Top 50 PC Engine CD / Turbografx CD Games of All Time (Commentary Version)

Ойындар

Seems like there's a slight audio bug on #6. It didn't mute my first take on the commentary so I talk over myself. My bad!
This is my personal Top 50 games of all time for the PC-Engine CD and Turbografx CD. I'm doing something a little different with this one - there will be 2 versions - 1 with my commentary and 1 without. Whichever one gets the most views after a few months will determine the style of videos I make in future! If you like commentary, please watch and like the "commentary" version. If you just want to see the games, please watch and like the "no commentary" version!
Some controversial decisions were made. Did your favourite game make the cut?

    I've only been playing Turbo Grafix 16 games for about two years, and it quickly became my favorite retro console. The games are really bright and colorful and the controls are always spot on. Idk how it didn't do better outside of Japan. It has a phenomenal library of games, and the very best shoot em ups there ever was. I'm addicted to Blazing Lasers and Sapphire

    I have the original Turbo hardware, and the portable version, the turbo express and I honestly thought I had almost every game there was.. Keith Courage, R Type, Splatterhouse and Devil's Crush. I had no idea there were actually so many games.

    In short, it did poorly in USA due to bad marketing and, to a lesser extent, poor choices of games to localize. Best example off top of head for latter is the pack-in title they gave us here in the west - Keith Courage in Alpha Zones. In Japan, it's based off some anime, so they changed the whole game's story. Which, honestly, could be fine, if it was a great game. But... it's just not. It's not like, LJN bad (or Darkwing Duck bad if sticking to TG16 games for reference), but it is very mediocre. Bonk's Adventure or Blazing Lazers would've been a much better choice. As for bad marketing... just google Johnny Turbo. lmao

    Most of those games Juganawt was blown away by (Neo Geo games, Sapphire) all use the Arcade Card, so they're a step above the Super CD games. Basically, they have an insane amount of RAM for a console of that generation.

    Yes, it was so awesome that a little machine (smallest home console ever made) that debuted all the way back in 1987 could be upgraded to play truly excellent from conversions of much more expensive Neo Geo hardware that was also a HUGE 3 YEARS NEWER (1990), which was practically an eon in those days with rapid development of computer chips!

    Got a duo for Christmas in the early 90s. I am forever mystified. Just found out it plays pc engine disc... trying to figure out a Japan collection. My wife gave me ps5 for Christmas. (Married the right woman) more interested in my duo. So weird... So epic... birth of Ys. Finishing 8, own 9. Duo is a masterpiece. Lords of the rising sun, not a duo specific may be my favorite game of all time.

    Cannot believe you had Download 2 in there, but had no room for Gradius II Gofer!.......It was an amazing port and the only one on a home console for 5 years after, could have also made room for Hellfire S, Zero Wing and the unreleased Space Fantasy Zone. Apart from that, great Vid!

  • @Juganawt

    @Juganawt

    I steered clear of Space Fantasy Zone as it wasn't officially released and therefore was outside the scope of the video. For me, Gradius II is never as much fun as Parodius. It's fine and dandy and all, but I wouldn't class it as one of my favourites, especially as there are bundles of more entertaining shooters on the system. Hellfire S and Zero Wing are Toaplan shooters, and there's just something in their shooters which always seems lacking. Can't quite put my finger on it, but it just doesn't gel with me.

    Not sure if anyone brought this up, but the North American chip version of r-type is also the complete game. It's only the Japanese version that was split into two cards as I guess memory was too expensive at that time. I actually prefer this version as the soundtrack on the complete CD kind of ruins it for me.

    I wondee how did they manage to achieve the zoom effect on Fatal Fury Special. In the SNES port the effect seems to be simulated by collapsing the tiles to the center 1-2 pixels when the character goes to the background. But here fue effect looks better. True scaling?

  • @Juganawt

    @Juganawt

    7 жыл бұрын

    Felipegcs from what I can tell, it's not true scaling. I don't know for sure but it seems like this version uses the same technique as on the SNES port, but the higher quality sprite work makes the effect look much closer to the original game's scaling effects.

  • @ShallRemainUnknown

    @ShallRemainUnknown

    3 жыл бұрын

    I believe they adjusted the resolution on the fly as part of the scaling effect. The Turbografx /PCE had very versatile/programmable resolutions, and could run games full-speed with very few (if any) compromises in "middle" (or even higher) resolutions. Other games like Afterburner used some software scaling effects (the aircraft carrier at takeoff, and large refueling plane), for comparison.

    Chiki Chiki Boys, i love that game, very cutesy but a great action game to get your arcade style game on! though i dont know what the difference would be to the Genesis/MD version, if any. Exile 1 is on Genesis too, that game definitely requires a hefty amount of grinding but my sister beat it eventually, very unforgiving indeed. funny thing about Forgotten Worlds, it's easily beat in 2-player mode (since you can continue as long as your partner is alive.) but in 1-player it is brutal to beat and so far no luck in solo play, then again i only play it casually. Populous "expansion"? sold american! lol seriously though i love Populous and to know there's another version out there to play i have no need for any other reason to hunt it down. other than that, very good list, surprising that the PC Engine is an 8-bit console.

  • @Juganawt

    @Juganawt

    7 жыл бұрын

    Chiki Chiki Boys - the PC Engine has one less layer of parallax compared to the Megadrive version, but has more detail in some of the graphics to make up for it. It also has the CD-Audio soundtrack. Exile on Genesis was very similar to the Turbografx original (which is a remake of XZRII on MSX) , except it was heavily censored, with several part of the game cuts for religious overtones and violence (like the burning village, and the Christian Crusaders being renamed). Forgotten Worlds is hard as nails in single player. It's designed as a 2 player co-op, and doesn't reduce the difficulty if you're playing solo. Populous is essentially the same game as the original game, except all of the levels have been changed, and you can choose multiple graphical "skins" for the game. Great fun!

    An excellent list from arguably one of the best consoles of the 90s!! But to me, the CD attachment was an utter disaster!!! All the card adapters needed to use some of the games with the CD attachment (think Arcade Card Duo and the Kisado converter) was just ridiculous due to the lack of memory NEC failed to provide (think Nintendo64 years later). Now dont get me wrong, I love a lot of the CD games!! Lords of Thunder and Y's are my favorite. But looking at the architecture of the TG16, it really didnt need the CD, if they would have made an attachment similar to the proposed Coleco Super Games Module and created "Super Games" it would have done a lot better IMHO. Or at the very least, not made the TG/CD attachment and opt to just release the Turbo Duo as an upgrade similar to the XBox One S to the One X.

    By restricting yourself to english language and CD only titles I value your video much more than the rest here on YT. In most cases the CD counterpart of a Hucard game has no real benefits other than better music. It just doesn't justify the price tag nor the disk space needed to own these imo. I'd probably go even further and leave out the ports entirely, unless it's a port that is on par if not better than the original arcade game (a must have exclusives list basically). I know of AoF and Fatal Fury for about a year only, but damn, they're both the BEST ports on ANY system available at the time. Knowing the Turbo's specs I couldn't even believe it at first, because it's basically EXACT copies (minus the health bars ofc) and just as good as the originals. Just... how ? PS: Thanks for Nexr btw, hadn't heard of it yet. Btw, do you know of any fan translations or language patches for japan only PCE-CD's that would make it worth to buy ?

    I would love to see a translated version of Snatcher for the PCE-CD, but, to my knowledge, translated games for the machine are few and far between.

    @@Juganawt Ah well... too bad. Why the PCE-CD version of Snatcher though ? Because it's the least censored version ? I'd prefer a Saturn or PS1 translation actually, but afaik the project over at Junkers HQ has not made much progress since their announcement. PS: The prices for the Sega CD / MEGA CD versions went through the roof btw, starting at 500€ and 700$ for a used copy. What the actual F*** ? E: Confusing systems again... I suppose MSX2 and PC-88 are identical ?

    Honestly tho, the only downfall I can see for this system was the 64 on screen sprite limit which was only half what both the Genesis and SNES were capable of. And considering the types of games that are prevalent on the system, it NEEDED those sprites! The Genesis at least had far worse faults than that.

    I think a lot of people forget that the Pc Engine was competing with the Famicom and the Sega Mark III in 1987 at the time of its release and NOT the Megadrive (released a year later in Japan) and the Super Famicom (released 2 years later in Japan). It is an 8bit machine, after all and, technically at least, it blew the nuts off it’s competition. To see it still competing with the 16-bits (and in some ways actually getting better conversions of games) was absolutely astonishing.

    @@Juganawt Indeed, it's quite the powerful console & the fact that it can use nearly it's entire available color palette at once shows why the games are so gorgeously colorful. Another downfall tho was the paltry amount of work RAM it came with. Shame it didn't come with more, although that was rectified with the RAM expansion that the CD add-on units gave it which is when the consoles potential was truly unlocked. Comparing many of the Super & Arcade CD games to the Genesis and SNES, it beats them outright in graphical prowess.

    I like how you cheated on this list & gave an entire series a spot. I know that sounds sarcastic, but honestly, it's ballzy & definitely out-of-box thinking. When you look at the way a list is normally done by most KZreadrs: It just appears schizophrenic when they spread & sprinkle an entire series thu out the list... And on top of it... When they have zero commentary to justify their opinion... Then it just seems like they just randomly rolled the dice OR picked them out of hat... ...in order to just push a video out for the ad revenue. Your list on the other hand is elegant & refined... ...and I suspect it will stand the test of time...

    What? Since when was Jim Power for the PC Engine unfinished? I think you're thinking of the Genesis version, that was unfinished and never released until somewhat recently.

  • @Juganawt

    @Juganawt

    Unfortunately due to a rushed development, the port suffered some bugs affecting player movement that, particularly relating to the way Jim jumps and falls, which are not evident in any other version of either Jim Power game. Certain direction inputs cancel Jim’s movement mid-jump, leading him to stop dead in his tracks and drop like a stone. Jim can often get stuck in platforms when trying to jump repeatedly in quick succession. There’s also some collision detection issues between the player and platforms, items and enemies. It’s clear that most of the development time was spent on audio and video presentation rather than QA, and feels unfinished and unpolished as a result. I still really enjoy the game nonetheless, though.

    @@Juganawt I just tested it, and compared it with the Amiga version, and I see what you mean. It's unfortunate, but the PC Engine version is still very playable. The Genesis/SNES/DOS version is actually an updated version of the game was a number of changes. Overall I'd say the best versions are the finished Genesis and Amiga versions. The SNES version has a horrible reverse parallax effect to produce a pseudo 3D effect with some glasses, but it's nauseating inducing with or without them. Luckily there's a romhack that fixes this.
