ABOUT THE MOVIE
Disney and Pixar’s “Turning Red” introduces Mei Lee (voice of Rosalie Chiang), a confident, dorky 13-year-old torn between staying her mother’s dutiful daughter and the chaos of adolescence. Her protective, if not slightly overbearing mother, Ming (voice of Sandra Oh), is never far from her daughter-an unfortunate reality for the teenager. And as if changes to her interests, relationships and body weren’t enough, whenever she gets too excited (which is practically ALWAYS), she “poofs” into a giant red panda! Directed by Academy Award® winner Domee Shi (Pixar short “Bao”) and produced by Lindsey Collins “Turning Red releases on March 11, 2022.
According to “Turning Red” director Domee Shi, if you set a 13-year-old girl’s coming-of-age story in the early 2000s, it’s pretty much mandatory to include a boy band. “We needed our character Mei to be obsessed with something that her mom would not approve of,” said Shi. “Boy bands were the first step into the world of boys for a lot of girls that age. The guys were all super pretty, polished, soft and loving, and they had of way of bringing girls and their besties together. Plus, I thought it’d be really cool to create an animated boy band.”
Joining previously announced Rosalie Chiang and Sandra Oh, who lend their voices to Mei and her mother Ming, are Orion Lee as the voice of Mei’s dad, Jin, and Wai Ching Ho as the voice of Grandma. Mei’s tightknit group of friends are voiced by Ava Morse as Miriam, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan as Priya, and Hyein Park as Abby. Tristan Allerick Chen voices classmate Tyler, and Addie Chandler lends his voice to Mei’s secret crush Devon. Providing the harmonious voices of the members of 4*Town are Jordan Fisher, Grayson Villanueva, Josh Levi, Topher Ngo and Finneas O’Connell. Rounding out the voice cast are James Hong, Lori Tan Chinn, Lillian Lim, Mia Tagano, Sherry Cola, Sasha Roiz and Lily Sanfelippo.

i've noticed pixar movies are going into a new age of stories that are extremely personal to the people making the films. they may get more likely to be unrelateable to most but will still tell amazing stories which some can extremely relate to. i actually like the new age of pixar with the experimentation of art style and willingness to delve into topics that some people think younger kids shouldn't talk about (LGBTQ+ in Luca and female puberty in Turning Red).

@@beeeean The numbers 4 and 9 are both super unlucky in Japan. Four is pronounced "shi," which is the same pronunciation as death. Nine is pronounced "ku," which has the same pronunciation as agony or torture. This is actually the fault of Japanese stealing some of China's numbering systems, since Japan's 4 is "yon", not 'shi', and will be pronounced yon in certain circumstances. There's also liscence plates that have to be specifically requested (will not occur randomly) and are heavily discouraged. For example, 42 and 49 at the end of plates, which are linked to the words for "death (shini 死に)" and "to run over (shiku 轢く)". The full sequences 42-19, (proceeding to death 死に行く) and 42-56 (time to die 死に頃) are also restricted.

She run towards the bathroom. 2 kids there's one with the trumpet that falls to the other kid. Which is a female with short hair and blonde. Kinda look like Riley from inside out..I know this because I recognize that signature look of her.. The second one. I forgot.. but I do remember what part of the movie... I guess her second appearance was when Mei doing a little business in her school...she was the one who shove Tyler at the side....when his on the line.

Also a super deep cut easter egg that most would not have realized is that the skydome was the actual name for the stadium in Toronto from when the movie takes place, but has since been renamed to the Rogers Centre. People who grew up with it called the skydome still call it that today though even though it was renamed. Also many think that name 4town is a throwback to a Canadian boyband B44 who was popular during that era. Loved seeing my hometown in film though! I really appreciated all of the Canadian-isms in this movie and how authentic it is to the time period. Like the fact that the dollar bills look as they did during the turn of the century as opposed to the modern look.

There was a reference that is more specific to Chinese Canadians - the tv right after they showed Jin's cooking, was showing an ancient Chinese television drama presumably from TVB, a Hong Kong television station! As a Chinese Canadian myself, I definitely related to that scene where Mei and her mom were ranting about the television characters ahahaha

Here’s another one for you. When Mei and her mom are watching television, you can see the network logo which is based off of Hong Kong’s network “TVB”-the same network Tony Leung and Fala Chen (who played Shang-Chi’s parents) first debuted. The letters used in the logo are “SHI”-Domee’s last name.

Turning red’s message feels like a mix of Luca and Encanto. Exploring yourself and growing older and more independent comes from Luca and the intergenerational trauma of each daughter in turning red carrying the burden of trying to be perfect is inspired by Encanto.

  • @FlicksAndTheCity

    2 жыл бұрын

You're right, writer-director Domee Shi is really into anime and that influenced the film immensely, including those eyes. Shi has also said that animating the eyes that way in Turning Red felt perfect because the film's about an adolescent girl who's on an emotional rollercoaster, which is why in the video I mentioned both anime and adolescence when I talk about the eyes being animated like that. Hope that clears things up! :-)

In the intro of the movie, there is a shot where a teacher is in their office describing Mei at their desk, and on a bookshelf, you can see a white polar bear wearing a blue jersey with a maple leaf in the center, a clear reference to Carleton the bear, the mascot of the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League. There is also weirdly for a Canadian set movie, a poster for the 1980 Olympics, known as “the miracle on ice” (there is also a movie about it) where the USA beat the Soviet Union in the gold medal game. As a hockey fan I found these very interesting references to see in a pixar movie
