Most snooker shots, as in many sports, are foreseeable with a little knowledge and experience of the contest. Shaun Murphy's unbelievable pot - the very first of this video - was imagination of a professional competitor in true world class. Completely refreshing, whether you've watched snooker all your life, or simply have the character to recognise sporting brilliance - when you witness it. A moment of sheer, improvised magic.

I never realised Stephen Hendry had so much humility. And I certainly didn’t realise that he’d be the best snooker commentator of all time.

He has no humility. I met him and Alain Robiduex at a Chris Eubank fight in Glasgow in the early 90's. Poor Alain Robiduex was left to apologise for the boorish behaviour of the brat. He was lucky not to leave the event in an ambulance. As regards his skill as a commentator; charisma can neither be taught nor learnt.

Alex Higgins' ridiculous shot on the blue playing against Jimmy White is arguably the greatest shot ever made in professional snooker. He went on to win that frame and the match in the final frame with a 16-15 victory, followed by a victory over the legendary Ray Reardon in the final (who had previously beaten Higgins in the 1976 World Championship). That was the 1982 World Championship.

To be fair, there were a couple of straight long pots in there, that weren't that amazing that they belong on a list like this. But I'm so glad those legendary Jimmy White shots made it on the list. Took a while to get to them, but they belong to the most amazing snooker shots ever. Wouldn't have minded to have seen Steve Davis and Paul Hunter in there. They played some amazing snooker.

I think those "long straight pots" were included because they were great examples of "cueing power". It wasn't the pot per se, that was incredible, but the backspin on the cue ball, which is part of the shot.
@goffik1980
11 ай бұрын
It's easy to say a shot isn't that amazing when you're not the one pulling it off, and have little knowledge of what it takes to do so. Making something difficult look easy is the true sign of a pro. Extremely long shots that require massive power and clinical cue ball control are far, far from easy... which is why the ex-pro commentators react the way they do.

The magnificence of a shot can also be judged by whether other pros are able to replicate it. Id say that Alex Higgins' prodigious blue on the old slow tables is the most unreproducible shot here, and there are several amazing ones.
@freyc1
Жыл бұрын
I guess you underestimate the difficulty of reproducing Maguire's shot! More seriously, I don't think Higgins' shot is that difficult to reproduce for the pros (they showed some of them trying a while ago and they tended to overdo it, if anything). Plus Higgins didn't really mean to play the shot that way. That being said, that break is great to watch for the series of hard pots, although his positional game is all over the place.
@sirlordcomic
Жыл бұрын
@@freyc1 He clearly meant to play it that way. Replicating any shot for fun is possible for a group of pros after the event. Higgins played the shot under immense pressure in a world championship semi-final game. No other shot comes close. Also he was drunk, making it even more impressive.
@freyc1
Жыл бұрын
@@sirlordcomic No, he clearly didn't mean to land where he landed (he wasn't stupid). And I never said it wasn't a great pot, especially under the circumstandes : I responded to someone saying it was the most unreproducible shot in the video. As far as your last sentence is concerned, needing to be drunk to perform doesn't make anything more impressive to me, and I don't think he's drunk here.
@sirlordcomic
Жыл бұрын
@@freyc1 White said in a recent interview Higgins was drinking large vodkas and orange.. So he certainly wasn't sober. I meant he was playing for the black.. I said nothing about playing while drunk being impressive, I meant that fact he was drunk made it technically even more impressive. I doubt the pros you mentioned could reproduce it with even one large vodka and orange in them.

So many of these shots are amazing but the context of the frame or match is what makes the great ones great. The one before last is the one that made me pick up my jaw off the floor. The way he made the cue ball came to a complete stop after such a powerful shot over such short distance is ridicules. I have watched thousands of top quality snooker shots over the years. IMO the unfashionable Peter Edbon's pink ball was THE GREATEST SHOT EVER IN THE HISTORY OF SNOOKER, because of the context. Semi-final of the World Championships, if he missed he was out of the tournament. This shot inspired him to comeback and win the match against the odds and then do exactly the same in the final in the deciding frame against Stephen Hendry, one of the all time greats and become World Champion! Peter Ebdon, often gets slated by SOME of the snooker world for being a slow and deliberate player, but he was someone who did not have the natural talent of say a Jimmy White, however, he absolutely maximised his potential with his incredible attitude and application. He left the game of snooker not only being able to say "I won the world title" but also being able to say "I once played probably the best shot in the history of the game!". Well done Peter Ebdon!

I never realised Stephen Hendry had so much humility. And I certainly didn’t realise that he’d be the best snooker commentator of all time.
@michaellavery4899

Not sure humility is the word. But yeah good guy
When shots are so good you treat yourself to a pint for just watching
Seeing luca brecel in this video made me smile.... such a talented player since such a young age.
This is a top vid and definitely the best choices of shot I've ever seen in a snooker video. The maker is obviously a proper player to realise the level of difficulty for the ones included. Great stuff!

The white pink was like something out ot eh matrix
To be fair, there were a couple of straight long pots in there, that weren't that amazing that they belong on a list like this. But I'm so glad those legendary Jimmy White shots made it on the list. Took a while to get to them, but they belong to the most amazing snooker shots ever. Wouldn't have minded to have seen Steve Davis and Paul Hunter in there. They played some amazing snooker.

I think those "long straight pots" were included because they were great examples of "cueing power". It wasn't the pot per se, that was incredible, but the backspin on the cue ball, which is part of the shot.
@goffik1980

@freyc1
@sirlordcomic
Жыл бұрын
@@freyc1 He clearly meant to play it that way. Replicating any shot for fun is possible for a group of pros after the event. Higgins played the shot under immense pressure in a world championship semi-final game. No other shot comes close. Also he was drunk, making it even more impressive.

@@freyc1 White said in a recent interview Higgins was drinking large vodkas and orange.. So he certainly wasn't sober. I meant he was playing for the black.. 8:24 for the title screen shot
I hadn't seen that Jimmy White pink in ages.. All of the other shots are great, important or genius, but that one still has the quality to make me wonder what's wrong with the tv (then) or wifi (now). Magic!
Brilliant compilation. Thanks for the replays, some of those shots happen so fast that I missed some of the action with the first viewing.
14:08 is the best shot of all time! And the way he comes down for the red after and pots that too at "hurricane speed" to the top right is incredible.
So many of these shots are amazing but the context of the frame or match is what makes the great ones great. An exhibition shot when the frame is out of sight or the other guy needs 3 snookers are brilliant to watch but the truly great shots are the genuinely brave ones when the frame is still live.
The opponent’s face at 0:15 😂😂 he couldn’t believe it
Amazing selection, makes it very hard to pick a favorite. I am not an expert, in fact never dared to touch a snooker table -& don't think I would ever will- however, my limited practice with billiard allowed me to appreciate and enjoy each one of these magnificent shots . The one before last is the one that made me pick up my jaw off the floor. The way he made the cue ball came to a complete stop after such a powerful shot over such short distance is ridicules. Is as if he shot a magnetic ball on a copper surface!
The shot by The Whirlwind where the white reverses back was incredible, the fact that The Rocket couldn’t replicate it just goes to show.
When Jimmy potted the pink and suddenly the que ball stopped dead, it was like magic
There are Really amazing shots ever.
Great compilation! Only shot I would also argue was worthy was Neil Robertson's long pot of the red with the cue-ball cannoning into another red to clear the path for the black.
All of them are wizards.

A few of these are seen daily at my local hall and I'm stunned that they made this list. Most are beautiful, and some are absolutely momentous.
