I 25% agree and 75% disagree. The 25% comes from the fact that, as far as sequels go, it was reasonably good. The 75% disagree comes from the fact that this film couldn't have been more different to its 80's predecessor. Once you get past the opening music and carrier scenes, the tone of the film is completely different. It is not 80s AT ALL!!!!! Its a love letter to ageing, and partly a love letter to planes. Unless you're a guy in their 50s who was young and impressional and has watched the original countless times, you won't appreciate how non-80s this sequel actually was.

When I was about 6 and saw Goose died, that was my first heartbreak watching a movie. I shedded a tear the other day because I finally saw Maverick and Goose go on an adventure but Goose was living it through his son. "My dad would've done the same thing for you." 🐓 That got to me. It showed that Goose was still there in spirit. He would've saved Mav's life no matter what and vice-versa if things went bad. That's love, man. Imagine how great Dead Reckoning is going to be? The Infinity War/Endgame to MI. Tom will work hard to make MI7 as awesome as possible just like he did to the franchise that launched him literally into the next stratosphere in '86. ✈

That was a requirement for Tom Cruise - that they should be able to film with real jets just like in the first film, otherwise, it would never feel like Top Gun.The U.S. Military since the 90s always says no to such requests. But they made an exception because 1. It's Tom Cruise and 2. the first Top Gun film is still the best recruitment material of the U.S. Navy. And with the way Top Gun Maverick turned out, the U.S. Navy has a new movie to milk and get people to enlist.

Just a few things Joe, Jennifer Connelly's character is mention only once in the original Top Gun as being the Admiral's Daughter he was dating and got caught and punished by it. The second is that the reason Rooster hates Maverick at the beginning of the film is because Maverick pulled his papers from entering the Navy and that set him back 4 years in his career because her mother didn't want him to fly for the Navy and last one the maneuver OJ was referring to is not a maneuver is a term called Buzzing the tower, where a jet passes by the control tower too close and because of it makes the tower have a mini earthquake that resembles a buzzing because of the windows. I think the issue is that in all these subversion attempts, they fail to realize why we like certain characters. For many, these 80s and 90s heroes were part of our formative years. They gave us lessons that we took into adulthood. So being told that our teachers were wrong could of course feel like either someone doesn't get it or is trying to tear our heroes down. In this case, Maverick coming back as a Top Gun instructor is almost a meta-affirmation that not only did we learn the right lessons but that there's more to learn than before, and not even he is done learning.

Jennifer Connelly's character was mentioned in the original Top Gun. In the bar scene just before Maverick and everyone join Goose in singing "Great Balls of Fire", Meg Ryan's character Carol says to Maverick in front of Charlie, "he told me all about the time you went ballistic with Penny Benjamin." Very diverse cast, including a chick being “the best of the best,” when 1) requirements for women are lowered in order to join the military, and 2) there’s no way a chick’s heart and lungs are strong enough to pull through amount of G-forces in the mission in this film like a man’s can. When one looks at what the stats of fighter pilots are IRL in the US, it’s _VERY_ homogeneous. This cast is therefore a joke.

It was a 10/10 for me, ironically it subverted my expectations by sticking to a classic formula. SPOILERS AHEAD: I found the final 30 minutes so intensely emotional as the film set up the expectation we were saying goodbye to maverick. I was sure he was going to die. The film played with that tension in a phenomenal way and then that ending just left me so hopeful in a manner no film has done in a long time. Truly a masterpiece in story telling, proves expectations don't always need to be subverted and that classic stories still work, maybe more so than ever before.

One of the most memorable movie I watched with my dad growing up, he passed away when in was 19 and this just brought back so many good memories ❤️ My wife caught me tearing up a few times too lol. My dad and i used to go around in the house quoting "talk to me goose!" And continue with our day. 10/10 ! ! !

@@OnnSight Russia sells military vehicles and equipment around the world. India's airforce has alot of Russian Sukhoi fighters and were supposed to help fund development of the SU-57 in exchange for getting their own variant but they backed out. So Russia developed in house and as far as we know, no plans to export, that's what the new SU-75 is for but that thing probably won't be as good as the F-35, especially since their cost estimate is less than current 4th gen fighters while the F-35 is much, much more expensive. Meaning their price is greatly downplayed or it's capabilities won't be as good as claimed.

@@74camarolt No, those were definitely CGI. Like I said, Russia has all of them, last estimate I heard online was around 9-10 operational planes but possibly a few more but considering tensions with Russia in recent years... Also, the production team said they used all or near all practical planes is flat out a lie. They certainly used real planes but alot of the super close aerial maneuvering shots, like Maverick going vertical between two F-18's flying wingtip to wingtip (which they don't do IRL tactical training or in actual combat, that's Blue Angels stuff), Maverick's maneuver violated sooo many flight regs. Yes I know, he's a Maverick. IRL he'd have been thrown out of the Navy in Flight School.

Finally Hollywood learned its lessons, you can make a great sequel without a crappy remake or reboot. The only thing missing from Top Gun Maverick was Top Gun 2 with the 2 on the title. But I am excited about the 1980's Top Gun classic having an amazing sequel.

I also like how the villain of the story is ambiguous, I really couldn't tell what country the villains are from which is great as it won't offend anybody and this lets the audience fill in the gaps to assume who the villains are. To me the villains are the terrorist organization Cobra from G.I. Joe haha.

Just fyi, Jennifer Connolly is Penny Benjamin who was mentioned in the first Top Gun but not shown when Maverick and Goose are getting barked at and they say Maverick messed around with the Admiral's daughter. Later on, in the piano scene in original Top Gun, Goose's Wife mentions how Maverick went ballistic with Penny Banjamin (which is the Admiral's daughter and in Top Gun Maverick is played by Jennifer).

To be perfectly honest, The first Top Gun in 1986 put me over the edge about Fighter Jets and being a Flyboy, it made me so enthused about the Military, I joined the Air Force out of High School in 1990. This one I've been waiting with baited breathe on pins and needles literally harassing Tom Cruise every year for the last 10 yrs to come out with this. I avoid all reviews, all write ups all spoilers all feedback and all youtube videos on purpose on these types of films that hold a special place in my heart on purpose. It was good, not great, it lacked a lot of disconnect between training and the final mission. But then again so did the Original but not as much. I felt like this was a way for Pete Mitchell (Spoiler alert) to feel redeemed for what happened to Goose because he blamed himself so much and he could relive the bond they had through his disgruntled son, Rooster! Also the love story was horrible, No build up to them hopping in bed together, it just all of a sudden is upon you. Overall I give it like 3.5 stars or a solid 7 on a scale of 10. I think because the Millennials and Gen Z aren't used to the type of quality films we are bombarded with in the 80's and even the 90's this is their first 'taste' of what it's like with an action film /romance/comedy like this. So they are over hyped on it because it is unlike anything out now... So um yeah its was good not great..the fighter pilot scenes were a literal recreation of Fire Fox and Star Wars where they have to hit the target.. not too creative there! lol

Only thing that always made me cringe about top gun and even this on is the "targeting reticule" on the missiles. I mean they're firing IR missiles which in an F18 could shot off bore using helmet sights AND they don't cause a missile lock tone on the other end cause they're IR missiles not radar. Also, the gun radar lock is partially true, but guns do not have a gimbal, they're fixed mounted. When a plane is locked up on HMCS or radar (vertical or bore mode), a secondary gun reticle is shown where the nose of the aircraft needs to be pointed in order for the rounds to intercept the target according to it's aspect, trajectory and speed. It would make for an even more tense visual aid than the generic "lock on" (and it's not even how US radars look, work or lock on). Almost as annoying as when in top gun , Maverick always switches the tomcats weapon selector to PH/SP mode to fire a sidewinder.... Even though he already has tone. But that's getting way too specific on movie details that's meant to be entertaining not an accurate representation. Awesome movie either way.

Heck I got to witness Deon Sanders play football, Michael Jordan twice in person, and the rise of great movie stars such as Tom Cruise, Sly stallone, and Arnold. I'm not saying any of this to brag or virtue signal, It just was an incredible time to be alive...
