One thing that I like about Phantom is in most of their shows, they don't have all of those props and junk on the field. It's most music and motion!! I like that!

@@notvideosofothercorps6652 I mean to be fair, the props this past season were basically just platforms, they didn't do a whole lot with them. Only thing they did was move one of them forward at the very end. Now 2018 on the other hand is another story...

Totally agree. Music and motion is what it's all about and that spells Class and Sophistication .

I just wish more people knew about DCI, it is in my opinion one of the greatest expressions of art,music,and precision all rolled into one. Love DCI!!!!!!!!

I agree! It would be so cool if drum corps international was actually international, and we had a “country” corps from each participating country and we designate a city just like the Olympics.

One of my favorite things about it is the old-fashioned symmetrical drill that pays a big tribute to old drum corps especially back in the 70's.

I honestly didn't pay THAT kind of attention to the symmetry of the drill. When i am watching a drum corp performance, I pay attention more to the music than i do to the drill.

ApolyonTheSoulRender Watching it a second time, i notice the symmetry is more in the second half of that closer. what i noticed was the brass and guard were ALWAYS symmetrical. The drumline didn't become symmetrical until the last quarter of the closer.

Natheniel Becken Well, notice that he does not have a mic. It's much harder to stay in tune playing with that volume, since he has to carry the entire stadium by himself.

Into The Light = quintessential Phantom Regiment. So tasteful. Gives me goosebumps every time. I don't care where the show placed. It was one of the best closers of all times

Ben Murray I wish they would use the phantom kick (the kneeling down version) more often, no one else does it. Unless they are waiting for a closer worthy of its use.

I still fall for Into the Light. Was the first DCI show I've ever seen. Also the moment where I fell for Phantom. And the moment where I wanted to march Phantom. Sadly I will turn 21 this summer. Never made it.

I’m 73 and was in a Corp when I was 17. Always regretted not auditioning for the Regiment . My enjoyment now is watching them on KZread. Still raises the hair on the back of my neck listening to them. Go! Phantom Regiment!

I marched 89 and was on staff in 96. I can tell a lot of the people leaving comments are young. You guys seriously need to hunt around on youtube and watch the closers from 78, 83, 82... some of the older stuff. It was simply amazing. Not better or worse than the more recent shows, but certainly different. WAY more powerful hornlines with the G horns, but you can't really get any sense of that from watching video. You just had to be there to understand.

yes, I agree, I get the feeling that drum corps didn't even exist until the late 1990's. I was in PR in (19)75. Our show was pretty good even without dancing and theatrics.

Was it 83 or 84 they marched like 25 snares for 1812? I should remember... I was there in 84.

harmonic journey... just wow! i marched dci that year and got see them a few times. still makes me cry.

18:45 Gets me EVERYTIME

1996 was amazing. I was there in Orlando and the emotion that Phantom was able to generate that night is something I don't think I will ever experience during a drum corps show again. It was simply amazing.

My Years from 1943 and beyond, were involved with Drum-Corps. I'm grateful for all-of-It....

Into The Light has to be the most incredibly unique closer in existence. Would have loved to be a part of that!

1989 New World Symphony was and is my favorite of all from the Phantom Regiment. As an '89 Scout alumni, when we toured with them I couldn't help be mesmerized by this closer. The move at the end ... the classic triangle formation, drum break, and legs kick out ... pure awesome! There's a reason that move was duplicated so many times in subsequent years!

2010 Phantom is such an underrated show.

Their 1996 closer of Strostakovich's 5th gives me goosebumps and brings me soooo close to tears every time!

Oh, BTW, NO CORPS is as passionate or stirs passion like PR!!! SCV is a fairly close 2nd in this category though! IMHO

The clarity of the chord at 16:30 rivals that of even modern Carolina Crown. Jesus Chris it gives me chills every time I hear that.

The 1996 bass drums sound SO GOOD

Believe me, it was very difficult to make a top 8. I really wanted to put '78 and '91 in there.

I was marching with Cap Reg that summer. Didn’t know I was watching my future wife (whom I hadn’t met yet) perform her last show as a Phantomette!!!

Nothing will ever beat On Air for me. The last show I saw live, so incredible.

2014 was a really good finals year as well

I love the ending of the video where it has close ups of some of the members. I marched corps in the 70's. In every era you put in all your effort, and leave it all on that field! Nothing better than getting that standing ovation for that effort!

I did not march my Freshmen year of high school. That year, one of my friends showed me the video of Phantom's 03 show Harmonic Journey. My life was never the same. There was a passion that erupted and music LITERALLY changed my life around. Marching band added discipline and i developed a love for the art more than ever before.

I'm from an earlier time. Marched 1975 and 1976 with Guardsmen, a corps also from Illinois like Phantom. I wasn't sure I would like drum corps when I joined (really hard work!) But competing against Phantom got me hooked! The power of those horns, drums and great color guard even then, was fantastic. Guardsmen was a fine corps that made finals 3 or 4 times. Sadly, they are gone. I love all corps, but there is a special place in my heart for Phantom. I still have a phantom t shirt from 1991 that says "Phantom - the best reason to march drum corps.

‘96 Phantom will forever be one of my favorite shows and my favorite of all these closers. So good.

As a former Scout, I must admit you guys are pretty awesome. I love the Into The Light performance. I must have watched it at least a dozen times now.

Thank you for including On Air. It is perhaps the most under-rated of Phantom closers.

13:25 one of the greatest moments in low brass history. I love it.

Pure opinion. 5th place in percussion doesn't get you 1st place. Tons of people think Carolina crown should have won in 2015 and they basically would have if they didn't get 6th in percussion.

ThePhantasticFule you do realize the entire judging system of any music activity is purely an objective opinion made by “educated judges” it doesn’t matter who won first or second in 89’ people will still have their opinions,(phantom should have won but that’s my opinion)

As a classical music lover, Phantom Regiment is really one of my most favourite drum corps. They always play all classical music program.

I saw the PR for the first time in hs in 1987. I got hooked on drum corps because of their show. they made a tunnel and went in one end with dark pants and came out the other end with white pants. Wish I knew the year and could see it again.

The shot at 12:53 gives me goosebumps. Not sure what it is about it. But Phantom Regiment coming toward the home side blasting 1812 overture in one long line with a classic 1990s camera catching the shine of instruments and clean uniforms is just awesome! I would have loved to have seen that show live!

08 & 03 were both very difficult years.. there were so many good programs.. Though I'd say that 03 was severely underrated for them. I still go to PR when ever I want a 'pure' closer.. :D

Elsa's was a signature piece that just begged to be a closer, and I think they did an awesome job with it. Phantom simply epitomized what an awesome closer is/was -- too many instances where I can point out "baby throwing" moments!

Thank you for one of my new favorite DCI videos! I don't necessarily agree with your order (my 1&2 are probably On Air & Harmonic Journey, I thought both of those should've won it all in '03 & '07) but these are 8 GREAT Closers & it's very hard to rank them! I have been a HUGE Regiment fan ever since those upstarts from Northern Illinois, with those red capes, came to Murphysboro, IL 40+ years ago and took down my beloved Black Knights. They have been so strong in the 2000's that I almost forgot how great the 1812 Overture was in '92.....WELL DONE!!

I like your choices! Pretty fair and balanced, in my opinion. I kinda frowned when I saw the '92 closer as part of the list, but after I watched it, I remembered how good it actually was -- '92 was just a stinker year for them. I probably would have added 1993 and 2005 to the list to rebound off a top 10 choice list. Props to ya!

My school concert band did selections of The New World in out spring concert, and this completely blows us away

Been following phantom since highschool in the late 90s. I love that they are the only Corp to do classical music every year. Sad to see their all black unis go.

That hit in New World at 18:46 is just shear power. You feel that in your bones. Love this Corp to the moon and back!!!! But Spartacus certainly is deserving of Number one. Typical Phantom power, intensity and all out showmanship.

My high school is playing the closer from Harmonic Journey as our second movement, it's a great piece of music and should really be played more.

juliet and new world order are my personal favorites. something about the musical shaping and descending lines/features really stand out to me. and A+ for juliet’s story and how it still ties perfectly together with the impactful music
