A playthrough of Kemco's 1993 racing game for the Super Nintendo, Top Gear 2.
Played through on the championship difficulty level.
The original Top Gear was one of my favorite racers on the SNES, so I remember being pretty excited when this one was released.
The Top Gear series was a spin-off of Gremlin's iconic Lotus series for the Amiga, which was known for its fast and smooth graphics, arcade-style gameplay, and some wicked music. The first Top Gear, exclusive to the SNES, changed the structure of the Lotus titles a bit, but it nailed all of the things that had made Lotus such a hit.
Top Gear 2 (also available on the Sega Genesis and the Amiga) does much the same. Though some further changes have been made, the spirit and the speed of Lotus and Top Gear has been well preserved here.
There are sixty-four tracks spanning 16 countries to tackle here, and there's a huge amount of variety between them. Some are short loops with wide open lanes, while others are sprawling collections of hairpin turns and choke points, and now the weather plays an active role, too: snow, rain, and fog all interfere with visibility and your car's handling.
Instead of choosing from the original's four prebuilt cars, Top Gear 2 also now allows you to tweak your car however you see fit with your winnings from each race. You can upgrade the engine, gear box, tires, nitro capabilities, armor - there are a lot of options, and experimenting with which to buy and when adds nicely overall to the game's replayability. The game also now features some simple damage modeling, so it's usually wise to not bash into everything in sight!
And for everyone that loved Top Gear's red car but hated its need to constantly refuel, rest easy. There are no pit-stops in Top Gear 2.
The graphics have seen a solid upgrade, too. The game runs more smoothly than three first Top Gear did, and the single player mode is no longer a split-screen affair, so you get a better overall view of the action. The two-player simultaneous mode returns with its use of horizontal split, but the game manages to keep up with the action just fine, and visibility is rarely an issue.
The sequel also occasionally throws in a few primitive 3D elements to keep things visually interesting. A few of the races feature short segments of track that are lined by solid walls, and while the effect is crude and entirely superfluous, it does make for a couple of "oh wow, that's neat" moments.
The music is, in my opinion, a bit of a down-shift, though. It's still excellent, but it lacks the amazing catchiness of Barry Leitche's themes in the first game, and it sounds better on the (otherwise fairly poor) Amiga port.
If you liked Top Gear or Lotus, there's a lot more to like here. Top Gear 2 isnt for anyone looking for a realistic simulation - it focuses on being a fast and fun arcade-like experience, and it succeeds admirably.

I lived in Iceland 🇮🇸. When this game came out 1993. An yes 👍it was a great game back then.
Top Gear was one of the best racing games to hit the SNES, and its direct sequel didn't disappoint. If it's fast, arcade-style action you want, Top Gear 2 nails it.

I agree! The graphics of this SNES game along with gameplay was incredible. This particular game made me think of NES Rad Racer with much enhanced graphics. The soundtrack was such a nice bonus. Such an underrated car racing game and it was better than the GENESIS version which had no soundtrack. My overall take of the SNES one of my most favorite video game consoles. Here are some very underrated SNES games that are just as great as later released games or the newer games of today from consoles like the Switch. SNES car racing: Top Gear 2, Top Gear 3000, Rock N Roll Racing, Super Mario Kart and F-Zero SNES action adventure / rpg: Yoshi's Island, Super Metroid, Judge Dredd, Super Mario RPG and Ultimate MK3. SNES realistic sports games: Frank Thomas - Big Hurt Baseball, NBA Give N Go, Brunswick World Tournament (bowling), Championship Pool and Side Pocket. SNES TV and word games: Wordtris, Wheel Of Fortune, Family Feud and Monopoly. *Note: Yoshi's Island of the SNES is a more detailed game than Yoshi's Story of the N64 (Yoshi has far more abilities and gameplay is longer in the SNES version vs. the N64 version). Yoshi's Island is also an equivalent to Paper Mario of the N64 and GameCube. There are people who believe that Super Metroid of the SNES is greater game than any Metroid Prime game.

This game was so addicting my brother and I made sure to always place first and second. The music, the locales, weather conditions, the challenges, the upgrades, everything made this game perfect! Thanks for the nostalgia overload
My life is complete! I was going crazy trying to figure out what game was it with the red car and the cool music that I would always try to hum but couldn’t cuz I was too young to remember but I knew if I came across it I would remember. I was born in 92 but this was my game! Wow so nostalgic!

This game is from 93, but I’m Brazil we usually get the consoles a little after. I’m born at 95 but this game made my childhood between mine 6 to 12 years. Amazing revolutionary game! Race games was never the same after this come out, that’s for sure
OMG my subconscious Just unlocked these long lost retro tunes from TG2 that were stuck in my head especially the music starting @ 11:05 25+ years like nothing..
I have very fond memories of playing this game with my brother in the basement in the couple years that preceded me entering the military. Such a simple time, and I wish I could go back.

40:10 this was my stage NO one could beat me on how fast I could hold my speed through this coarse. its was the music and the engine and when you saw that "LET"S GO" you knew it was go time xD. man the sheer hours playing this.

That game was even better than the latest GT Nowadays. Why? Because it was 1995, video games were still the revolutionary invention. Everybody was impressed with the fact you can control what you see in tv with a external controller. As a kid you play with your plastic little car, you make your own track on the dirt; then all of sudden someone tells you, you can control a car on tracks on your own tv, you can buy tires, change the color, and engine parts. That’s when you get in shock with those video games, that was the magic of the Firts time being able to control what you see in tv. Not the graphics, not the quality. Nobody cared about that. It was all fun.

I came to sf 1996 and played this entire game, upgraded to full max, oh and sf is the last track how nice 👌
That OST never gets old. Also if you drive stick compared to auto your car goes faster.

You know you can still get a brand new copy on Ebay! It's a reproduction but it's worth it. I once had all my favorite SNES games, sold them and recently got my entire SNES favorites collection back by purchasing reproduction copies from Ebay. I also got rid of my original SNES console but now I got a new SNES clone console. It's an HDMI SNES clone console by GamerZ Tek.

The 1st Top Gear is not good at all. The 2nd and 3rd Top Gear are equivalently great with awesome soundtracks to go along with them. I sold them both from my collection several years ago and recently got them back in my collection within the past few years. I love to buy my electronics new so I purchased reproductions from Ebay at a bargain price.

Jogo espetacular.
Half the time I turned this game on to play I ended up just leaving it on the main menu to play the music loud on my tv.
What is known about sound bug of this game? the engine sound must change when u change the engine but in 1 player mode dont do. When u play 2p mode car sound of player 1 is changed by p2 and p2 by 1, sounds are crossed.

Its literally not a bug its because the sound channel couldn't handheld the all the sound effect thats why its like bugging but the reality its not, for example when you scretch your tier the half part of the music effect was disabled also when you have finished the race the music is turn into normal again Luckily in their sequel TOP GEAR 3000 the developer could.optimized both of sfx and music thanks to dsp 4 power

@@monsterhunterdarksouls6229 is not that. The issue happens when u change the engine. Sound must change but in 1p mode never changes. In 2p mode engine sounds are crossed.

Slippery turns are a serious pain in the neck. I wished that there was a power up that allows you to smash through both bulky obstacles and doped oppoments for a short time. Even it's a good game, oppoment racers are pretty frantically selfish. Manual trasmissions allows you to drive faster but it's for experts only.

Hey NC, I have a another fun game request if you like to participate in. Now of course you have your hands full and still have my list of titles that you would like to complete on your list to accomplish first, but this game I think you would like to add, and I haven't seen it on your channel. It's called, "Stunt Car Racer". It was developed in 1989 and is a great title and similar to Hard Drivin. It was available on the Amiga, Atari ST, Commodore 64, Zx spectrum, Amstrad CPC, MS-DOS, and Windows. Personally the top three are on the Amiga, Atari ST, and C64...But the Amiga is considered the best version. Really fun title that I think you'll enjoy for sure.

4N85 BJR6 6HJ5 8#H65 RNM## Remember that password if you have trouble playing it legit (but I often use it for fun, then remove everything except armor and Nitro for slight extra boost). Nostalgia. Glad he's playing the RIGHT way, using Manual (nitro at first gear, then go to highest when full RPM for best acceleration). Beating Championship difficulty is a pain due to the rubberband AI. That glitch in 2:13:45, though rare, is very annoying. Your car gets damaged very quickly when this occurs, even with the best armor.
I wonder why they did give up the lambo thing?

rio de janeiro, I think hardest track in game. athens the first real hard and weird track. That cut down most players game over. I believe no one could win in first time play.

Not gonna lie, even though Top Gear 2 is rather good, I still largely prefer the first Top Gear by far, for many reasons: -obviously its music -its tracks design that made each and every track unique in its own way and each its own technicity -the tracks background and grass looked less flashy and fluorescent, less aggressive to the eye -the HUD looked dope -the *four* various car designs that looked awesome and rustling, you really want to drive them because they look super cool -the car engine noise, the "vroom" when going through the finish line poles -felt overall much more "serious championship like" and less cartoonish -360kph+ Cannibal FTW -just damn addictive Almost everything looks like a downgrade in Top Gear 2 for me, except those things: -the AI actively race instead of being mere mobile obstacles that zigzag to maximize the annoyance, but then they also tend to form massive clusters that are awfully difficult to overtake -the difficulty is a bit more balanced between the tracks -the sensation of speed is clearly there, even though the kph counter doesn't go as high as in the first game -painting the car I'd have also wished if they balanced the PIT stops better (by forcing the AI to pit as well for example) instead of just removing them altogether). Buying options for the car was a good idea, but poorly implemented: if you don't finish 1st in every race, the game's getting excessively difficult very fast, especially when there is very, very little room for crashes and error.
You say it doesn't disappoint, but I distinctly remember being disappointed in the sequel when I rented it back in the day. Looking at it again, though (after watching a replay of the original), I'm almost positive it's all down to the music. The game does look a lot better, and those pseudo-3D effects are nice. The rest of the environment looks really great, as well! I'd love to talk to my 17-yr-old self and find out what else I didn't like about it besides the lesser music.

I can't disagree with you there. The music definitely didn't live up to TG's. I thought it was a great game, but tbh, I'd rather play the original because of its music. There's the one tune that I really like - the one with the brassy hits - but all of the music in TG1 was top notch.
