Top Rock & Mineral Books

All of the books here would make an excellent addition to a library but if I was only going to pick two books from this list to get or check out it would be the Smithsonian Handbooks of Rocks & Minerals and Roadside Geology for the state that you live in.
Below are links to all the books mentioned in the video except the Roadside Geology books since there's so many of them and often the best deals on them seem to be used copies on Amazon and eBay.

That Smithsonian handbook was the first rock and mineral book I ever read back in elementary school!! there's so many awesome minerals in it!! We don't really have any handbooks on the area that I live in so having a book that helped identify my finds was awesome!! Once I found rockhounding groups on Facebook I was hooked, all the people I've met were so kind and helped me out in so many ways as far as identification, sharing spots, and even teaching how these minerals were formed. I think it's so awesome how any information we need the is at our fingertips now, you can learn just about anything you want to!!

I like your winter-months video ideas! It's in the 60s today and should be a high of 70 in a couple of days. The thing keeping me from going out right now is the localized flooding we had yesterday, but it'll drain soon enough.

Also, Peterson Guides can be a bit challenging to navigate. I have one for herpetology (my area of study in college) and we actually had to learn how to use them in one of my classes. I do love mine for herps, but mainly because I'm so used to it. :)

You will be very happy with the roadside geology book and the Petersons Guides can be a little complex but I think if someone spends some time with it the navigation of it gets easier.

Love the Roadside Geology books. They've been updated with current theories in geology. Nick Zentner just finished a 10 week free KZread class about the "Exotic Terranes" (yes, spelled that way) of the North Cascades and the Roadside Geology of Washington State was the text. You are tough to do your recording when it's cold!! Happy New Year!!

Yeah some of the older one have some dated theories in them for sure but they still have a value. I have tried to keep up with what Nick is doing but I'm kind of behind on his content at the moment.

Also Rocks and Minerals ( by state ) I just have New Mexico and Wyoming at this time and I found them to be helpful with pretty good directions to sites to hound. Hello again do you know any good books on dangerous rocks? I've been looking for one that helps you identify rocks that are dangerous or harmful to your health while cutting or handling. Thanks for your help

  • @CurrentlyRockhounding

I don't believe there is a book on that subject but a quick google search will often tell you if a mineral is toxic. As a general rule of thumb washing your hands, and only cutting with water after handling mystery minerals is a good practice.
