon moi)
