    Hello, thank you for the great video! For the mechanics question why do you not resolve diagonally and only vertically or horizontally, ie Ncos(theta) + Y = 20g rather than N + Ycos(theta) = 20gcos(theta) + Xsin(theta) where you split the friction force as in other inclined planes questions?

  • @BicenMaths

    @BicenMaths

    2 жыл бұрын

    So you could do it that way if you wanted to, but you’d find your calculations becoming very complicated as there are many more resolved forces. In general in these types of equations, up and down tends to give the simplest calculations! Hope that makes sense

    The mechanics question was not too bad in my opinion. I think the main reason why mechanics can be so difficult is because it’s a bit more ‘practical’ compared to pure maths. The math is easy (apart from the math in FM2 lol) but it requires a lot of visualisation of the question i.e where all the forces are acting, how far is the particle going to travel up the slope etc.

    I’m sure question number 3 doesn’t make any sense. Summing from x=4 to x=9 suggest there are only 6 terms in the sum meaning that the sum should be 0 as it’s a finite sum and each term goes to zero. Obviously this is meant to be Riemann sum which converges to the integral but the formulation of the question is shocking

    23:35 Why would the normal reaction force be acting in a different direction if there was friction? I was under the impression it was always perpendicular to the point of contact.

  • @BicenMaths

    @BicenMaths

    3 жыл бұрын

    Good question! You are correct that the NORMAL reaction is always perpendicular to the surface - this is the surface “pushing back”. But the reaction force here is the combination of this normal force, and a frictional force which will be perpendicular. “Angled” reaction forces only come up in moments in mechanics as previously our forces have been points, not lines, or rods. Rather than thinking of the reaction in the question, instead consider the reaction of the end of the rod on the floor. It experiences two things - 1) the floor pushing up 2) the friction pulling along parallel to the floor. It is the combination of these (through Pythagoras and trig) that means the reaction will be at an angle. This is partly why I think this question appears in the Top 5. Many people think reactions can only be normal - but sometimes they will be angled. Hope that helps, let me know if not and I can try and explain more 👍🏼

    Hi, I am having a bit of trouble with the integration as limit of a sum question. The way I am imagining is there is every y value from 4 to 5 multiplied by a very small width delta x creating rectangles, but I thought sigma goes up in 1s each time so there will only be a tiny rectangle at 4.0,5.0,6.0,7.0.8.0,9.0 and no decimal value between which will be a small part of the area, so how does that notation show that there are infinite strips. Thanks!

  • @BicenMaths

    So you’re right that sigma goes up in 1s, but this is a discrete measure. As we move from discrete sigma to continuous sigma, all the values in between are included. @@BicenMaths The notation is simply wrong though. The index of the sum is always "discrete" - maybe better though of as indexed by some subset of the natural numbers. Otherwise what does it even mean to sum over an uncountable set? Summing over infinities larger than Aleph null can be defined but certainly not for A - level! This question (qu 5) is very badly poised at best. The integral symbol should be equal to the infimum of upper Riemann sums and the supremum of lower Riemann sums where one considers all partitions of the interval into n subintervals... I don't understand what you mean by discrete measure? Are you referring to measure theory?!

    hi sir, for (12:19) question 10. i. Can't we say z is any number and then say (n^2+2)/4 =z, now we make n the subject, n=√(4z-2), this is equivalent to n=√(2) * √(2z-1) when factorised. And since √2 is an irrational number we can say multiplication of an irrational number to another number would give a real number in fractional form thus it cannot be a natural number.

    But if 2z-1 was equal to 2, then you would have that n = root2 x root2 and so is 2, which is a natural number! So this proof doesn't quite work.

    If you draw a line vertically down from C, you have a large triangle. The angle at the top is 90-theta. Using more angle properties, and this angle, you soon work out that angle is also theta! It’s because of breaking things down into vertical and horizontal components. Try drawing it out and filling in missing angles - it should make more sense!

    A reaction force at a peg will be perpendicular to the rod/beam. This is because the circular peg, when pushing “normally”, is perpendicular to its tangent, which is the same as the direction of the beam.

  • @BicenMaths

    @BicenMaths

    3 жыл бұрын

    I would say Year 2 Integration - not because it is hard as an actual topic, but because it relies on SO many other chapters. If you don’t understand all of the maths up until that point (especially trigonometry and differentiation) then integration becomes really tough. So it’s nothing to be scared of - just something to prepare for! I also think trigonometry is generally agreed to be a tough topic. Have you seen on my channel that I have videos for nearly every chapter, exercise by exercise? It contains all the lessons I teach my students, recorded live. And if you go to my About Me section, there’s a Google Drive link that has pdfs of the lesson notes that you can print off and fill in alongside me in the videos! Good luck!
