Nonius are horses that were bred in Hungary in the 19th century at the factory of King Joseph II of Habsburg in the town of Mezehegyes. Today, the vernier remains popular in Hungary, Romania, Serbia and Bulgaria as farm, draft, riding and sport horses.
The progenitor of the breed is considered the stallion Nonius Senior, who in 1816 was brought to Hungary as a trophy. The horse was not distinguished by either grace or beauty, but was very large and strong. At the beginning of the 19th century, the Mezehegyes factory worked for the army and did not really care about the thoroughbred horses - the cavalry needed strong horses of about the same height, powerful and hardy.
The descendants of Nonius with the admixture of the blood of the Norfolk Roadster, the English thoroughbred riding, Andalusian, Arabian, Turkish, Norman horses turned into strong and very beautiful horses, and by the end of the century the population of the Nonius breed numbered more than 12 thousand. Two dozen of the best representatives of the breed received large gold medals at the Paris World Exhibition (1878).
After the Second World War, the number of verniers, which were exported to almost all European countries before the war, declined sharply, and Hungarian horse breeding fell into decline. At the end of the 20th century, a national association of vernier breeders was created in Hungary in order to preserve and increase the population of this amazing breed. Today, the number of nonius is increasing and is about 600 mares.
Nonius are massive horses with a lean body structure, no more than 165 cm high. Horses of this breed are never of a light color, most often they are dark bay or black, sometimes with small white spots. They are distinguished by an elongated massive back and a powerful rounded croup. They have strong legs with solid large hooves. With prominent tendons. The mane is magnificent. The tail is set high, not too long.
The neck is muscular, long, slightly arched. The antique profile gives grace and nobility to a heavy head with elongated large and round eyes.
The Nonius is an ideal draft horse with a wide and light stride. They are active, hardy, good-natured, calm, intelligent and flexible.
