    7:25 Is this possible??????

  • @finnyr9330

    @finnyr9330

    4 жыл бұрын

    Absolutely! A high quality half-volley like this one requires a downward swing and making contact with the ball while the racket face is at a slightly closed/downward position. Most players tend to block half-volleys (no swing) or pop them up (face too vertical or open), usually both. Also, it is easier to pick it up low off the ground rather than catching it a foot or more off the ground because you are certain right where the ball will be. The bounce should be about where your feet are but not in front.

  • @Yungdil

    @Yungdil

    @@finnyr9330 downward swing? what lol

  • @finnyr9330

    @finnyr9330

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@Yungdil Just give it a try and you will see what I mean. As you drive the racket down the racket head will mimic a pendulum. You want to catch the ball a the right angle (slightly closed) so that the ball clears the net at a low trajectory. The swing is necessary to give the ball some zip. The key to executing this is not to try it in front of the body, rather beside it. That will ensure a more closed racket face. With a little practice you'll be able to do this consistently. It won't always be perfect like we saw this guy do, but effective. In fact, you will want to hit all your half-volleys this way. You'll never do it the old way again. You can find Federer doing this on many youtube videos if you want to see it in action.

  • @Yungdil

    @Yungdil

    4 жыл бұрын

    Finny R I’m a college tennis player lol. Why would you swing down ever on a ball that’s not an overhead or a serve

  • @finnyr9330

    @finnyr9330

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@Yungdil First, a serve or overhead is an upward swing. This is the reverse. You are driving the racket down (before contact) because that is where the ball is. Second, the reason you want a closed face at contact is that the ball will bounce upward off the racket face. Think of the racket face as a mirror which reflects the ball in a way which corresponds to the angle of incidence. (remember geometry class?) So while the racket face is slightly down, the ball right after the bounce is moving more vertical. So in essence, the face of the racket should bisect the incident and reflect angles. Exactly what angle will dependent the bounce. It's your job to read the bounce, position yourself beside the bounce and time your swing.The racket does the rest and your opponent applauds the shot.
