Why I stopped buying Jordan Retros
The other day I tweeted that I currently buy Ultra Boost Like I used to buy Jordan Retros… find out in this video why…
Intro
Let me start by saying I am still a fan of the JB, and they still have pairs I will want to cop
5- $190 for retros still, no “remastered” Market is not willing to pay $190 for a pair that will go on sale a week later (see Tblakes vid)
JB killed more than the resale market by raising the prices and producing more… next point
4- We don’t need a new pair of Jordans to drop every week. Variety is nice to see, but massive GR every week is not needed.
3- Only so many OG colorways to retro New colorway overload, even for collectors. What started as a handful of CWs, is now dozens and dozens of CWs! Cant ever keep up

2- Comfort is king right now. Which is why i have been buying Ultra Boost, Pure Boost, NMDs, Yeezys, and 93/17 Boost.
1 - No more FOMO. Nostalgia is gone. Personally grown up past the “storytelling” of sneakers to simply sell the product. Feels like JB is trying too hard sometimes to move the products.

    Ok, so half the comments section is mad cuz they think you're throwing shade at JB, speficially the Retro line, and the other half is mad because they think you're just a hypebeast that jumped ship onto another...where to begin......ok, let's start with the first one....if you're a strict Jordan sneaker head, why are you watching this video??? Did you just click it because you had time on your hands and needed to let out frustration??? If you have to collect every one that comes out, no matter the color, or model, or anything, why would you click on this video? You obviously are biased towards one brand and either won't sway from it, or stray too far from it. This is just one man's opinion, no need to berate him on just his opinions, if you knew you wouldn't agree with any of the opinions he actually put out ( which are pretty sound btw). Regarding the second half, this man is a true sneakerhead, if you've watched his channel, much like he's stated, he's fucked with Ultraboost and...

    Adidas, in general, for a while, way before they were what they are now, along with other brands. You can say J's are more comfortable, that's totally your opinion, but his is that they aren't, and that the Ultraboost is, which seems to be a consensus among a lot of people, not just him, or people on YT but also in daily life, from my experience. The older you get, the more you start to realize that comfort is key and maybe having a model that was cool when you were 20 in 50 different colors/release dates isn't as nice as having something that actually feels good. If Rockport made an actually good feeling shoe that was stylish, he'd no doubt have a pair, and if you don't know what Rockports are, then maybe you should check your sneaker/shoe history.

    Awesome video. I feel the same way about Jordan brand. I feel like its not exclusive anymore. And to many retros. Price point is crazy for the sneakers. When I got back into the sneaker game I felt like jordan brand is messing up the sneaker game by doing to much. I feel like they have taken something that I loved and ruined it for me.

    I think you're justified in your feelings about Jordan Brand. But your message is from a person who, like you said, can buy any sneaker releases you want. You have connections to employee stores, you get discounts everywhere you go, and you have retailers like Champs sending you free Jordans. For the average sneaker fan, we don't have any of that. Most of us don't have the ability to buy every single drop we want. Whether it's because of availability, financial restrictions, etc. I get that Jordan Brand is releasing a lot of retros, but most of us don't have them. I get that Adidas seems a little more limited at the moment, but most of us can't get our hands on them or can't pay resale. So would you rather let the bots and hypebeasts flex on everybody, or would you rather make sneakers easier to attain so that customers who want nice shoes can have them?

  • @heskicks

    great comment man! to be fair tho, i have to work for my connections, and i have to work for my $ that I spend on sneakers! i do think its good that pairs drop and dont sell out, I just think they over did it with going from releasing maybe 20 retros in 1 year... to over 120 different pairs in ever larger quantities.

    People just forget the purpose of the sneaker culture and what makes it so special. It's all about rockin what you like regardless of comfort, quality, and hype. If you like it and have the funds to get a shoe then get it! That's why there is an endless variety of footwear in this world. To each his own. If you're with boost, then wear Adidas. If you're with Js then wear Js. It's that simple. Everyone has a different taste, which makes the sneaker culture special. So let the hypebeasts do what they do, and let the real ones keep it a century.

  • @robhova

    @robhova

    7 жыл бұрын

    As you get older comfort plays a factor in what shoes you get. Also not caring about quality are you crazy most of these retros have some of the worst quality leather I have had the displeasure in feeling. Those black motorboat 4's feel like a thin plastic, my $40 work shoes have a better imitation leather and those cost $190. As a fan of 4's, and black and blue as a colorway I was wildly disappointed when I went to footlocker to buy them. You have to be a fool to think price to quality doesn't mean anything.

  • @cheezeitz3697

    @cheezeitz3697

    7 жыл бұрын

    robhova If comfort is key then why aren't people getting Asics? They are forsure more supportive and the cushion is more responsive. And yes you are right about the price to comfort considerations. But like I said, there are many selections out there and that is why the culture is so versatile. Everyone can wear what they want. I love js and boost. But I aint using js for performance or reselling them so I can honestly care less for the quality. I get shoes for the looks regardless of quality. Bc who walks up to me and starts rubbing my toe box to see how soft it is. Sneakers are sneakers and it's a materialistic thing. The only quality I care about is food lol

  • @robhova

    @robhova

    7 жыл бұрын

    Cheeze Itz Its not the fad anymore, I want to say like 4 years ago when there was always some collab going on with Asics everyone was buying into it. Don't get me wrong I would like to own a pair of Asics but I can't fuck with the fitting they are just too narrow for me because the models I like have an attached tongue. In the end it's your money if quality of materials isn't your thing more power to you. I can't justify 190 for a subpar quality sneaker when I paid 60 less and got one with better materials. Just because it has a jumpman logo isn't a reason to inflate the price by 60 and use worse materials and these are a pair of Nike's I'm comparing them to, both under the same umbrella. Not saying I don't buy Jordan's, the last pair of sneakers I brought were Jordan's.

    Hes Kicks -- Your arguments have no merit though so the "hypebeast" connotation serves as a default label. For example, you repeatedly state that the quality of Jordan's materials doesn't justify the $190 price-point, yet you don't elaborate on (or even touch upon) how Adidas Ultra Boosts' materials (taken in their aggregate) are justified at comparable $180 & $200 price-points. And I presume it is because you know that a knitted material on a shoe 's upper does not have the longevity and useful life of a shoe constructed out of leather, leather composite, suede, and Nike's synthetic durabuck. I have several UBs, but I'm not about to argue that my UBs can be worn frequently alongside my AJ1s for years on end, or that they'll still be presentable.

    I think Nike initially flooded the market with Jordans was to kill off the resale game. I feel like they saw what was going on with the bots and everything a while back and said if we can't charge people $500+ for Jordans we will flood the market and make sure these things are near retail. As someone who likes to buy shoes that I like to wear thats fantastic news because that means I can go to the mall or a foot site and get what I want. I think the $190-220 price point is good (or bad if you can't afford that) because it keeps the resellers at arms length knowing they won't get much more than retail out of them. Which is what Adidas is trying to do with the Yeezy line and the Zebras. Even tho I still couldn't cop the Zebras, a lot of people did. Thats my impression of it anyways. I'm only a year and a half into the sneaker game.

    Junior Polanco ok here is the problem yeah you like going and being able to pay 190 220 for a new jordan release but how you gonna like it when the following month you go and see them on sale for 150 in some cases down to 120 you gonna get pissed because your actually losing money gonna so that's the problem whoever buy new jordan releases are actually spending more than they should that is why they don't sell out and eventually go to outlets

True sneakerheads buy what they like point blank period. If JB makes a colorway you dislike you just skip it; but the fact that you want to stop buying them sounds like your just jumping ship. You have some valid points but as a collector I buy what I like not what is most popular or most rare. sounds like all you care about is hyped shoes and that's sad.

    You think $190 is bad? In Canada they're $255 plus $40 tax. (depending on which province you live in) In my province it's $40. So a regular GR Jordan with tax is $295. And the specialty Jordan's with Nike Air on the back are $295 before $40 tax. So like the true blue 3's or Space Jams were $335. That's insane. I work hard so its not like I'm broke or anything but I'm not some rich dude either. And like you were saying they come out every week. So if I wanted to buy every retro each week I would be dropping over a thousand dollars a month on Jordan's. Fuck that. I have two kids and a mortgage. I have more important things to spend money on. I'm over it. There are plenty of pairs I would like to have but I just can't be dropping that much cash on shoes anymore. I'm getting older and its not like it was when I was in my teens and early 20's. I don't need to be strutting around in $300 Jordan's anymore. Time for me to grow up.

And yeah I do got a beat ass pair of cements that I still wear! Just because they mean that much. But don't get me wrong boost ain't no joke but I'm here for the "sneakers" in general not just some shit that Kanye wears or some other shit just because it's the hot thing like supreme and bape. I'm not letting the culture guide me to what "it" wants me to buy or like I'm here for what I like. I am 15 and could never afford Jordans, but always loved them. Now I am okay with spending most of my money on shoes, but still am not going to spend too much on a single pair. When I was 14 I got a pair of AJ 1s from footlocker for $70. I got a pair of "motorsport" 4s a few days ago ($110 from nike outlet). So there is so many shoes I would love to own I just love the look, feel of the leather and everything they are not uncomfortable to me either. So I will continue to buy them slowly when I have the money. I wear jordans to school almost everyday and I am not afraid of creases, I treat them how they should be! All the colorways are more or less the same just because you can't really do a lot with the model and I think Jordan retros look a lot better, have way more variety, and just in general have a way better aesthetic, like nobody cares if you're rocking ultra boost but your gonna break necks with jordans. Also ultra boost is 240-260 canadian dollars which is a fucking stupid price compared to 255 that will go on sale down to 200 after a few weeks. Hes realizes buying and discussing Jordan's with his viewers isn't as popular anymore, meanwhile, buying Adidas products is. So naturally, he's going to go with what generates more views and makes him feel "elitist" when he picks up a coveted Ultraboost or Yeezy that most people failed to get.. It's that yearning for acceptance that steers the proverbial giant ship that he's on. But don't worry, once people realize they wanna wear Jordan's again, he'll be back....he'll ALWAYS be back.....

Im not a consumer that had only like 5 pairs of Js, I had HUNDREDS of pairs, so put yourself in my shoes and watch this vid and you would understand why the market is just saturated with new colorways too often, and the OG colorways arent retroing every 10 yrs anymore, its every 5 yrs. its no worries if I miss out on a pair, it will come back, meanwhile I dont need the ones I already had before.

    Totally agree. The FOMO is def. not there with Jordans. It just isnt as exciting to buy Jays anymore, they arent as limited. You'll see all your boys and everyone around wearing the same shit.

    Some good points. But true hypebeast in the worse form. You complain about frequency and amount of colorways...have you not been paying attention to how many Ultra Boost and NMD releases there are? So more like you hop on the trendy wave, especially since you said you won't buy Jordan's anymore which is the new trendy thing to say. At the end of the day it is the buyers decision, but if you can't see how adidas is doing everything that you hate or dislike about what Jordan brand is doing, your view is jaded.

    I just look at the retros like any other shoe. If there is a particular retro u like, then get it. But getting sneakers just to collect does not make much sense to me unless its really like an ultra rare shoe. But these general release retros if you like the colorway then yeah get it to wear but dont horde them makes no sense to me.

    Is it just me or does it seem selfish to not want other people to be able to get the same shoes that they want but can't due to lack of availability or extreme resale prices. It is because of jordan retros that it is even possible for me to get some pairs that have not been available for years. Why can't some sneaker heads just let other people get their own sneakers instead of trying to make it all so exclusive like some form of sneaker snob. You aren't the last generation of sneaker collector so let younger ones have their time too. God forbid any of your prized sneakers start to crack and you want to get a replacement.

    I have Jordan stuff from the 2000s that has superior quality to stuff being released today. It’s not just Jordan, it’s all brands. And it ain’t an old guy thing either. All this stuff used to be way higher quality probably because they didn’t release stuff every 30 seconds.

    kimasilv Fam, I stopped buying Jordans 7 years ago and started rocking New Balance exclusively. I have a crazy collection at this point. A big plus about rocking NB is I never have to worry about walking down the street and seeing 30 people rocking the same sneakers I have on. Also, I just felt like I out grew Jordans and felt like Jordans are for teenagers. Last but not least is the price of NB. You can get NB for $55-$75 beans and they're really well made sneakers. Jordan retro sneakers feel cheap (but are expensive asf) by comparison. So, yeah, make that switch. Just do it, lol
