Top Eight Best Pokemon Generations - rabbidluigi

Ойындар

I was very fortunate to get a new camera for Christmas from my lovely parents. If I didn't, I probably would've had to record myself on my phone, which would at least harken back to the first countdown I made where I recorded my voice on my phone at the time. I'm feeling all nostalgic all of a sudden.

Yeah, I think it should be given at least a year or two before most can judge it properly. We're still hot on the trails of the whole "Dexit" debacle, and much like the early judgement of the designs of gen 5, that can skew a lot of people's early perceptions of it.

Pyrostar This is exactly what happened with Gen 5 and (to an extent) Gen 6. Many people hated Gen 5 at launch and now crown it the best (which I think is totally justified), and Gen 6 was praised a fair amount when it came out but now everyone's mixed on it. I feel like Sword and Shield are going to be very similar. Most people's first experience was under the negative feeling of the National Dex controversy and everything related to it, so they were quick to tear it apart. Let's also consider that Sword and Shield will likely get a bug fix patch or two, similar to Gen 6 and 7. Not to mention Gen 8 has only just begun. Once the smoke has cleared a little, maybe Gen 8 will redeem itself a little more.

  • @lukestarford7608

While I normally would definitely agree since gen 5 had this at launch but people perception of the generation changed over time. As well as it being generally too earily ( this also happened with Gen 4 for the most part where it wasn’t until near end of gen 6 where gen 4 was crowned being the best generation by most of the community.) Gen 8 has way too much going against already due to the amount of problem the game has overall. -With the failed marketing to point where people turn to leak just for a reason to buy the game, leaks being welcomed as well. -Gamefreak miscommunications and well as lying to the community. -And SW/SH quality as Pokemon game being below bar for what series has set for most people. The only way they can fix this generation is by having the next new game be one of the best. No US/UM. Be B2/W2 but smash it out of the park. Deliver what they were supposed to give us in the first place. But even then this will only get them so far. If they remake Sinnoh in this generation. Then they have to do this right or else they pretty much gave themselves a death sentence from most Pokemon fans. If they get this two thing right. People perception on Gen 8 will change for the better. Over wise it won’t happen.

To be fair it kinda surprised me that you picked gen 6 and 7 to be as low as you did. Automatically gen 7 is in my top 3, and gen 6 was underwhelming, but they’re automatically better than gens 1-3. At the very least you admit that it’s your nostalgia that’s putting those gens above 6 and 7, which are actually *objectively* better than those gens in every way. Edit: actually I don’t think I would consider gen 6 better than gen 3. Lol, similar to my own list in some areas, but also very much different in others. #8: Gen 1 - nothing much to say here that Rabbidluigi didn't already say lol. I replayed them recently and just completely steamrolled my way through with a team full of really strong mons from that gen like Rhydon, Tauros and Zapdos. It was a fun time, but it is the gen I'd be less inclined to play more in the future. It really is just that broken lol. If I wanna replay Gen 1 I'd pick back up my old Fire Red cartridge and have an incredibly fun time doing that. Gotta give credit where it's due tho, these games did kickstart the whole franchise, so it does get some good appreciation from me. #7: Gen 2 - great sequel, introduced a lot of cool things and heavily improved on the formula that Gen 1 established, but it still, at least to me, feels kinda samey. It's another situation as Gen 1 where if I wanted to replay a Gen 2 game, I'd rather pick up Heart Gold over it just cuz of the better overall design Imo. I did finally get to recently play through a Gen 2 game, Crystal to be exact, and while I had a lot more fun than when I replayed Gen 1, it still felt a bit wonky to pick up. Idk how else to put it, guess I'm just not the biggest fan. But I did grind out the Mystery Egg you get in the Daycare for a random shiny and got to use a shiny Electabuzz in my playthrough, so that was honestly really cool. #6: Gen 6 - Yeah, I didn't like it. I loved the additions and this gen does hold a special place in my heart for being the gen that introduced me to the Competitive side of the games, but otherwise it just felt like a really quick gen to me. Like it was severely lacking in just about every aspect. It was missing the "magic" that a lot of the other gens had for me. Good music and great new pokemon tho. Noivern and Hawlucha are some fan favorites to me, and funny thing, I know Ash had both in the anime, but I never watched the anime. My love for those mons just came from my experiences and personal tastes lol. Also I love the Fairy type and, even tho it was a cool addition in Gen 6, I do think the future gens heavily improved upon it. #5: Gen 8 - I feel like since Gen 8 is still relatively new, I shouldn't put it too high on my list just yet. But right off the bat I can say it was a fun batch of games. Well designed and thought-out new mons, some cool additions to competitive like Room Service and the Heavy Duty Boots, it's now easier than ever to actually make mons battle ready for competitive, the gen overall to me just feels more appealing to the competitive player, which luckily I am, but also unluckily I do appreciate a good adventure in my Pokemon games, which this game half-ly delivered in my eyes. I didn't find myself interested in too much of the music compared to previous gens, the routes just felt incredibly linear without much actual exploration or secrets to be found in them, and the repetitiveness started to actually wear on me this gen, which I was surprised as even in Gen 7 I was still enjoying the battles and stuff. Could just be the return to the gym formula, but I didn't have as much fun this gen as previous gens. #4: Gen 3 - This, now this is my Nostalgia Boner Gen. I would consistently replay the ever loving shite out of Emerald and Fire Red as well as the spin-off XD: Gale of Darkness, and I loved every second of it. That said, when I take away the nostalgia glasses, I can admit the gen's shortcomings. Aqua and Magma are cool, but I do honestly find their end goals a bit stupid and ridiculous, it doesn't have my favorite batch of mons introduced to it (I love mons like Aggron, Minun, and Sceptile, but too many just don't really stand out to me), and honestly I remember Gen 3 more for Fire Red over the actual Gen 3 games in the end. Guess I don't have too much else to say. The additions to the formula were amazing, natures and abilities are awesome, but we still had to go one more generation before we got a proper Physical/Special split. #3: Gen 4 - This gen, god I love this gen.Mostly just Platinum and HG/SS, but I still love it. I loved the additions with now a fully implemented Physical/Special split, the new mons introduced helped to breathe new life into old, outdated mons with so many awesome evolutions, the music is great as always, this, plain and simple, was a good gen. I recently replayed Pearl version tho, and yeah I can agree, the game runs like molasses. It was a complete slog to push through honestly, and there were literally only 2 Fire types to choose from, either the starter Chimchar or a Ponyta, so the game was already horribly unbalanced in team options, there were just a lot of aggrivating problems that I feel should have gotten sorted out before initial release. Luckily we did get Platinum in the end which solved just about all the issues I had with D/P. Here's to hoping for an awesome eventual remake with the awesome Gen 8 graphics. #2: Gen 7 - Bite me. I have an honest-to-god love for Gen 7. And my love is really, really hard to explain, but I think in the end I can chalk it up to a mix between the shakeup of the old gym formula with the trials and island challenges, the new mons introduced alongside the new regional variants of old mons, an abundance of potential team members from previous gens (especially in USUM), the fact that USUM actually provided me with an actual, genuine challenge in a Pokemon game that I haven't experienced in years, and overall atmosphere. GOD DAMN do I love Alola's atmosphere. I could literally just stand in its many gorgeous routes and cities for hours on end and soak up the fun, vacation-esque, tropical feel that it all gives off. The music of this gen I thought was incredible, and I guess I might be in the minority here based on Rabbidluigi's thoughts of them, but I loved the return of Team Rocket with the new battle themes to old villains, just the fact that all the old villains made a return in some way, and the challenge they all presented, having their respective game's legendaries in their teams. I could go on and on as to why I really liked Gen 7, but I'm not gonna cuz I like the last gen more. #1: Gen 5 - Ok yeah, predictable. Everyone older Pokemon fan seems to be going back and actually giving appreciation to Gen 5 even tho upon initial release it was viewed at as the worst gen in existence. BUT NOT ME BABY AHAHA, I WAS A GEN 5 FANBOY EVER SINCE B/W! I really was tho lol. Gen 5 holds a huge place in my heart as one of my most nostalgic generations, and also one of the most polished generations from my memory. Everything just worked, from the story to the characters to the new Pokemon to the small edits to the battle system to the music, it all just worked and Imo came packaged in one of, if not THE definitive "Pokemon Experience", whatever you would consider that to be nowadays. Some of my absolute favorite Pokemon came from this gen, Krookodile, Darmanitan, Haxorus, my all-time favorite Golurk, agh just talking about it makes me wanna go boot up my old copy of White 2 and have another romp through Unova. Yah, that's it. Sorry if the comment was really long, but I honestly have SO MUCH to say when it comes to talking about all the Pokemon generations.

Uh, I think you may be confusing OG Gold/Silver/Crystal with HeartGold/SoulSilver. Suicune was the only one of the Box Legendaries from then to be incorporated in the story, and that was even separate from the A Plot. Ho-oh and Lugia were entirely separate from the Team Rocket stuff, and could be bypassed entirely without encountering them until the postgame. It was the remakes that actually put them in the story and made their captures necessary.

Gen 5 was polarizing with its pokemon design and the anime serving as a soft reboot of sorts but in the end of the day Black and white were good games with a fun story, a great antagonist and memorable gym leaders that actually did shit. I've HEARD the Gen 5 anime was a disaster, but I don't care in the slightest. If you ask me, they should have switched up the whole formula of the anime after the Japan-based regions were done, but I guess we'll be stuck with the same immortal 10-year-old with a Pikachu for the rest of the century and I certainly won't touch the series with a ten-foot-pole as long as that's the case.

I also think that it’s sort of impossible to rank the gens in any objective order given that what people like and dislike about each generation is *going* to depend on which one they played first. Like for me, the first two gens of pokemon rank at the bottom for me. I started with gen 3 but got hooked onto diamond and pearl, and it’s hard going back to a lack of abilities and a lack of a physical special split that makes me really not think highly of those two gens. But like you said, they do have good qualities! They’re just not for me, and I think it’s interesting to see these lists as not being just being an indication of the quality of each gens, but also as a tell to the time at which each person played them.

The problem with Gen 7 is also its greatest strength; it has a very good story, which encourages one to play the game from the beginning to fully appreciate the journey. While a pokemon game should have a lot of replayability due to the huge amount of roster customization, it is also a game with a single save file that people are imfamously reluctant to delete, and the postgame experience of the generation is sadly lacking. In other words, it is a decent RPG, but it is a sub-par "continuous Pokemon experience", and it saddens me that people cannot appreciate the game for what it is.

Generation 2 is the one that most impressed me. Back in the days of the original Gameboy Color, fitting a game as big as Pokemon Red and Blue on such limited hardware was super impressive already. But then Gen 2 comes along and adds 100 new Pokemon, has full color instead of a very limited pallet of the previous games, adds a day/night cycle that used a battery to track time IRL, as well as adds many improvements to the formula that have been taken for granted since (held items, gender and mating, etc). Additionally, it doubled the in-game map, allowing the player to return to Kanto after defeating the Elite Four of Johto, and showing us how time has changed the region in between games. Then Game Freak realized girls like to play video games too, and created the option for a female playable character in Crystal version. Gen 2 was HUGE for a Gameboy Color game, and it was extremely impressive. Since then, however, the series has kinda stagnated, with each release feeling rather samey. Each game feels the need to add gimmicks that are never used again in future titles, rather than actually evolving the formula, or doing something new. Now we have the first ever main Pokemon game on a home console, and it's so mediocre. It feels like Game Freak realized they can put minimal effort into their games, and people will still buy them, so they just ship them out as fast as they can.

XY could've used more postgame and some more challenge at points. They also paled in comparison to DS titles in certain departments, such as the quality of certain gimmicks and the story (mainly that gen 5 had a great story arc while I found gen 6's to be just ok). Although I love quite a few things about gen 6 (great Pokemon selections, shiny hunting methods, OSTs, eased grinding from the exp system changes and multiplayer features being greatly improved upon), I can agree on certain downsides of it. In my opinion, Gen 5 was saved by B2 & W2. Rabbidluigi mentioned a feeling where he needed to take a break from pokemon, that's what happened to me too, because of gen 4 probably, but the first gen 5 games put the nails on the coffin for me, and without realising it, I naturally stopped playing pokemon at Gen 5, missing on B2 and W2 and realising, when gen 6 was announced, that I never finished White (which I finally did and got myself back on pokemon before gen 6 released). I didn't think the gen 5 pokemons were bad, I found them pretty rad but I felt like it was pretty much the same as Gen 4, with some slight variants, hence me stopping pokemon naturally. The story was pretty interesting though and a bit more mature. Because of this, I wouldn't put Gen 5 so high, for me B1 & W1 should weight down the score a tad more (just as Diamond and Pearl weighted down Platinum), comparing to gen 2 and gen 3 who were major improvements to the series (I have the tendancy to include the remakes also while talking about Gen 2 and Gen 3). I would have put gen 5 in third position. The rest I pretty much agree. Of course I'm also blinded by nostalgia and personal opinion, Sapphire has long been my all time favorite, and AS swept the title. I salute the balls to place Gen 8 over Gen 1. I also agree, but it's probably an opinion that attracts spite.

I came into this video expecting Gen 5 to be pretty low on the list. It's become my favorite gen for mostly personal reasons. They was the first and only pokemon games that me and my whole friend group had and played at the same time, making this gen the only one where I really got to experience the social aspect of it. Also I've just grown to really love a lot of the designs. Seeing Gen 5 at number 1 was a very pleasant surprise for me. It make me happy to see these games get more positive attention nowadays.

@@amirgarcia547 The only aspect in which USUM were inferior to base game imo was the late game plot. Toning down Lusamine's insanity and cutting that Nihilego subplot just hurt Lillie's, Gladion's and Lusamine's character arcs which made the overall plot weaker. It really could have been placed in post game. also, I don't see how base game was better than usum aside from story. Like it had more difficult bosses, expanded Pokedex that should have been there in base, Mantine surf for easy BPs, and so on.

  • @amirgarcia547

Insert name here For me US/UM were inferior to Sun/Moon *because* of the story. It was one of the genuine highlights of Sun/Moon for me, and it overall just seemed like GF half-assed the narrative in order to release it only a year after the base game dropped, which was really disappointing for me since Platinum improved on both the gameplay *and* story. But with the story being a downgrade in Alola’s sister games, I sometimes struggle over which game I should recommend over the other, when I always recommend Platinum over Diamond/Pearl due to it being the definitive Sinnoh game in every aspect. It also doesn’t help that even before the climax, the Ultra Recon Squad are so badly incorporated into the story and so boring as characters that each scene with them just felt like a waste of time. Granted, even with its narrative missteps, I did still enjoy US/UM due to how much it added to the OG game’s gameplay-wise for the reasons you mentioned as well as the added post-game. Hell, it even gave us new Pokémon such as Poipole, Naganadel, Stakataka and Blacephalon, something that no “expansion game” in the past has *ever* done before.

Cartoon Critic Yeah, it‘s the exact same for me. It’s definitely not a game I’d play again anytime soon due to its slow pace, but for me a game only needs to give me good impressions in its first playthrough for me to fully enjoy it, as I don’t really replay many games in general unless they have multiple narratives, like in FE Three Houses or Undertale. And for me, my first playthrough with Moon was one the best experiences I’ve had in the series since then.

PMD earns its praise mostly from its story and excellent writing. The gameplay is hit or miss, and as it is a roguelike, RNG can screw you badly. And the postgame is a nightmare, with Red/Blue Rescue Team having a ridiculous number of 99 floor dungeons and Time/Darkness/Sky having the RNG fests that are Zero Isle South and Destiny Tower, among other nasty dungeons. (I don't think a single person enjoys having to bring Cresselia into Dark Crater) PMD has also sold only a fraction as much as the main series. They just have a very vocal fanbase.

My top 8 8: Gen VII, took too many steps back, and one quality I like in each generation is the spinoff qualities. gen VII is pretty much mobile exclusive. And I heavily dislike USUM and LGPE 7: Gen I: Exactly like milk: Essential for early life, but ages terribly 6: Gen VIII: Very hard to judge a gen that just started. From my thoughts so far, and trends of gen VII, mobile games will still dominate, but i liked SwoSh, way more than USUM and LGPE 5: Gen II: Has that nice layer of nostalgia, graphics that have a good sense of nostalgia and introduced more balance in the series, but I am not a fan of the bipolar difficulty curb 4: Gen VI: I liked the generation, and I find most replayable because the games are fast paced, no 20 hour tutorials, and so much selection to chose from, makes replays fun. Also last good generation of spinoffs before they went mobile crap 3: Gen IV: Top 3 super hard to choose from. IV introduced the physical special split that expanded the meta game seriously, first round at online, main downside is that DP runs like garbage. Least Platinum rose from the ashes. HGSS are good games, not my cup of tea but some great perks. And the spinoffs were at their peak, namly Explorers of Sky. I feel king of the spin-offs 2: Gen III: My first generation, it is super fun to play through, which has a refined layer of polish. Introduced the Orre games which was a great take at console main game. Before the physical special split, and I am not a huge fan of Hoenn, but it is great. 1: Gen V: Motherf***ing Black White 2: I feel is the best pokemon game in terms of pacing, story, balance [except for Politoed and Landorus; more talking main game], playability, and features that were abandoned. Join Avenue makes Festival Plaza look like a mobile ripoff of a game. PWT is the best dose of fan-service that isn't down your throat [Mega Charizard X,Y, Gigantamax Charizard and the copious gen I pandering, while PWT is an equal opportunity Panderer]. Spin-offs weren't as peak as Gen IV and III, but had some fun titles.

Gen 4 will always be my favorite, but I will admit that I am pretty nostalgia blind. It was the first gen I played, and I love the roster, the soundtrack, and the story. The slow speed of Diamond and Pearl never bothered me as kid, probably because I didn’t have much else to compare it to, but I sunk hundreds of hours into those games all the same. I loved the Underground and the post game, and I was deeply attached to a lot of the characters, especially Cynthia. It was the generation that first got me immersed in the wonderful world of Pokémon, and I honestly think Platinum is the best game in the franchise. I’d probably put gen 7 next, because it reminded me of the wonder and awe I experienced when playing Pokémon as a kid, had a great story and characters, and introduced my favorite Pokémon to the roster, which is Mimikyu. I became really emotionally attached to both the human characters and my team of Pokémon, and I felt like they were genuinely my friends, despite being just 1s and 0s displayed on a screen. Then I’d put gen 5, because it was the gen I spent the most time playing out of all of them. I actually managed to max out the play time on my copy of Pokémon Black with 999 hours on my save file, which is ridiculous if you think about it. I also became very invested in the deep moral implications of the story, and I really loved N, who is definitely one of the best human characters in all of Pokémon. After that, I’m not sure what order I’d put the generations in, because I really do like all of them to a certain extent.
