😂😂😂 Yes it did and we did not go out and killed our fellow classmate or a bunch of people.

I grew up watching the Saturday morning cartoons (Scooby Doo, Space Ghost, Jetson's, Jonny Quest, Herculoids, Warner Brothers (Bugs Bunny & crew), and Star Trek: The Animated Series). The "Boob Tube" was definitely my babysitter (I have 4 older siblings). My favorite is still Jonny Quest (even the later series was good), and some of the stories could be made into movies today if they wanted to. The one that would be really good to make into a movie is the one called "The Invisible Monster". That thing gave me nightmares, and the sound the creature would make just sent chills down your spine.

They did make a movie about that monster - Forbidden Planet! Johnny Quest borrowed heavily from the 1956 classic.

In Forbidden Planet the "Creature of the Id" was generated from the mental/psychological energy from the Krell or Dr. Morbius via the planets power generation systems. The planets power system enhanced the "Id" of a being to form the creature. For Jonny Quest the creature was created from pure energy during an experiment gone wrong and was its own living being. But yes, both were pretty terrifying for their time.

@@calkelpdiver Totally. I was addressing the design of the creature, and to some extent its behavior. Having seen JQ first, the Id monster was a real “aha” moment.

"Fantastic Voyage" was an awesome cartoon. I never realized there were only 17 episodes. I saw reruns on Sunday mornings many years later.

Being a kid in the 70's, the only two on this list I remember watching were Fantastic Voyage and The Herculoids. I forgot all about Fantastic Voyage until this video, I seem to remember liking it a lot. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

I'm 64, and I grew up watching Saturday Morning Cartoons. Of the ones you featured, "The Herculoids," and "Fantastic Voyage" were my favorites. That said, this is the very first I'm hearing about "Johnny Cipher in Dimension Zero," and "Rocket Robin Hood." I guess none of the local networks where I lived decided to pick those up. I'll have to check those out . . . . While I liked the artwork for "Space Angel," "Clutch Cargo," and "Captain Fathom;" the 'Syncro-Vox' animation technique always gave me the creeps to the extent that I couldn't watch the intro to "Sponge Bob" with my son, or the commercial for Quizno's, either. As a sidebar, I'm an avid plastic model builder, and in 1969, a 1/72nd scale kit of The Voyager from the "Fantastic Voyage" cartoon was made by (who else?) Aurora - complete with a full interior and figures of all the characters - but was only available for that year. Then, after a 40 year absence, this model kit was reissued by Moebius Models in 2010 in a reproduction of the original 1969 box. (Interestingly, the box artwork depicted the Voyager "dogfighting" what looks a lot like the COVID 19 virus . . . .) Thanks for sharing this with us! 386th Like.

I miss the Aurora models! I had most of the monsters.

"The Herculoids" was cool. Years later, it was packaged with other action cartoons in a show called "Hanna-Barbera's World of Super Adventure." That series seemed to be the "Wide World of Sports" of adventure cartoons: a grab-bag of short features that presented the best of many prior, excellent shows, including "Fantastic Four."

I loved Space Angel back then, and it's predecessor Clutch Cargo. At six of seven years old, it never occurred to me how creepy the whole Synchro-Vox thing was. 😄

Loved the Herculoids! How strange that before you played the sound clip, my memory could also recall the sound of a Hanna - Barbera laser! So distinctive! Thanks!

It's nice to see ROCKET ROBIN HOOD get some love here. I get a kick out of the cross over between ROCKET ROBIN HOOD and the sixties animated SPIDER MAN, reusing the same animation, characters, and weird psychedelic style.

Top TV cartoon action!

I recently rewatched what’s available if Space Angel on YT. While the animation odd very limited, the stories are mostly well written, and the comic book style drawings are generally very good. I’d had only a vague memory of this show from childhood, so was very pleased to rediscover it.

I had never heard of most of these until I started going to pop culture conventions. (They were all before my time). They are all imaginative and of wildly varying quality (total effect, not cost of animation or writing talent).

The only two I never heard of were Johnny Cipher and that Robin Hood. One of the local children's show picked up "Space Angel" when it went into syndication.

I recall the beloved Fantastic Voyage being on VERY early Saturdays and usually mixed in before or after the Journey to the Center of the Earth cartoon (which was also pretty good).

8th man was great, so was Gigantor, Speed Racer and Prince Planet.

I remember back when I was a kid growing up during the 70's. Saturday 🌄🌄Saturday🌄Mornings🌄🌄 were absolutely the best time of the week! I can remember waking up about 6-7am, and off to the kitchen I went. A bowl of Fruity Pebbles, Lucky Charms, Alpha Bits, Frosted Flakes, or if Mom was mad, Cheerios.....lol. Or we'd get those 6-pack, 8-pack, or 12-pack Variety Boxes. Kellogg's and Big G had them. I'd have my blanket on the couch, my cereal set and ready to go, and a few Mego Superheroes action figures. Then for the next 4 to 5 hours it was CARTOONS!! The Superfriends, Scooby-Doo, Hanna Barbera's shows. Land of the Lost, the 🍌🍌Banana🍌Splits🍌🍌, and my all-time favorite cartoon, The Bugs Bunny/Road-Runner Show!! Then at 11am we'd switch over the station to WVTV Channel-18 and they then aired AWA's All-Star Wrestling show. My Mom and I loved watching wrestling. Saturdays were such an amazing time when we were kids. Nowadays Saturday mornings are nothing even close to what we had back then. And that is SAD!! They have no idea what they are missing!

Excellent! I don’t think some of these have zapped a neurone with me since Harold Holt was in The Lodge. One thought: What was with all the eye patches? Moshe Dayan made them fashionable but that wasn’t until 1967.

It was an adventure fiction trope in the 60s. Maybe Moshe Dayan inspired it.

I think my favorite cartoons from the 60s were The Jetsons, Space Ghost, Marvel Superheroes Show, Herculoids, Johnny Cypher and Scooby-Doo Where Are you! (I have almost all of the last one in my collection)

I love Hanna Barbara super heroes that appeared in the late 60s and also Jonny Quest… The Herculoids was a favorite! Also Young Samson…

The production design in Space Angel was fantastic. Nothing else like it at the time.

That was a fun list. I never saw Rocket Robin Hood until I was on a school trip to Canada but it seemed fun. Herculoids to me is right up there with Space Ghost and you can't have Fantastic Voyage without Journey to the Center of the Earth.

I'm a little surprised you didn't include _Space Ghost,_ another Hanna-Barbera cartoon, contemporary with _The Herculoids._ That for me had more imaginative adventures, since they could roam the galaxy instead of being stuck on one planet. And SG had some kick-ass powers. Good overview of these cartoons in any case.

@@terrytalksmovies Well, it was pretty popular in the USA along with the other H-B cartoons. I pretty much grew up on H-B cartoons, not just those on Saturday mornings either.

"Johnny Cypher" and "Rocket Robin Hood" came immediately to mind when I saw the title of the video. "Fantastic Voyage" brings good memories, too. I may have watched "Space Angel", as I remember the weird synchro-vox thing, but I can't say for sure. I wouldn't have thought of "The Herculoids" as Science-Fiction, but technically it is, I guess. I would have put "Journey to the Center of the Earth" on the list, instead.

Thanks Terry, watched the Top five at the same period on Channel 9, Channel 7 and the ABC, so Cartoon Corner with Skeeter the Paper Boy in the after noon and Hey, Hey Saturday original morning show. Channel 10 was pretty much a cultural desert for kids LoL, actually Fantastic Voyage was Channel 10 sorry with Journey to the Centre of the Earth, Loved all your secondary mentions as well!!. Would welcome some follow ups' as you mentioned.

Somehow, I missed out on Johnny Cypher (I suspect the alien may have been voiced by the same person who did Spritle Racer). I remember Rocket Robin Hood but, for some reason, it never got into my regular rotation. Fascinating that Fantastic Voyage only has seventeen total episodes. I certainly remember it well, especially that dramatic opening. I liked Space Angel but it seemed like it took forever to get through an entire adventure. I liked the Herculoids as well but, in retrospect, it was very formulaic, same basic plot with a different evil alien each week.

I had a model of the cartoon version of the Fantastic Voyage vessel. It looked nothing like the movie version, but it was pretty cool.

I'm familiar with almost all of these from my early years, but don't think I've ever heard of Rocket Robin Hood or Captain Fathom. Terry, there's a large number of cartoons by lesser known studios, like Harveytoons (Heckle and Jeckle (sp?) the magpies, Dinky Duck who flew with his feet, Baby Huey, Casper the Friendly Ghost) as well as Terrytoons (Mighty Mouse, the Terry Bears, Farmer Alfalfa). _I may have mixed a few of those up by studio!_ There were also others like Batfink and Roger Ramjet, and the educational show The Funny Company. Almost forgot to mention, I had a plastic model kit of the Voyager from Fantastic Voyage. Unfortunately it and a lot of others didn't survive into my adulthood.

I don't know how I missed this video... I grew up in Canada and Rocket Robin Hood was a staple. I was tickled to see it on this list! Silly as it was, my friends and I loved it. The voice of the narrator, Bernard Cowan, would be instantly familiar to anyone who watched CBC tv in the 60s and 70s.

Voice actors are really underrated. It's like hearing John Vernon in the old Marvel Super Heroes cartoons.

Space Angel - I loved Space Angel! My first retro-future experience. Okay, the Synchro-Vox is a little weird. But the spaceships were Very Cool, and there was a real effort to create a viable SF universe (Each of the nine planets had their own insignia on the tail section of their ships.) No Saturday morning cartoon after it was ever quite as authentic - Thanks!

Synchro-Vox was fun because it was so WTF. It was also scary to some kids.

Fond memories of 'The Herculoids'. That's the only one I got into though I did spend a weekend watching 'Space Angel' on a station that was running back-to-back episodes. It had superior artwork ruined by SynchroVox, IMO. The episodes were pretty good as I recall.

I did have a Prince Planet t-shirt ten years ago. Love that stuff. Phantoma is based on Ogon Batto, and I have the live action movie version of that, starring Sonny Chiba.

The only ones I knew were "Fantastic Voyage" (Busby was my favorite character on that show, btw) and "The Herculoids".

I never saw Rocket Robin Hood, but I have the DVD box set of the 1967 animated Spiderman which after Bakshi took over RRH, he also took over Spiderman, and actually to save money incoroporated elements of RRH with Spiderman.

Rocket Robin Hood especially brought back memories!The same company also produced the Spider-Man cartoon,and for the third season,they were literally taking the more crazy RRH episodes and putting Spidey in them to save a buck!

I've got Fantasic Voyage on DVD lined up on my 'to watch on a rainy day pile'. I think something similar appeared as a cartoon break in The Banana Splits as well as the Arabian Knights. Also have memories of watching 'The Sentinels'. 3 Superheores living on a spaceship in a volcano with a sidekick robot but I don't remember any stories but I always remembered the rotating logo of 'Lou Schemer, Norm Prescot'. As memorable as having Fred Quimby, as producer of the Tom and Jerry cartoons.

In the 70s I watched Casper, Bugs Bunny roadrunner hour and Looney tunes, Underdog, Josie and the pussycats, scooby doo, dastardly and muttely, woody woodpecker, Mr. Magoo, deputy dog, Hercules, rocky and bullwinkle , I didn't see the Science Fiction and superhero cartoons much, except Hercules!

The Mighty Hercules was fun. In a modern context, it appears his sidekick was a twink.

I vaguely recall some of those, but I think I was too busy watching Thunderbirds are Go and Gigantor the Space Age Robot (AKA Tetsujin 28)

I miss Saturday morning cartoons. Now I watch Saturday morning KZread channels! 🙂

Ralph Bakshi also was in charge of the last season of the 60s Spider-Man cartoon. And several episode’s stories got used between it and Rocket Robin Hood; they’d just insert the cels of the different heroes and left everything else pretty much unchanged.

Yep. Low budgets really b0rked a number of animated series in those days.

I don't recall that Dorno was ever specifically described in series as Zandor and Tara's "son", nor that Zandor and Tara were husband and wife. The relationship among them always seemed confusingly nebulous and unspecified to me at the time. I took them to be a "family" of choice and purpose (defending their planet) rather than blood (and surely there was no hanky-panky going on between Zandor and Tara!) 🤣

I have Marine Boy on DVD for the nostalgic fun of it. Eventually our entire childhoods will be able to be purchased. We're staying safe here. Half way through lockdown and plenty of coffee.

Never saw any of these toons. But I used to play outside a lot as a kid.

Great video Terry. The Herculoids is one of my all time favorites. Haven’t seen Rocket Robin Hood since I was a kid. Almost forgot about that one.

Space Angel was fine as long as he didn’t have to parallel park, same as Leela.

They're all still watchable, which is a great achievement.

I grew up in the 60's and remember Marine Boy, as well as some that you didn't mention, such as Gigantor and Astro Boy.

Space Angels first came out in 1960 not 1962. Remember seeing it then as a small boy. Great cartoon though.

With these lists I sometimes have to limit what I can cover. Getting a clip from Marine Boy wasn't possible at that time.
