I've learned from the Impatient Gardener that winter time is probably the best time to clean and sharpen your gardening tools. You're not using it and then it's ready to go when spring comes it.

One way to keep shovels and really many tools in better shape is to have a bucket of sand with oil in it. Mineral or linseed works pretty good. The sand helps to get them clean and the oil protects them. Not that you should put them in it when really dirty. You also mentioned pruners. I really like ratcheting ones, makes it so much easier to cut with and easier on your hands as well.

Using the spade to edge the garden the way you showed is great. I've had a lot of trouble keeping grass from intruding into my gardens. Now I know how to edge them. Your technique reminds me of using a chisel on wood. Keep up the good work, I love your channel.

I would only add this: for the Felco hand pruners…get the ones with the rotating handle if you expect you’re going to be doing a lot of pruning. Young hands may not mind the fixed handle but as you get older, the rotating handle really helps your hands. And always wear gloves!

That mulching fork looks like a really useful thing to have to hand. I'm in the process of clearing a very messy and overgrown allotment and could really have done with something like that to pick up and clear the mountain of weeds and roots my husband and I have pulled off our plot. I'll keep my eye open for one, we've been using leaf grabbers and regular garden forks for mulching and clearing so far.

Some great suggestions here, thank you SRO! A few others that I'll add (and I garden for a living). Trenching shovels with long handles. If you are tall...so much better and quicker to dig planting holes without having to bend over as much! Root Slayer shovels, it's a brand. Steel or fiberglass handles, sharp, nasty blades, heavy for chopping roots, and super strong. Great for digging in rooty and rocky areas where you must cut roots and lever out rocks. Silky Saws. They make excellent folding pruning saws. I agree with Felcos being great pruners, but also take a look at Okatsune brand pruners. They have a different closing/locking mechanism than Felcos that can be easier for some to use and are often a little less expensive. And....cut to the branch collar, not as close to the trunk as possible. 👍👍👍

New to the channel. Just finished watching your Shiitake on Logs episode. It randomly came up on my feed while I was occupied with making brunch. Was awesome video. I'm so allergic to Goldenrod. Very informative and entertaining. ✌️

Put your tools, machine parts, nails etc. on a canvas etc. when you are doing any work, as if it was your religion, like with other important things to remember. It's especially helpful when the ol' sun goes down. Yes, organization is the key to not going nuts. Maybe put a safe sheath on the sharp shovel too. There are so many great comments here. It makes one want to move to the country and start working. Tools are a luxury. Lock them up and put a big protective dog or two out front, or find a better way. Drone defence system?

Even Leaving that clay - dirt on a tool will rust it. It just takes a moment to clean them up. Felco tools are the best.

All very useful and similar to what we're using on our small homestead....I have a twist tiller, garden weasel? I use it to get in and really turn the soil while removing any dead roots and it's my go to bc it's easy on the body and good for the arms! Fiskars sheers too...Side note...since working on our land, how about a video on ways to avoid poison ivy and how best to handle it...since having it twice in the last two months and winter none-the-less! My chickens will free range and wondering if they can pass on to us...Thanks for sharing! Love this channel. 🐓🌱❤

No offense to your RTV but my Subcompact could do it all faster even though it only tops out at 8MPH. With it being my wheelbarrow I have my space designed to fit the machine. & once you learn how to use a drawbar you can haul all sorts of logs or bunches of large branches. Though my subcompact isn't large enough to three-point-fork pallets. I don't even use shovels anymore & just make most of my projects 48 inches wide.

Three decades ago I learned from Barbara Damrosch and Elliot Coleman to buy quality tools, it was one of the very best pieces of advice I ever got in regards to gardening! They advised getting tools such as rakes and shovels with fiberglass or metal parts, no wood. I still have and use the garden fork and spade I bought 30 years ago because of this great advice, I wish I had gotten my Felco pruners then, I have so many junky ones because I didn’t splurge on a quality product from the beginning
