    I have the Sen 660s and the DT 770. In contrast to many people that seem to swear by the DT 770s to me they sound a bit harsh. This can be great for finding problems in the mix but for general listening they become fatiguing quickly at least for me. I can only comfortably listen to them if I eq them down a couple of db around 8kHz and 16kHz. Actually I was surprised when you described them as not harsh having already described the Sony as very bright (I haven't tried them but I am really curious to see how they sound). I have A/B mine quite a lot and when I switch between the 660s and the DT 770 the sibilants just pop out whatever I am listening to (hi hats, more bright snares, crashes you name it, are all over the place) to the point where I would drastically EQ them if I was only using the DT 770 for mixing. I would say that I am a bit more sensitive to bright sounds (and I like more warm sounds in general this is true) but the problem is the following. Many Beyer Dynamics headphones, including DT 770, have a really obvious peak around 8-9kHz in their frequency response which is measurable. And the peak is also quite extreme, it is around +9 to 10 dB SPL from the expected flat frequency response (at least according to the measurements I have seen online in a few popular review sites). So there is a big amplification there (at least on paper) and honestly I am not sure how much harsher you can get at least at this specific high treble range. I am not trying to argue with anyone's experience as this is really subjective but having them described as not harsh at all (not only by you but also many reviewers actually) and the fact that many people seem to not only not be bothered, which is understandable as people have different sensitivity to different frequencies, but not even notice any brightness in such an obvious EQ peak (it is similar to taking your DAW EQ and going in these frequencies and almost maxing them out) really strikes me as odd. Again I am not trying to say everyone is wrong but anyway I wanted to mention it in case someone has a similar experience. I might as well be reading the charts wrong too to be frank. (It is worth mentioning that below these frequencies the headphones are almost completely flat so if you are listening to something that does not have many trebles you should get a pretty accurate and not harsh at all sound). Anyway thanks for the review. Cheers.

    The Sony MDR-7506 are mix engineer Andrew Shep's headphones of choice. For recording, or just listening, I really like the DT-770s. For mixing, I like the Beyerdynamic DT-880 Pros, with SoundID Reference. Hifiman Sundara/Ananda/Edition XS, and Ollo M5X, or the Beyer 1990 Pro might be interesting to me too, further down the line.

    A thing about the DT770, the 32/250 ohm versions have similar drivers, but the 80 ohms have distinctly different drivers, which gives them also a distinctly different sound to the other versions. Many people (including myself) prefer the 80 ohm sound.

    I know this was 6 months ago but I’m just wondering how would the 80 ohm sound like? Is it more warm or punchy? Sorry if this is a dumb question

  • @tHaH4x0r

    @tHaH4x0r

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@iimmyyyy I am an engineer by trade, so I dont really like using vague words like that. As far as I can remember (it has been a while since I tried the 250 ohm version), the 80 ohm has a stronger 'V curve', and hence is just more pleasant to listening to. It might not be 'accurate' in the sense of a flat frequency response, but if I would want that I'd look at other types of headphones anyways. I suppose people would call this 'warm' or stronger bass. What might be more important than driver response, is that the 32 ohm versions come with faux leather pads, whilst the 80 ohms come with (excellent) velour pads. That alone I think is worth it to get the 80 ohm version.

    I sent my Ollo S4X 1.1 back because even though sound quality is great, they are missing a lot of high end so you can't trust your mixes. Also the ear pads are too small so they sit on the ears which is painful with the high clamping force. However Ollo is currently working on bigger ear pads for the next version. Maybe they'll fix the missing treble too, who knows. For now, I'd advise waiting until the next version with bigger pads comes out.

    @@ChrisBessy I’ve been using them for awhile, basically since I first started making music. My mixes turn out nice but my ears have adjusted to them considering how long I have used them for now. They are not the best headphone by any means on the market but I find them to have a fairly balanced frequency response. If you are looking for a first time headphone that’s cheap, good material (I’ve only replaced the ear cups to get a softer more comfortable feel with them) and fairly balanced then I would suggest them. I plan on possibly getting a pair of audiotechnica at mx50 possibly soon however but more for the production side of things because the low end is boosted somewhat. In the end it just comes down to doing the work, managing time, and being patient. You can even get great mixes using apple earbuds. I occasionally use apple earbuds as a reference sometimes when mixing so my mixes have the capability to translate on other devices

    this is a great video. only mystery to me is how one would point out the high-end on the Adam and Sony, yet totally ignore the typical "Mt. Beyer" peak on the 770s. Super hyped treble is the Beyer signature sound, and it's fatiguing af.

  • @SeanDivine

    In my experience, the 770s are very dependent on the headphone amp. I have the 80ohm version - they’re not nearly as bright as the others mentioned, not fatiguing at all to my ears.

    For No.5 it is very bright and harsh and the cups are easily damage. It is nearly no bass😱 For HD650 it is lack of high-en. If used it for mixing, the mix will be easily too bright. Although it is very light, it make my head so painful foot long time working because of the head bend. Honestly, I can’t comment those headphones I haven’t own ever. My favourite headphones for mixing is HD800S. It is very light and comfortable. The sounds is so accurate and flat.😁 Moreover, one of the most famous mixing engineer in Hong Kong, sometimes he will use Audeze LCD-4 for mixing and mastering. Recently I have bought Hi-X65. I feel it sounds more accurate than HD660, but the head bend issue is same as HD660.

The 700 Pro X has a big spike in the mid bass resulting in unnaturally loud and tiring kicks, lacks treble, vocals are too recessed and everything sounds slightly veiled. The 770 has a big spike in the treble which can also get tiring but otherwise has a more balanced sound, better soundstage and better clarity. I returned the 700 Pro X and kept the 770.

I even tried SonarWorks but my problem was not solved . Where do you think the problem comes from? Do I need to replace my speakers or buy a open back headphone ? But which model is better? The problem with headphones is that they are not really stereo, but binaural. When you are listening to speakers, even if a sound is panned all the way to the left you will still hear that sound with both your left and your right ear, not so with headphones. And this really messes with your perspective on the mix balance (....like it is really difficult to balance things properly, especially stereo sources like reverbs etc...If you're not used to working on headphones). The solution to this problem is to use a plugin which adds crossfeed to your headphone (some of the signal to the left channel bleeds to the right channel an vice verso). This will give you a more realistic, and speaker-like experience (with the sacrifice of a slightly narrower stereo image), and will translate better (if you're not used to working on headphones). A plugin I`ll recommend is a plugin called "Can-Opener "(and I think it's about 60 dollars), This is not a speaker simulation plugin, or room simulation, but is just a very clever crossfeed plugin for your headphone.
