The On-ah-biao is a deck of cardboard that’s existed in Taiwan for four to five decades. These decks may be a bit underrated but their origins date back to the Ming and Ching dynasties. Never underestimate the joy and entertainment found in this creative card game.
The Kendama was introduced to Taiwanese children by Japanese students studying abroad in France. The toy seems quite simple but is has evolved to include a series of complicated techniques that are sometimes used in performances.
I’m sure we all remember playing with marbles. Many children in Taiwan built lasting friendships by creating new games and rules together. Some even spent lots of happy afternoons sharing a marble soda!
Spinning tops is as familiar to Taiwan, as they are to many other countries around the world. The world’s most traditional toy has developed into both simple and advanced modes that can used in everything from fortune telling to competitions between friends.
Joyce’s favorite has to be the diabolo! She was even the first diabolo performer at the United Nations. This toy from the Three Kingdoms period is now an important part of elementary school PE classes in Taiwan. It’s become something of a national sport earning Taiwan numerous titles at international diabolo competitions.
