This is called micro-scrapping now. Some scrappers have the time, space- plus tools to do this. I think this is great. Very good info. Sewing machines look plastic but have an aluminum frame inside plus a motor. An angle grinder can be very dangerous so take a class on it, free on youtube. Better safe than sorry.

happy mlk day... oh wait, you're canadian... yep, pretty much what i find the most of, love those fans, the reason you find these items is they don't fit into your typical garbage can so they're always visible, always seeing vacuum handles sticking out... love those long ass cords. the vacs i find are almost always copper motors, it's washing machines and dryers that have aluminum windings... don't find many dehumidifiers which is weird since i'm in florida, i do get a lot of ceiling fans. still finding many old style t.v.'s... getting rid of the crt's (cathode-ray tubes) is a problem, the county won't take them (free) if they've been "stripped of their precious metals". so i have to pay for their disposal. as for checking to see if items work, only if i can use it, (i know there's more money in selling something) but like i told someone recently, i don't have the space to run my own "used amazon" warehouse", or the time to wait for buyers, etc. people get irked at the things i scrap, but i just don't have the room or time to run a 2nd business.

Depends on where you live I think and styles. A lot of the vacuums I find here are aluminum windings now. I say 65% of ones are copper I find. Either way, I still take them.

Tin man you are very thorough and you know your metal but you took apart the fan motor and forgot to tell us what the housing is. My yard says aluminum but sure seems like diecast zinc class to me. What do you think? I'm also wondering if they are worth taking apart or let it all go as electric motor. Would love to get some opinions on this since I have a few hundred piled up.

Noticed tiny turntable motors and tiny transformers on control boards nearly always soft unvarnised copper

QUESTIONS... So you know the thick "Copper Cup" inside the aluminum heatsink, of course you do, lol. Now is that considered Bare, #1 or, #2?. Also, what about the Copper strap you sometimes find around Copper windings, around the "Armatur"? And lastly, those thicker Copper bits and ends, say like a 1/16th thick connector lead, off a motor or something like that. I have a box of Copper with those items and I'm still trying to figure there grades out. Please advise, from Hamilton! Thank You!

Vacuums are too much plastic. Cord removal only on them. I don't do tv's anymore for the same reason as vacuum's, too much plastic. I've also noticed, over the last year or so, microwaves infested with cockroaches - just plain nasty. Also, I'm not sure where you are finding your Canadian pricing, but it's way off. The pricing is less for almost every category you mentioned.
