    Sounds like the general young person problems 😂 "doesn't have 100 gauges and its not slammed" As a 21 yr old with a 91' Supra NA I think its nearly perfect!... my main gripes would agreeably be the engine but with correct maintenance and a bit of screaming here and there it ain't the end of the world 😂

    Sigh exactly, why would the dealer release a car that had a lower suspension. The car was built for the masses, all the important gauges are checked.

    I had the same problems with my climate controls when I first got my '89, but it's fixable. Basically you just have to remove the unit, then very carefully pry it apart to get to the internal mechanisms, then just clean the metal contact points for each button. Mine works like new now. There's a writeup and pics on the Supra Forums, just search for "climate controls" in the MKIII section. (BTW I tried posting this twice before but it wasn't showing up, so hopefully there won't be duplicates.)

  • @jdmlegent
    @jdmlegent4 жыл бұрын

    Hate? Let me see... No.1 The dashboard and gauge cluster is amazing and very fully optioned. And the lack of air/fuel gauge,etc is something cars don't get from factory. And the digital climate control is the best tech of the days and the buttons you showed that they don't click in and stay? Well they are push on buttons and the just give the contact order and the LED light above them shows what you have selected! Sorry, but you are wrong on that. No.2 Gas millage? It's a heavy GT car. It supposed to ger 19-23 mpg. And it is a used 30 years old car. You still can make a Service maintainance on some expendable parts like fuel or air filter which a clogged one can raise fuel consumption. No.3 Sound system? The A70 Supra has the best sound system for it's time. Cassette, radio, CD player with equalizer and Dolby surround with 2 speakers and 2 tweeters in front and rear, total 8. Now, you can easily obtain a newer head and speakers since the originals are quite old and over used. No.4 Ride Height? Come on dude. It's a stock 80's car. It's not going to be slammed to the ground. Get some coilovers and you can adjust the height to your likes, don't blame the stock oem suspension. No.5 The 7M is a good motor. If it was maintened properly and not upgraded or tuned, it will last long time at stock or bpu power levels, so there is no need to worry about that re-torque in the head gasket. And yes the JZ motors are way better since they are the newer performance Supra engines with twin Turbo, sequential, direct coil ignition, double cam sensors, crank sensor ,better head flow, plus 1mm valves vs the 7M, and many more.. Enjoy the car the way it is and don't do anything. Just a set of wheels and coilovers 😉

    @S D any beater car, i had a Mitsubishi carisma. Get a really common car, reliable with good mileage. Get used to drive with a stick, and because It is a beater you wont feel as bad when you scratch It, someone bumps in to you in parking lots, etc. 1 or 2 years later, if it is still running sell it. My second car was a miata, great car, SUPER reliable, SUPER easy to work on, a ton of space to work under the hood for a begginer and a load of tutorials on KZread to do EVERYTHING you need to do to the car so you dont have to go to the mechanic. Plus, they're cheap. Get a cheap nb with no rust and with the roll bar if you like miatas. But as a first car get something cheap and reliable! Not a 30 year old car that you wont even know if something is wrong because of inexperience, and could end Up with the engine failing or something. I know it is a cool car, and you wanna have a cool jdm Sports car, but you need to learn to walk before you run. Good luck Buddy, thats my recomendation.

    DUDE....I completely forgot about the hot start thing- it used to do this to me on occasion as well. The fix IIRC is to replace the fuel pressure regulator VSV (located at the bottom of the intake manifold). Basically the switching valve hangs up and vacuum isn't routed correctly to the FPR which screws up the residual fuel pressure in the rail after you shut the car off; it either lets the pressure bleed down and then the fuel vaporizes due to the heat, or the FPR is open and when it goes to prime the rail on a hot start, the fuel pressure just bleeds back to the tank. Either way, as you described, you have to give it gas and wait for it to clear up and run right and IT SUCKS! I'll try to see if I can find a link...only hitch as I recall is the VSV isn't made anymore so you either have to use another part no., go aftermarket and hack the wiring (sucks) or clean the VSV out, which is super easy but may only fix it 'temporarily'. Anyway, like I said, I'll try to find a link. As I recall, there was also a way to test if this is what's going on, might have been as simple as just pulling the vacuum hose off the FPR whenever it isn't wanting to start and see if that right there fixes it. As for the MPG, LOL. Although, I will say it's my recollection the first 1/3 of the tank always seems to go SUPER fast according to the gauge in comparison to the last 2/3. I always just chalked it up to one of the oddities of the car. I think my 92 does the same but it's been years since I've DD'd that one.

    Look up "mk3 starter relay mod" can be done in 20minutes and will drastically improve if not completely fix starting issues, hot and cold. I've done it on several mk3s, friends and my own. It's a "bandaid" perhaps... but a damn effective one

    My first car I bought out of high school was a white Supra MK3 from 1987, leather interior, removable roof. I bought it from some old dude that only drove it in the summer. Took a loan out on my own. Of course my dad thought that was a bad financial decision and told me if I was going to get a car to get something more economical and versatile. He was right, I learned, I wasn't in the right position to deal with a classic car right away, but it was fun as hell. It was at the same time the coolest and also must frustrating car to own. I learned a lot about car maintenance though. After a few years I was preparing to preventatively do the whole head gasket repair myself before it blew, but I ended up selling it to some street car guys that were going to baby it and told them what was up and what to watch out for. It was fun tearing it up on the highway at night, with my upgraded speakers and deck.

I also get the terminator think a lot so thank you 😂

    There smooth cars the head gasket is gonna fail on you no matter what na or boosted. If it's a manual I recommend getting a three row radiator. And your most likely gonna have to get the middle catalytic converter to pass smog. And egr valve acts out. Other than that the car is really solid. Body parts are really hard to come by you'll pay like 3 to 4 hundred dollars for the three piece taillights. Mechanical parts you should be good. If you get one dont sell it you'll regret it there a real head Turner slick looking car

    The 7mgte isn't garbage, if you know how to keep it maintained. The only issue is wrong torque value which has nothing to do with the engine but the engineers. Yes it isn't a 1j or 2j which were built as tuner engines i.e. tighter tolerances forged and hardened components. Your car looks new to mine lol. The main one i agree on is Fuel economy, god its shit, my 7M GE hasnt lete down yet, Headgasket has been torqued correctly and didnt have the same problem when warm, maybe a GTE problem but my biggest problem with mines Rear boot hinges, its a UK problem because our weather is shit, factory boot hinges were only 3mm steel for the unit of a boot, so since ive had my car, its never seen the boot open since the hinges were already gone, either need to get me a breaker A70, find some temporarily or get custom made ones to around 5 or 6mm. However my speakers are banging in my car and factory, Fuel economy is expected to be crap, and the buttons, idk but some of the relevant buttons in my car do stay in, not sure if thats a USDM spec thing But i absolutely adore my car including the dash, my dream car since childhood and all these little quirks imo make it unique (You can see a video of me cold starting my car on my channel, only ever uploaded one video)

    the problem was -- the 7M engine was designed with a head gasket made out of Asbestos material & yeah during a time that the world was realising Asbestos was a health hazard . . at the last minute Toyota changed to a non- asbestos composite head gasket . . but unfortunately the factory specs for head bolt torque were not properly updated or communicated & remained the same as for the original design Asbestos head gasket . . but the new composite material head gasket needed 20lbs or so more torque -----> hence the unfortunate 7M worldwide BHG problem . . but some people were across it ( eg ARP 👍 )

    Hey, would someone mind explaining why these cars get bad fuel economy? They are pretty aerodynamic, the frontal area is pretty small, the engine is only a 3.0l, and I believe it has Toyota’s variable induction system right? I don’t understand how a car like this could get such poor gas mileage? It even has an overdrive. Seriously, can someone explain the mileage? Thanks

  • @leoreister1558

    @leoreister1558

    3 жыл бұрын

    So from my experience of driving this thing almost everyday for a year now, it gets pretty good gas mileage if you drive it like a Prius and short shift. But if you drive it like I do which is let it get up to 4K every time before I shift and accelerating pretty hard whenever I feel like it then it’s a gas monster. Also I mostly drive this thing in the city. When I went to Tennessee in it and stayed a consistent 70mph, it probably got about 22mpg then.

  • @HungrySharkMaster

    @HungrySharkMaster

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@leoreister1558 that makes a bit more sense. If I short shift it every time like when it’s still cold, is there any power in the low end at all? I’m looking at a N/A mk3 and I just got so confused when I saw the estimated mpg. Also, since it’s only a 3.0l in a very slick and relatively small frontal area car, i thought that the highway mpg would be more around 27ish mpg, but I guess not. It’s not too big of a deal for me, but at the same time, who doesn’t like to save money on gas. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • @leoreister1558

    @leoreister1558

    3 жыл бұрын

    The n/a is slightly less efficient on mpg but it’s should do just fine. These engines are known to have very good low end torque so short shifting isn’t all that bad as long as you keep it above 2k. Also for some reason inline 6s are great engines and they’re so smooth but the gas mileage for pretty much any inline 6 is usually not that great. I hope this helps you

    @@leoreister1558 Thanks for the explanation! Here's one last question: I'm currently driving my moms old 2001 Hyundai Santa Fe V6. The Hyundai has a drag coefficient of .39cd, has a 2.7L v6, weighs about 3600lbs, and definitely has a bigger frontal area than the mk3, yet the mpg is the same if not better in the Hyundai. If I accelerated at the same speed as the Hyundai but in the mk3, would the fuel efficiency be better than the Hyundai? Thanks. And btw they both make close to the same power with a similar displacement and same cylinder count. (180ish hp for the Hyundai and 195ish hp for the Supra)

    Ye ok, but telling the world that this car has no after market support is just not true, no the big names dont,make,suff for these but that is the whole attraction about these cars, big names in the aftermarket equal big cost of modifying and owning one just look at all the stuff for A80s, on second thought if people think that way about the aftermarket for A70s then so be it, ittle keep the prices lower in that regard for me and all the other owners in the near future ive had my car since I was 18 and im in my mid thirties now, I can tell you that nothing is easy with these things, but that is what makes it suchban awsome underdog, when it whoops on some dudes MK4 or some GTR at your local track, all the other things are antics that can be fixed, and every car performance or other wise has its own. 😏
