My Top 5 Best Scotch Whiskies for Beginners / Buyer's Guild.
#BestScotch #BeginnersWhisky #Macallan
*Editors Note: Balvenie 12 Double Wood is first matured in Ex-Bourbon barrels, then finished in Sherry barrels.
Scores:
After my initial score I add or subtract points relative on how I perceive value (based on what I paid for the bottle). A zero value means I think the price is justified.
0-69.5 - Don’t bother trying, life is too short for bad spirit.
70-79.5 - Worth trying, but you’re not missing out if you don’t.
80-84.5 - I recommend trying.
85-87.5 - Definitely try this!
88-92.5 - I recommend buying a bottle blind!
93-95.5 - Stuff you reserve for special pours!
96+ - The meaning of life.

Belvenie doublewood 12 is AMAZING on the rocks. As soon as the water stsrts to melt, all these complex sweet and floral sherry notes come out with zero burn.

Great tutorial, Jeremy! I sip a lot of different single malts on my ASMR channel and appreciate people like you doing the detailed educational reviews that I'm just not good at (better at just drinking the stuff). Some of my earliest were Glenmorangie 10 yr (available everywhere in the States for around $40 USD) and The Balvenie DoubleWood you reviewed here (still one of my all-time favorites). Thank you for all you do and please keep it up!

Love everything about this. Your detailed tasting notes on the screen, the +/- value component of your marking, your thorough explanations of each dram, and especially your reasoning for choosing your 5 starter scotches. I totally agree that a great way to quickly turn a novice off of scotch is to start them on a cheaper or bland blend. All of the drams you chose highlight a specific aspect of scotch that could be appealing to beginners. I hate how people automatically assume that peat isn't for beginners. I'm living proof to the contrary.

Only scotches I can recall owning/drinking thus far 1) Monkey Shoulder (thanks Whisky Tribe). Really enjoy, gone through a few bottles. Easy/friendly drinking 2) Chivas Regal 12 - First foray into scotches. It's OK. Drinkable, but glad I've tried others since. 3) Lagavulin 8 - I really enjoyed this one! The aroma is fantastic and sits well on my palette. 4) Ardbeg An Oa - Loving this one too. A bit sweeter than Lagavulin, and a little less peaty. Can drink this one all day. 5) ? I haven't tried that many scotches yet =), (Yes I've had Johnny W. Black, OK nothing to write home about or worthy of list IMO)

I had The Balvenie sampler pack early in my whisky journey and came away enjoying the 14 CC over the 12 or 17 Doublewoods. Bought a bottle of that as my first full Scotch and the fun hasn't stopped since! So yeah, I'd go 14 CC over 12DW since it was a bit friendlier with the rum sweetness.

Last year i started with Glenlivet12 (green bottle). Its my go to. I like the smoothness. I've tried the Glenlivet 14, congac finish cask, but would prefer actual congac to this. Sheildaig12 has a heavy taste of alcohol. Tried Dewars, i can tell blended isn't for me. Single malt all the way!

I think you hit every point very well in this episode. The first time I really enjoyed whisky neat was after drinking a few beers on brew day. Got my pallet acclimated to alcohol. I tried Buffalo Trace and laphroaig for the first time at my friends and to my surprise fell in love with peat. Maybe some first timers like my self need something more intense to really pick the flavors out. I never liked bourbon early on because it was too clingy and sweet.

Thats a good beginners whiskey, the reason you probably didnt enjoy that much is more likely because you were already into high flavor sofisticated stuff as dark chocolate, dark coffe, ham, spices, etc. Since women are by majority not into such rich things that glenfiddich would be a great whiskey for them start with, so basically is a whiskey for who doesnt likes whiskey at first stance, other examples are Jameson, monkey shoulders, etc, and for a very few the walkers red label and the grouse.

JW Black was the first scotch I bought years ago after Christopher Hitchens passed. I was inexperienced and only casually drank bourbon. I didn't like it. As of Christmas 2019 though I made my way back into scotch with Monkey Shoulder which I loved. Since then I've had Highland Park 12 which I thought was great, but a bit underwhelming and soon after I jumped head first into peat territory with Ardbeg 10. To sum up my experience with Ardbeg: someone would have to file a restraining order against me to keep me away from it, because I'm obsessed with it. It was so good that the day after first trying it I got one of those "peat flashbacks" you described in your Ardbeg lineup video. Wonderful stuff!

Definitely can’t fault your reasoning on any of the whiskies you included as they’re all great. Maybe the HP 12 instead of 18 for someone brand new to scotch simply bc of the price.

I’m trying to find a “daily sipper “ in scotch away from Johnnys red. Tons of videos in that ‘category’ for bourbon but not as easy to find in scotch. Maybe scotch in itself doesn’t lend itself to a daily sipping whiskey for the price once you get past the bar staples? Thoughts?

So many great scotch whiskies that fit in the daily sipper category. Obviously going to be more expensive than bourbon, but worth it IMO. If you're coming from JW Red, I'd recommend Ballantine's for an inexpensive blend, and if you want to spend a little more Monkey Shoulder is a good beginner scotch or anything on this top 5, cheers :)

I did branch out to Aberfeldy 12, Macallan 12, and Highland Park 12 more recently which I also enjoy. I tried Lagavulin 12 and discovered that peaty flavor isn't really for me (Islay kicks me in the backside it seems). The ones in this video seem like some good ones to try and help me branch out. Both of these brands are actually considered value for money. The 18 yo versions are very nice, indeed. As for peated ones the 12 yo JW is a good introduction. I don't really like it... If you like smoke + peat, Ardbeg 10 is a winner. BUT...You better begin with connemara peated, though. It's Irish, easily drinkable and cheap, at least in Europe. p.s If you didn't like a specific one, don't throw it away. You may like it in a year or so.

Good point, all 3 of those can be had for mid $20's in the US are good quality and will let you know if you like Scotch Whiskey. My first was the Glenmorange 10 like many others which I enjoyed but then when I got some more expensive choices like Aberlour A'bunadh and Deanston 12 I was blown away by the depth and complexity of flavors available in single malt Scotch. Cheers

Crazy how the prices are different in different countries. Here in hungary I can get Johnnie Walker Black for about the equivalent of 35 USD, Talisker 10 for about 40(!) USD, Balvenie 12 for 55-60 USD, Macallan 12 for like 85-100 USD and Highland Park 18 for 160 USD. Have to stack up those Taliskers for this price!

Even if Canada had the Mac12 for $90-100 CAD, id be ok with that, and probably purchase it regularly. It is unfortunate. I do think $200 for HP18 is too expensive. But you can find it for much cheaper is other areas, I paid $145 CAD, and seen it for $120 USD. I think a lot of beginners try HP18 and are blown away, (I was). Talisker does have a good amount of peat. But nothing like Ardbeg, or Laphroaig level of peat. Talisker lets you know what peat is without blowing your head off lol. Cheers.

i appreciate the effort that went into making this video-- lovely production for a yt vid--, however disagree with most of your choices. of course taste is perhaps the most subjective thing, but calling chivas (which i don't even particularly like) a "low quality blend" and suggesting that jw black is in some way better than glenfiddich 12? you're off your marbles, mate.

  • @SippersSocialClub

    @SippersSocialClub

Regular Chivas is a mixing whisky, I would consider most mixing whiskies not suitable to drink neat, especially if you're recommending something for a beginner to try. It will just make them hate whisky. I would definitely take JW black over Fiddich 12, its less money and slightly better IMO, but like you said, taste is subjective.
