I was seventeen, in the lower 6th form at secondary school. Started full time work in August '81, best years of my life, plenty of cash to enjoy everything life had to offer! Great memories! 🥰🤩🎼🎶🕺

The Human League looked 'so cool' with 'the best song' of the 80's.1981 a brilliant year for pop music!

What a great mixture of different types of music. I remember watching this episode, while I was supposed to be doing my homework! Duran Duran blew my mind.

I was born in March 1963 and liked music from 1968 through to 1982. Great tim😮es for music. I feel glad that lived through the best time in music. I doubt if Ed Sheeran will be played in 50 years times but records from the 70s and early 80s will be.

We can still laugh at Spurs 43 years on. On the musical side Teardrop Explodes were immense.

Wow! I’ve never seen this music video of Smokey Robinson before, but I always loved that song. Amazing to have The Human League, Duran Duran, and The Teardrop Explodes all live on the same episode!! North America experienced a year or two delay in really embracing these synth-pop groups. The Blitz Club had already closed by the time this was aired.

@@80sandretrogubbins25 Yes, that’s true; we still had a strong bond to Britain within recent living memory in the early 1980s before the States started to really dominate our culture by the end of the decade. I wonder whether there were really as many punk rockers and New Romantic influenced New Wavers with regard to style in American high schools as there were in mine (Edmonton, Alberta).

All of Kim Wilde’s singles should have been number one!

Some decent music here.

Careless Memories by Duran Duran was the best record that they EVER made imo. I wish that they had gone down this route instead of opting for the gloss and manufactured sounds that they went on to produce.

I think that it was Nick Rhodes's influence. He hated anything that sounded too "rockist" and probably took the band in that sophisticated and glossy direction.

Ah Feargul Sharkey before he grew up and played Mrs Brown.

What a great year to be 14! I bought Positive Touch on the strength of ‘It’s Gonna Happen’ and the glorious ‘Julie Ocean’. Back then, artists seemed to pack so much into their records, like the horn break in the ‘Tones song - like a completely different piece of music. I was also a MASSIVE Teardrops fan, and a pleasant and welcome surprise to see them sporting their Liverpool style for the world to follow! Duran Duran have their own ideas about how young men should dress - interesting to see which styles have persevered over the decades. I first hear ‘Sound of the Crowd’ while on holiday in Wales - the synth sound blew me away (all dance music has a debt to this) but it was the bizarre chorus that grabbed my attention. It’s a pity they chose a poppier direction rather than the punkier elements of their early lineup. The major difference back then though was how diverse the charts were - if you were cool about it, you would find something to enjoy in Smokey Robinson’s music as much as XTC or Wire or Buggles or Grandmaster Flash, the Specials, even Shakey and Chas’n’Dave’s folky singalongs (Ossie’s moment was always a crowd pleaser). And how much of it was produced in an independent spirit - driven by small business rather than global corporations. There are hints of the world to come - Kim Wilde is wonderful to look at, but the song sounds like a committee wrote it - she needed strong songs like Kids in America. And ‘Stars on 45’, in which past hits are recycled into a convenient, dance-friendly four minutes, should have been a warning to us all 😊

i was only 8 but who knew for next 9yrs liverpool would dominate football, liverpool come out with their own song in 80s called NEVER GONNA STOP.

I remember in 1981 streetlights still had time-switches, Horstmann, Venner or Sangamo.

I remember Smoky Robinson being no. 1.

Kim Wilde was my "synth-pop" crush: still love her.......BTW: funny the way "Ossie" Ardiles mispronounces "Tottingham" (song by Chas and Dave)

Wrong. It's about a boy run over by a van whose driver laughed as he sped away and that boy's desire for revenge by loosening all the van's wheel nuts. Similarly, Oliver Zarmy was another boy run over (twice, by the same car) but went on to be a successful darts pro.

You can tell the 60s and 70s had passed. A shedload of awful, poor quality dross music. I bet DLT was glad to get out in the end.

Much of this is meh. Best is probably at the end or Bette Davis Eyes. It's likely that all those making a claim that 78-82 was some golden era in music were born around 1965, or shortly thereafter.

Wtf. The chart countdown stopped at no. 3 and they didn't show clips from no. 2 Shakin Stevens and no. 1 Adam and the Ants.

The music was shit in 1981 never realised it was so bad
