Calgary is shaping up very well. It is interesting to see how the infrastructure has improved at a better pace than it did during the oil boom and the years that followed as a consequence. From the standpoint of people who were not in the oil industry, one could argue things have gotten much better, with reasonable provincial debt levels and smart investments in infrastructure. For Albertans, sometimes you gotta spend a bit where it counts. I have encountered a significant amount of people from Ontario who love Calgary and believe it to be one undiscovered jem that is not overcrowded. The oil industry contributed a great deal to the province and to the city. However, I believe the money was squandered, there was little to show for it, and a lot was used for individual benefit. One oil and gas economics professor was telling me during the boom years that Alberta was not saving in their heritage fund for rainy days. That is talked about a lot to this day. A lot of oil people were just making silly money. Many are still trying to juggle and hold on to their oil wealth. I wish the directional change of the oil industry was a bit more gradual and less sudden. Alberta will be better off with slow economic diversification while the oil industry remains a big player. The oil industry spoiled Alberta a great deal. I think the oil industry also caused great inequity among those in the business, those benefiting from the royalties, and those not in the business. Trudeau is another story..

OK, the thing about the unpredictability of the weather: weather forecasting is amazingly accurate. If you consult the Weather Network etc, you have a pretty good idea of what it's going to be for the next week. Unfortunately, although you will be reasonably fore warned about thunderstorms, usually all you get about hail, is that it's a possibility. It's a total crap shoot whether you will get it. It's also usually very localised. Never the whole city. (Calgary is huge). I also used to get cracked fingers in the winter, when I worked in a warehouse. But I retired last year, and didn't have to use lotion once. I don't have a humidifier either, so I dunno.

It depends what kind of person you are. For me I don't like the dry/cold weather. It is super unpredictable. You do not get 4 distinct seasons most years. It can look like winter from October through May. The seasons change erratically. You can have spring be up to 8 weeks late or early. Its often very windy. I have chronic migrain issues from the random air pressure changes. The summers are not that warm. A few years ago I visited interior BC in April and to me it seemed like what we get in July. It was 20-30 degrees celcius almost every day which is our usual Summer in Calgary. The locals in BC said its always that warm in April. I couldnt believe it. . In Calgary area the growing season for gardeners is short, like 3 months. You get all kinds of hail too which is a frustrating wild card to have to deal with. Winters are awful. Not as much snow as other places but you can get stretches where it is -25 all the way down to -45 in some cases. I have literally had my shower pipes freeze before. There are usually stretches where it is warm too like around -5ish and sometimes even above zero. Like he said gravel on roads turns into lots of broken windshields. The weather changes a lot in winter and snow melts and then refreezes and then the roads become full of black ice. Driving in the winter is scary if you do not have a 4x4 with good winter tires. The drivers here are generally crazy. The roads in general are full of construction Living expenses here are also incredibly exorbident. Some love Calgary. I have lived here since 1998, but I am over it now. But I can see why some people like it. Its better than many other cities. But there are a lot of cons that eventually wear on you, mainly the winter driving and the nearly year round crap weather.

You are bouncing around a lot in terms of what you're saying. Calgary is the epicentre of Alberta. Canmore and Jasper are garbage towns filled with drug addicts, homeless people, and an over-abundance of trash service industry jobs. Sure, the areas are gorgeous, but it's only really viable if you are an extremely wealthy tourist or have some form of professional job in the area. Calgary, Edmonton, and cities in between offer far more in terms of "real employment opportunities" than Jasper, or the Bow Valley. But I understand what you're saying. Time I spent in Canmore was some of the WORST I've ever experienced, and that includes time I spent in Banff as well.

Great video! Calgary's climate is hard to categorize, like so many other (especially more coastal) cities, but it frustrates me when I hear winter defined by the first snowfall and the last snowfall (such as Sept, and then April - and therefore Winter is 8 months long). First, some facts...the "average" (I use that loosely here as it applies to Calgary) is still 16c for a high this time of year...two years ago on the exact same day, it was 28c in Calgary. Second, Calgary's climate is very much defined by it's proximity to the Rockies, the Pacific Ocean (in this case, it brought the moisture), and the amount of land to the north of which the Arctic air can push south. Calgary is about as far north as London, England (to compare, Toronto, is much further south, about the same as Nice, France). Aside from not being moderated by the ocean around it, it's elevation is also 3700-4000 ft. Unfortunately, those warmer days of 10-15c in Dec and January don't make news the same way that snow in Summer or Fall can. If you get out on the nice days, you would've experienced plenty of days last Winter between Dec and March of 10c or more...in fact, the warmest "Winter" month last year was actually January. Two records (or near records) were broken this year: Feb was not only the snowiest in history, but the second coldest Feb (the 6th coldest month) in Calgary's history (going back to the 1880s). It was also the longest stretch in the past 50+ years (36 days if I recall) of not getting above freezing. The snow on Sept 29th was also the single snowiest day in September ever recorded. It'll be warmer again within a day or two to get out and enjoy Fall (it's already sunny, and snow is melting). I might just grab my snowboard and find a hill until it all melts. :-)
