@O-Face Productions Why do you think he deserved it? Honestly, not wanting to get a new paint job ruined (for a train) is like not wanting to get a new suit ripped the moment you put it on. It's a completely reasonable reaction. Encasing someone in a tomb because he doesn't want to get "new clothes" ruined is not a reasonable reaction.

Honestly, a lot of people think Arthur is overly wholesome but as a child, that's exactly what I needed. My parents only ever paid attention to me when I was doing something wrong or didn't get an A in school, so shows like it (other examples being Franklin and Bernstein Bears) made me feel comfortable and taught me how to be a decent human being. I couldn't be more thankful for the team behind Arthur for being such an important part of my childhood and it's one of the few gems that I'm glad are still going.

There was this Thomas Christmas movie I had on VHS and the plot was Percy was frozen cus of a blizzard the movie wasn’t scary at all. But there was this one scene where Thomas was going by Percy (of course not knowing he was there) saw Percy but thomas couldn’t see it but only eyes that were following Thomas. Thomas being as smart as always thinking it was a monster, Thomas ran away. But the thing that made it horrifying was the eerie music in the background. That was the first time I ever felt fear.

April 9th. I could relate very well to that episode since I had PTSD myself. Back in 2018, a 7.3 grade earthquake struck my home. I was alone in my apartment, the lights went out, I was in an 8th floor fearing the building would collapse and the sea was only a couple kilometers away so I feared a tsunami. For the next few months, I wasn’t the same. I had constant flashbacks to that moment and in a perpetual state of alarm in fear of another quake. I couldn’t be alone in my house without suffering anxiety attacks and I panicked at the slightest sudden noise or movement. Thankfully, I have recovered since then.

@@webkinlam Yeah. I watched the episode when I was younger, but I didn't realize it till I re watched it. It was from the Wild Kratts episode "Platypus Cafe". A new villain was introduced who was an illegal chef who hunted endangered animals to prepare food. He was looking to cook platypus eggs and one of the miniaturized Kratt Brothers , Chris, got captured and Gourmand, the chef, kept implying that he was going to cook him as a side dish to the eggs, saying that he wanted "a side of Kratt".

Honestly, I think the Wordgirl special with Miss Power deserved a spot on here, considering that it should how dangerous calling people names could be, and Miss Power was a really violent villain for a kids show. Sure she simply imprisoned everyone and tried to take over the city, but when you consider that she was willing to beat up Toby and the Birthday Girl, both of whom are within the 10-11 age range, you have a bullying woman with no qualms hurting children badly.

As someone with diagnosed Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, learning about that episode Germophobia really got to me. When I heard the title I just knew something good was coming. Not everyone with OCD has germophobia, but I personally do suffer with the phobia, and it is absolutely life ruining. I haven't seen that episode, but from what you've shown of it they did an amazing job portraying how it severe it can be. I can't touch anything any one else has touched unless I hand sanitize afterwards, I can't shake hands, touch public surfaces, I even get afraid to touch my friends. I'm really glad that there is something that can show children the horrors of germphobia, in an easy to understand way. Germophobia really can be triggered from a singular event, that is true, but that means your in your genetic line someone had an anxiety disorder previously, fun fact. Anyway, I just thought as someone with OCD I would comment on that episode! I hadn't heard of it, thanks for making me and others aware!

The ep where Arthur Francine and Buster cutting school did not make the list? Every time I think about the more serious topics in kids shows that are covered well (like in Sesame Street and Mr. Roger's), it makes me wish I was able to watch them as a kid more often because I think some of it could have helped me come to terms with a lot of the trauma I struggle with today as a young adult. Big Bird not understanding Mr. Hooper's mortality brings tears to my eyes every single time, because he's starting his grieving process. And as someone who was halted in many times of grief that makes me more aware of my issues. It's amazing how easy it can be to figure out ways to explain such topics to people with little to no object permanence.

  • @Myhistory123

The PBS show Wishbone had some fairly dark episodes especially since it was adapting classic literature. The two that stick in my mind are Fleabitten Bargain, which tells Goethe's Faust and has Wishbone make a deal with the devil and Bone of Arc, which tells the story of Joan of Arc, which we know how that ends. The stories aren't too sugarcoated, but the real life segments provide some relief from the darker stories. I think a tv show targeted towards kids, taking on those stories was really impressive. I loved this show as a kid and it inspired me to read a lot of the books covered on that show.

April 9th has to be my favorite episode of Arthur. It taught me that it’s okay to be afraid and to go through a multitude of feelings after a traumatic event. Due to my anxiety disorder, I refuse to hear, see, or even be near a place or people associated with a traumatic event. It also taught me its okay to talk about my feelings after a traumatic event.

There's an even darker episode of Thomas. In the episode you spoke about, Henry is eventually let out in an episode after, but there's one where the character isn't, and ends up being buried alive. It's a.. jerk train or something, and he ends up getting himself put in a barn like building to be used as an engine for it, and at some point there's a landslide, which buries the building. Everyone else is perfectly fine, except the train that was placed in the now buried building, there's even a time skip showing the dirt covering the building, and then grass and plants growing out of it. I think being literally buried alive and forgotten about is worse than being let out a few episodes later ( The character also never comes back ) . There's also one where a boat is.. slightly grumpy, and ends up having a shit ton of boulders dumped onto him, far more than he can hold, and ends up being left on a beach from it, unable to do anything.

Lots of episodes about drug abuse) Redwall: The whole series (With swords and war, what would you expect?) Liberty's Kids: United We Stand (Seeing the pain of a man suffering from tar and feathers) Berenstain Bears: The Bad Dream (Not too dark, but helps deal with scary influences or bad dreams) Animalia: Several episodes (Gets super dark a lot of times) Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood: Daniel's Fish Dies (talking about death) Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood: The one with the fish death (ditto) WordGirl: The Rise of Miss Power (dealing with bullying and harassment) Cyberchase: Measure for Measure (The Hacker takes over Cyberspace, reunion with character's long-lost father suffering from magnetite exposure)

Mr Rogers also had an episode about a bird dying. I like the fish on better as it's more of someone Fred actually experienced and even talks about losing his dog. I don't think the others bad. At worst, it didn't really fit into an episode during a week where the trolley had visions of the past. I'm not kidding. That was the theme. But as an adult, death can still be tuff and explaining the other way helps.

If you think that “Come Out, Henry!/The Sad Story of Henry” is a dark episode, you have not seen Duncan Gets Spooked, where we literally see a locomotive DIE. Granted, it was only a story, but it was shown how the engine basically fell down in complete detail, along with the music being pretty disturbing in the night sections of the episode. Also, I basically disagree with that choice. Henry’s decision could’ve led to an accident and they HAD to teach him a lesson somehow, as in life, you sometimes have to learn the hard way. Plus, in the next episode, he gets set free. Thought I understand that Thomas isn’t your cup of tea and that you chose the episodes because of your personal thoughts.

Pundertale Fan Well, see it through Sir Topham Hatt’s eyes. You have your locomotive who refuses to leave the tunnel, even if it isn’t raining anymore and the engine is delaying passengers and potential trains that go on that same line in the schedule. You’re gonna have to do it the hard way as that would teach the engine a lesson. Plus, if you look at the TV show itself, Sir Topham Hatt is very forgiving, so he wouldn’t REALLY have left Henry there for an eternity.

Pundertale Fan They actually tried forcing him out of the tunnel with another engine. In the episode, Thomas is the one that tries(even though he’s no match for it), but in the original version in the book(yes Thomas is based of a book series), another red engine that looks similar to James tries to force Henry out, but Henry refuses to leave. In the end, they get another engine to take the train, out out Henry’s fire and leave him in the tunnel.

Did you know Henry was a disabled engine? Yeah, he was MADE with a firebox which was too small for him which is why he had trouble all the time. They had to get him "special" coal which burned hotter to keep him going. So, they legit bricked up a disabled engine in a tunnel because he didn't want to get his paint wet. Why didn't he want to get it wet? Because it was ONE happy thing he had to enjoy despite his pain. Ya know, just to make that episode even darker. Being disabled myself I can relate to Henry. He was always my favorite.

The Fat Controller, or as he’s referred to in the US Sir Topham Hatt, he says “We’ll leave you there until you are ready to come out of the tunnel.” So instead of sentencing Henry to what’s the train equivalent of a life sentence, it’s more of a time out until he learns his lesson. Also the narrator asks the audience how long it’ll take Henry to overcome his fear of the rain and ready to come out again

In fact, they were doing a 2nd take after, and the adults only lasted a minute before breaking down in tears. Even better is the fact the episode aired on Thanksgiving Day in order to make sure that parents were home to explain all this to children in order to comfort them. The one Sesame Street episode I remembered was called "Fire at Hooper's Store". A grease fire broke out inside the store, in the episode, you can clearly see Elmo shaking like he was traumatized by the event, it was like he had a death stare focused on where the smoke was coming out, then the Fire Department of New York showed up and put out the fire, when they tried to go back in, Elmo stated he didn't want to go back in, he was seen shaking and traumatized by the smoke coming out, the red/amber flashing lights, and firefighting equipment that the firefighters used like gauges, apparatuses, and breathing tanks. This episode was inspired by by September 11, 2001 terror attacks that happened a few months before the 33rd season aired. In Elmo's position, he puts himself in the eyes of a terrified child witnessing a dangerous event, outside of Sesame Street, you know where I'm going with this: burning towers of the World Trade Center followed by lights and sirens of FDNY and NYPD. The main purpose of this episode is to teach children to expect the unexpected like a fire, terrorist attack, active shooter, etc.

I've seen some fan theories that the entire premise of Thomas the Tank Engine is extremely dark. That the locomotives are in constant fear of being scrapped, they are one mishap from scrapping or if they aren't quite useful enough they're done. This is why they put so much emphasis on being "really useful and reliable" - they are fighting for their lives. It takes place in a time frame when diesel locomotives are taking over from steam, the steam locomotives are obsolete and know it - as do the diesels. This is why the diesels are seen as antagonists, they are the ones causing the steam locomotives to be threatened with scrapping. Lorries and buses are also seen as a threat for the same reason. Everywhere else other than the Island of Sodor steam locomotives are being scrapped very rapidly, and Sir Topham Hatt can buy the obsolete locomotives for pennies on the dollar which is why the fleet is a mix of different locomotive classes from various railways around the UK, many of which are still painted in their former railways' liveries. Donald and Douglas are an extreme example of this - unexpectedly sent as a "two for the price of one," likely with the intent that one would be used for parts for the other, and they were so worried about getting sent away - to certain death. The ones sent to Sodor rather than scrapped are lucky to be alive, but still fear their days are numbered, and are doing everything they can to survive. Really a rather dark, fearful life to live. This does give me an idea of what they could do for new episodes: Set it in present day. Over time with it's obsolete steam locomotives, the Island of Sodor became a tourist destination for railfans worldwide, basically a giant still-operational train museum. Realizing this, the surviving locomotives (a few having been scrapped along the way) are preserved, along with steam locomotives from around the world that otherwise would have been scrapped, such as some types from China and South Africa that were used into the '90s (this could bring in some ethnic diversity themes) as well as various others from North America, Mainland Europe, and so on being sent there as a sort of "haven" or "refuge" for old steam locomotives. Possibly some more unique and iconic earlier diesel locomotives from around the world are brought in as well, now not seen as a threat but fellow obsolete survivors. Famous preserved (or new-build, such as the "Tornado") locomotives from around the world could make guest appearances - Flying Scotsman (I seem to recall that one actually visited Sodor once in the original books), Mallard, Challenger, Southern Pacific 4449, and others. In this context, the locomotives no longer live in fear of scrapping, but face some new interesting challenges of modern times. Could spend an entire season of the international locomotives telling their stories from their homeland, how they survived, and how they eventually made it to Sodor.
